COACHING RECORD

Kevin Willard, now entering his sixth season as the Seton Hall men’s basketball head coach in 2015-16, has reenergized the program both on the court and in the classroom and has the Pirates ready to break through in the BIG EAST. With 50 percent of the team’s scoring and 60 percent of the team’s rebounding returning, boasting two All-BIG EAST performers, bringing in a talented freshman recruiting class and a pair of impact transfers, The Hall is poised for upward movement in the conference in 2015-16 with the goal of reaching the NCAA Tournament.

Willard has developed student-athletes who have earned nine All-BIG EAST selections and 20 BIG EAST Academic All-Star selections, and he has boasted three perfect single-year academic progress rate in the four NCAA reports since becoming the Pirates’ head coach. He has proven to be a strong evaluator and recruiter of talent, as he brought in a consensus top 15 national recruiting class in 2014, led by Isaiah Whitehead, the program’s first McDonald’s All-American since 2001 and just the fifth all-time. He also has been able to retain Metropolitan New York’s top talent with seven of the team’s 13 players hailing from either New York City or New Jersey.

In 2014-15, Willard guided one of the youngest teams in NCAA Div. I to a winning season full of accomplishments. Under Willard’s direction, the Pirates captured the 2014 Paradise Jam championship, claimed the first-ever Garden State Hardwood Classic trophy with a win over Rutgers and defeated two Associated Press top-15 teams (No. 15 St. John’s, No. 6 Villanova) in back-to-back games for the first time in over 20 years. Seton Hall returned to the national rankings for the first time in three years, earning a No. 19 ranking in the Associated Press poll on Jan. 5 and remaining ranked for a total of three weeks. The No. 19 ranking was the highest for Seton Hall since being No. 22 on Jan. 30, 2001 and the first time inside the top 20 since Jan. 23, 2001.

And although the team was young, Willard and his staff did an outstanding job developing the freshmen student-athletes into fantastic BIG EAST contributors, headlined by forward Angel Delgado, who was named the BIG EAST Rookie of the Year after becoming just the second freshman in BIG EAST history to lead the conference in rebounding (Troy Murphy in 1999). Joining Delgado on the BIG EAST All-Rookie team was White-head, who had a big impact on the team, finishing second in scoring at 12.0 points per game. He earned Joe Calabrese MVP honors after scoring 25 points in Seton Hall’s win over Rutgers in the inaugural Garden State Hardwood Classic. Khadeen Carrington, Desi Rodriguez and Rashed Anthony also were freshmen playing critical roles for the Pirates, who received nearly half of their season points from rookies.

Willard and his staff also aided in the development of Sterling Gibbs, who blossomed into a BIG EAST star after finishing in the top five in the conference in scoring and assists, the only player in the league to do so. Gibbs was a second-team All-BIG EAST selection, dropped 20 or more points nine times during the season and had a 40-point outburst against Illinois State in the Paradise Jam championship title game to earn MVP honors. Gibbs finished ninth in the nation in three-point shooting at 43.6 percent, which is also second-highest of any Seton Hall Pirate ever.

Off the court, Willard is a big believer in academic success, and his vision has translated into incredible results. The Pirates posted a GPA over 3.0 during the spring 2015 semester. At the same time, the program was honored with the distinguished NCAA APR Public Recognition Award for sporting an Academic Progress Rate in the top 10 percent of all Div. I men’s basketball schools. Five Pirates were bestowed the BIG EAST Academic All-Star award for holding a 3.0 GPA or higher during the entire 2014-15 academic year, including Angel Delgado, Sterling Gibbs, Haralds Karlis, Brandon Mobley and Michael Nzei.

The Seton Hall men’s basketball team participates in several community service initiatives annually, honoring the University’s longstanding devotion to service that remains at the core of its mission. The Pirates have most recently lent a helping hand to several charitable organizations and endeavors, such as “Reading with the Pirates” Program, America’s Grow A Row, the Saint John’s Soup Kitchen in Newark, the South Mountain YMCA, Team Walker Program for Jersey City Youth, while also making visits to the pediatric unit of Saint Barnabas Medical Center.

The H.A.L.L. (Helping Athletes Learn to be Leaders) Program works in conjunction with the NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills program by focusing on building leaders within the Seton Hall community while enhancing the quality of the student-athlete experience as a whole.

The H.A.L.L. Program consists of five different components, each beneficial in their own way in aiding in the development of a fu-ture leader. The five components are Leadership Development, Student-Athlete Welfare Enhancement, Academic and Athlet-ic Success Initiatives, Community Enrichment, and Spiritual Growth. Each of these components provides student-athletes with the skills and resources necessary to face and overcome potential challenges, on and off the playing surface, and to be as successful as they possibly can be inside the classrooms and in their future.

Whether the Seton Hall basketball team is home or on the road, fans of the Pirates will be able to follow every play on the radio. Each of Seton Hall’s regular season games will be heard primarily on the Pirates’ flagship station AM 970 THE ANSWER (WNYM) out of Hackensack, N.J. Select games during the season will air on WMCA 570AM.

Pirate fans outside of the radio market can tune in to hear Seton Hall basketball live on the Pirate Sports Network via SHUPirates.com, the official website of Seton Hall University Athletics.

Seton Hall’s radio broadcast team of veteran announcers Gary Cohen and Dave Popkin is back for its 13th season in 2015-16.

Cohen, well-known in the New York area as the play-by-play voice of the New York Mets, is one of the most respected and accomplished play-by-play announcers in the nation. Cohen is currently the head announcer on SportsNet New York and has broadcast Mets games for over 20 years along with being the radio voice of St. John’s basketball from 1995-2002. He has also called national baseball broadcasts for CBS and ESPN Radio and has handled play-by-play duties for CBS Radio and Westwood One for the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament.

Behind the scenes ensuring that each Seton Hall broadcast airs without a hitch is veteran engineer Mike Infantino. In his 27th season of Pirates basketball, Infantino has worked with a wide range of collegiate and professional teams in his career.

Mike Infantino (Engineer)

Veteran sportscaster Dave Popkin will handle color commentary and back-up play-by-play on the Seton Hall Radio Network. The versatile Popkin also handles play-by-play for college football and basketball telecasts on ESPNU and ESPN3 and he has served as the voice of Northeast Conference Basketball on MSG Network for the last 16 years. The Nutley, NJ resident has called 14 seasons of minor league baseball, including for the Triple A Iowa Cubs and Double A El Paso Diablos. He is the former voice of Monmouth University and Long Island University sports and previously handled play-by-play for Atlantic 10 Basketball. Dave has called five different sports for CN8 – The Comcast Network over its 13-year history.

The date is April 24, 1931. Comfortably ahead by four runs in the ninth inning, fans of the defending Eastern Intercollegiate Champion Holy Cross Crusaders are filing towards the exits, assured that their home team had placed another notch in the win column.

In quintessential Seton Hall style, the SHU nine gives clear notice that they did not share the same sentiment. The visiting team shot ahead behind a series of walks, hits and errors that caused many of the departing Crusader supporters to promptly pull an about face. Five runs later, Seton Hall had taken an 11-10 advantage that would eventually stand as the game’s final score. That day, SHU became the first team in four years to defeat regional power Holy Cross twice in the same season and that day, Pirates became synonymous with the blue & white.

The commotion that was the last-ditch comeback prompted a local sportswriter in attendance to exclaim, “This Seton Hall team is a gang of Pirates!” Upon hearing of the proclamation after the game, the SHU team decided that their newfound name was fitting, and that they would return to South Orange and be known as the Pirates thereafter.

In many ways, the origin of the Pirate nickname is representative of the Seton Hall spirit. On that New England afternoon, the original gang of Pirates did not shy away in the face of adversity. Instead, they continued forward, rising to the occasion and emerging victorious.

ALMA MATER

FIGHT SONG

Originally written by Charles A. Byrne in 1936, the Seton Hall University Alma Mater was officially adopted by the University in 1937 when the dean read it before the student body. The original music was composed by Nicola A. Montani and was revised by Walter Cohrssen in 1978. A new choral and brass arrangement was added by John Nowik in 2000.

The alma mater is frequently sung at Seton Hall men’s and women’s basketball games and it is tradition for the song to be performed after each game.

It has become a recent tradition for the SHU men’s basketball team to line up on the court after each home game, regardless of the outcome, and sing the alma mater with the Pirate faithful.

Although there is no known date for the publishing of the most modern version of the Seton Hall University fight song, the cheer represents a culmination of a number of SHU chants and cheers dating all the way back to the 1920’s.

The earliest version of the modern fight song dates back to that era of the 1920 just as athletics were becoming an important tradition in South Orange. One chant closely resembles today’s battle cry:

Seton Hall Alma Mater (Lyrics by Charles A. Byrne ’37)To Alma Mater all be loyal, keep her name in purest light.

Never waver from her precepts, guard her banner blue and white.O sing her praise to highest skies and be ye faithful in her eyes,

for she will foster all your dreams, her name is Seton Hall.

When on life’s hard stones you stumble, pray to God to be your guide.Think of Seton Hall your mother, then forge on in steady stride.

O sing her praise to highest skies, and be ye faithful in her eyes, for she will foster all your dreams,

her name is Seton Hall.

For the Blue / For the White / For the Blue and White / We will fight,

fight, fight / Fight team (pause), Fight Fight

“Onward Setonia”

Onward Setonia / We are bound for victoryHazard Zet Forward / We will honor that decree

Onward Setonia / Stand up proud and stand up tallFight! Fight! Fight!

For the blue and whiteAnd the glory of Seton Hall!

S! H! U!

Dear Seton Hall University Fan,

At Seton Hall, we are very excited about the path our athletic programs are following. In order to ensure success on and off the court, we want to educate our fans on the importance of knowing and following the rules.

As a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the BIG EAST Conference, Seton Hall University is responsible for ensuring that the faculty, staff, administrators, student-athletes, alumni and athletics representatives of the University abide by NCAA regulations and guidelines. The NCAA defines an “athletics representative” as anyone who is involved with the promotion of Seton Hall athletics, has made financial donations to the Pirate Blue Athletic Fund, is a season ticket holder, or has arranged or provided employment to enrolled student-athletes.

NCAA legislation sets strict rules and regulations that all members of the Seton Hall family must follow. There are guidelines that prohibit the recruitment of a student-athlete by anyone other than a certified coach. If you know of a potential student-athlete who would be a good fit for the Seton Hall athletics program, please pass that information on to a member of our coaching staff. Please do not initiate any form of contact (including letters, telephone calls or email) to any prospective student-athlete or their parent or guardian for the purposes of recruiting.

In many instances, you hear of athletics representatives who are well-meaning but cross the line and thus cause their athletics programs disgrace and sanctions. We ask that if you have any questions, please contact our Office of Athletic Compliance at (973) 761-9494 or visit our website at www.shupirates.com for our Guidebook to NCAA Rules that provides detailed information concerning NCAA rules and regulations.

Thank you for your continued support of Seton Hall Athletics. Go Pirates!
