APS Survey 8 Results – Key Headlines

‘Participation increases for Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin’

Active People Survey 8 results have just been released, showing data collected between October 2013 – 2014. Swimming is the nation’s most popular sport but has suffered the biggest loss with nearly 250,000 less participants. The biggest gains were made by athletics, with nearly 150,000 new participants plus gym and keep fit classes both gained over 100,000. Team sports have increased in popularity with increases for football, cricket, netball and rugby union. The latest figures demonstrate the inequality gap between male and female participation, reinforcing the need for the recently launched This Girl Can campaign. Energize are helping promote the campaign in STW; supporting partners and front line deliverers to access the resources and will be promoting inspirational case studies. There has been a decrease in the number of people with disabilities playing sport nationally, we wait for further data releases from APS8 to see whether this is the case locally. Jess Lightwood, Shropshire’s Inclusion Officer is working across STW to grow opportunities and support disabled people to take part in sport and physical activity. Jess came into post in November 2014 and has already started some great work in this area. Participation locally for 14+ years has increased, perhaps reflecting current programmes delivered by Energize (together with local authority partners) on behalf of Sport England, namely Sportivate and Satellite Clubs which focus on opportunities for young people.

The County area of Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin has seen a statiscally significant increase in participation for the 1x30 minutes/week measure, from 36.4% to 37.2% (a 0.8% increase). Using data from Sport England’s Local Sport Profile Tool, the number of people in STW now taking part 1x30minutes/week has increased by 2,298. Sport England’s Economic Value of Sport Tool values the potential health benefits of these new participants at £3 million.*

A full breakdown of APS8 nationally, regionally and locally for Telford & Wrekin and Shropshire Local Authority areas is available our website, please click here

The interactive tool is due to be updated by the end of this month. If you have any queries, please email [email protected]

This data was taken from the latest APS8 raw data.

*This amount indicates the value of inactive people becoming active 1x30 minutes/week and does not take into account those that previously fulfilled the NI8 or 3x30minutes/week measures and now participate less.

APS results reinforce need to deliver more attractive and accessible opportunities for

disabled people

The English Federation of Disability Sport (EFDS) was disappointed to learn today that Sport England’s latest Active People Survey shows a decline in the last year for the number of disabled people who regularly take part in sport. The national charity believes that the results reinforce the importance of understanding and responding to disabled people’s needs and preferences much more effectively. Those who provide opportunities need to be much more proactive in implementing new approaches that will better engage disabled people if they are to ensure that everyone can be active for life. Figures released for Active People Survey 8 show there are 121,700 fewer disabled people participating in the period October 2013 and October 2014 since the last recording. This widens the gap between non-disabled and disabled people’s participation, which shows less than half the number of disabled people take part in sport or physical activity for 30 minutes once a week compared to non-disabled people. EFDS continues to lead the way in the research, engagement and marketing work. In EFDS’s 2013 Lifestyle Report, it showed that seven in ten disabled people want to be more active. Insight highlights, through EFDS’s Motivate Me and Talk to Me reports, that whilst many opportunities exist, the low participation level suggests that either disabled people are unaware of opportunities available to them or what they are offered is not appealing enough. For more information on Sport England’s Active People Survey, visit the website www.sportengland.org Visit www.efds.co.uk to learn more about EFDS’s work.

Community Sport Activation Fund

Round 4 fund is open for applications until 20th April 2015. Grants of between £50,000 and £250,000 are available to support revenue projects which increase or sustain participation. The kind of projects they will fund: • Activities reflecting a broad range of sports • Informal opportunities which could lead to regular participation • Family orientated activities with a focus on the 14 plus age group • Local activator roles that focus on directly organising and delivering new opportunities for participation. The best projects will demonstrate a focus on a clearly defined geographical area, demonstrate an understanding of sporting needs, evidence of what potential participants want or need, local partners working together and a clear and robust delivery plan. In Round 3, Sport England relaxed the requirement for partnership funding of projects which benefit the most deprived communities, this has been extended for Round 4. If the substantial majority (80% or more) of the targeted participants for the project live in local authority ward areas with an IMD score of 25 or higher then you may apply without partnership funding. This applies to the following areas in Shropshire; Harlescot, Castlefields and Ditherington, and Monkmoor. In Telford & Wrekin, the areas are applicable: Malinslee, Woodside, Cuckoo Oak, Donnington, Brookside, Haygate, Arleston, College, Hadley and Leegomery, Dawley Magna, Ketley and Oakengates, the Nedge and Madeley. https://www.sportengland.org/funding/our-different-funds/community-sport-activation-fund/ If you’re working towards submitting an application, Energize would love to hear from you, please contact: [email protected]

Attingham Park Night Run, 14th March 2015

Night Run is a national series of night time trail hosted at 12 National Trust properties, including Attingham Park, Shrewsbury.

If you've ever wanted to run around the gardens of a Tudor Manor House at night, or explore ancient woodlands after dark, then Night Run gives you the chance.

A unique experience

The National Trust have got lots of activities at their venues, but this is a chance to see some of those places when they're usually closed. Whether you're a walker, a first time runner or an experienced off-roader, these events will have something for you.

The events will be fun, social and all about exploring the outdoors. They will appeal to everyone from families looking for adventure to seasoned runners wanting to experience something different.

You'll be able to choose from our Explorer route (1-2km) or our Adventurer route (6-9km), and if you'd rather walk than run you're more than welcome. All the routes are totally traffic free and are mostly on paths and trails rather than tarmac.
