Energy use in healthcare has increased 36 per cent since 1995, in part due to changes in technology and data centre requirements36

www.SEreply.com • Intelligent Energy 5

Hospitals face increasing budgetary pressures from many areas. Continually increasing energy costs only compound the pressure and can strangle a hospital’s budget.

Energy efficiency = found moneyTraditional cost-cutting measures such as staff cutbacks only go so far. But energy efficiency can resuscitate the bottom line and free up capital to purchase new equipment, build new clinics, and expand care. Consider that a 30 per cent savings in energy costs has the potential to improve profitability up to one per cent. That can translate to a savings of nearly ¤908,115.38 in 28 patient days for a typical 235-bed hospital with a 59.8 per cent occupancy. That’s a significant impact on financial performance!

Finding the savingsNo matter the size of your investment, there are solutions to be found. Consider an entry-level project such as building optimisation, utility rate reviews, or variable speed drives for energy savings up to 10 per cent. The next level might be projects like advanced building recommissioning, HVAC optimisation and lighting retrofits for energy savings up to 20 per cent.

Energy savings up to 30 per cent require a wide-ranging approach and comprehensive energy projects. These include building upgrades, HVAC improvements, lighting retrofit, building envelope improvements, and application of innovative energy- saving measures.

Most important, with these measures hospitals can reduce costs significantly without adversely impacting patient safety or quality of care.

Two key considerationsFor maximum results, look for an integrated system approach that spans numerous domains when evaluating efficiency solutions. And when choosing an energy management service provider, ensure it has experience working within the nuances of the healthcare industry.

There are many more specific energy efficiency solutions and factors to consider, all outlined in “How Energy Efficiency Ensures Financial Health for Hospitals,” from the global energy experts at Schneider Electric™. Available for download at www.schneider-electric.com/whitepapers. You’ll soon be on your way to significant and long-term savings.

Glance at your computer’s home page and you’re likely to see topical information you want. What if that quick glance also gave you critical information you need, like your facility’s current energy usage, and showed you where you could be saving money on energy across your entire business? Today it’s possible, thanks to Schneider Electric™ Remote Energy Management.

Information the way you want itRemote Energy Management (REM), a cost-effective, web-based solution, helps customers profile their energy usage and carbon footprint across multiple sites as well as generate alarms, savings recommendations, and baseline comparisons. With REM, customers can generate reports on everything from energy load profiles to sustainability achievements, then customise and convert these reports into widgets for their home pages. There is no need for a separate log-in, and information can be accessed through any Internet-capable device. Because it is subscription-based, REM eliminates the need for expensive software or in-house IT expertise as well.

Making the complex simple“Our ambition is to turn energy digital, and to do it everywhere possible,” explains Philipe Delorme, executive vice president of strategy and innovation for Schneider Electric. Remote energy monitoring applications, notes Delorme, play a critical role by allowing customers to access an energy dashboard easily.

Reports and analytics may be customised by job function. A facilities manager could review information on a shift-by-shift basis while a senior executive might create summary reports measuring performance against budget or preset targets. Agnostic in nature, Remote Energy Management is able to aggregate, cleanse, store, and analyse data from disparate sources, including multiple building management systems. REM works across walls, platforms and business units.

Scrutinise any data centre, and chances are you’ll discover energy waste across your IT systems and infrastructure. Since IT-related energy use has skyrocketed, legacy data centres are financially and environmentally tasked with finding out where to cut those unnecessary energy costs.

But first you must determine your data centre’s carbon footprint to see where IT is consuming energy. The APC by Schneider Electric™ white paper “Allocating Data Centre Energy Costs and Carbon to IT Users” reveals an easy way to take this essential step.

Electric vehicles (EVs) are more economical and environmentally friendly than traditional cars, making them an ideal real-world response to the challenge of reducing the environmental impacts of transportation.

With zero gas and particle emissions and extremely quiet operation, EVs offer a promising alternative for tomorrow’s transportation sector— which, in some countries, currently accounts for 28 per cent of energy consumption and 34 per cent of CO2 emissions.

However, a number of key success factors will condition the future of the EV and the recharging infrastructure is at the top of the list. Users must have optimal access to energy anytime and anywhere.

Looking at energy costs differentlyTurning liability into asset

Electrical costs are projected to grow exponentially over the next five years. And a Duke University survey reveals high energy costs are businesses’ number one concern. Yet most haven’t started a serious energy efficiency programme, partly due to scarce resources.

A different perspectiveRather than thinking of facility improvements to achieve energy savings as costs, consider them assets that can be invested in with a predictable return. The benefits are not only financial (with a modified internal rate of return as high as 29 per cent) but include increased employee productivity, a sharper competitive edge and improved environmental stewardship.

With advances in energy efficiency over the last decade, there is dramatic room for savings in almost every area of your facility. The place to start is with an ongoing strategic energy management programme.

Measurable programme, predictable ROISchneider Electric™ can help you plan for and reduce energy costs. Our energy experts use a proven, measurable process to help companies achieve optimum energy use, from initial energy assessment through

implementation and ongoing review for sustained performance. They identify specific issues, estimate the investments required, and project the ROI that can be expected.

The greatest cost savings are achieved when a range of technologies and applications are used. Our holistic approach looks at building controls, mechanical and electrical systems, building envelope, and water systems.

However, without proactive maintenance, savings from past upgrades can evaporate quickly. One study shows that proactive maintenance programmes can save from 12 to 18 per cent over reactive approaches. Our approach includes these ongoing energy efficiency measures to help you sustain desired ROI.

In the long term, successful companies take control of their energy investments with a proactive programme of immediate savings and sustained energy efficiency. Savings can easily reach double digits.

World energy consumption has risen 45 per cent since 1980 and it’s clear that rising demand for energy is here to stay. Experts say energy consumption will double in the next 40 years — at a minimum. In addition, fossil fuels cause pollution and lead to climate change: already, the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has risen more than 33 per cent since the industrial revolution. Consider emerging markets, new technologies and limited supply, and you have increasing pressures on the cost and security of the current energy system, as well as on the planet.

New energy sources and infrastructure will not be ready in time. Nor will the world economy survive by reducing energy use enough to offset all these factors. The answer must be to maximise our effective use of resources. So it’s no surprise that the most popular course at

MyEnergyUniversity.com is the Fundamentals of Energy Efficiency. Efficiency as a business strategy has many advantages, including immediate, quantifiable results and reduced greenhouse gases for a healthier planet.

To some, doing more with less sounds like a hardship, but remember, energy efficiency is not the same as energy conservation. Conservation can take place purely by reducing consumption — e.g. switching off a light bulb to save energy. That would be inconvenient if the lighting was required for work or study. Efficiency provides the required lighting using less energy — e.g. by replacing the light bulb with a more efficient one and by ensuring the light is turned off whenever it’s not needed. You still save energy, but the room is illuminated and production can continue.

Energy efficiency projects are among the best investments a business can make

Feature

www.SEreply.com • Intelligent Energy 13

Energy efficiency projects are among the best investments a business can make, with significantly better payback and lower risk than many stock market investments.

Where to save?Industry is responsible for 33 per cent of all energy use, and when you add in residential and commercial buildings, that number rises to 72 per cent. Efficiency here will not only offer more result for your investment, it will also enable efficiency in transportation.

Building owners know energy costs are no longer just an overhead. They are now a growing liability that puts the future of business at risk. So where should you seek to make the savings? There are nine major systems that consume energy in buildings and industry where efficiency can play a role. For starters:

In industry, over 60 per cent of electricity >is consumed by motors. 25 per cent savings in this area would save 7 per cent of the world’s electricity! In data centres, computer servers >consume large amounts of power and also create a tremendous need for cooling the equipment. In buildings, lighting, heating, ventilation >and air conditioning are by far the largest energy expense.

How to saveThe good news is there are solutions readily available: low consumption devices, energy management software, and systems for remote monitoring, HVAC and building management, can all help minimise energy use.

But before you rush to any one solution, understand that taking a systematic approach can maximise savings and avoid unnecessary cost without compromising facility reliability, comfort or safety. A truly effective energy efficiency program should have four steps:

Conduct an energy audit to identify areas 1. of maximum benefitFix all the basics that make sense2. Look at automation and regulation to 3. lock in your savingsMonitor and maintain your plan for long-4. term effectiveness

The Schneider Electric™ Fundamentals of Energy Efficiency course tackles all these complex issues and offers key strategies and actions. You’ll understand the difference between passive and active energy efficiency, discover the costs of delaying or doing nothing, learn the steps for success and effective leadership, and perhaps most important, find out how to frame your chosen projects to achieve financial approval for energy efficiency investments.

Taking a systematic approach can maximise savings and avoid unnecessary cost

When you put off energy projects, you are paying for energy that was inefficiently used. Energy costs will continue to increase, and projects will become more expensive due to rising prices. Uniquely redefining data centresThe industry has spoken. No longer can companies and their data centre managers view the facilities space and the traditional IT as discrete environments. Without question, the systems and subsystems of both environments can affect a data centre’s performance, availability, and energy efficiency.

As Gartner® industry analyst David J. Cappuccio points out, “The data centre infrastructure is not just traditional IT equipment and networks; it also includes power systems, air conditioning, uninterrupted power supplies and generators, and the associated switching equipment. These components

are part of an ecosystem, and any change to one component can have detrimental or unintended impacts on other components.”*

For example, since power subsystems span the entire building infrastructure, intermittent or unreliable utility power quality at the service entrance ultimately can threaten server uptime at the rack level. Low fuel in a building generator, similarly, could have a huge impact on backup power runtime should a data centre lose utility power. On the cooling side, overcooling at the facilities level can tax the building’s overall power load, resulting in compromised availability, unnecessary costs, and wasted energy.

Infrastructure that bridges facilities and IT Today, there is a data centre infrastructure solution that is designed as an integrated architecture that meets the needs of a bridged facilities/IT system. Schneider Electric™ calls this connected supporting layer the data centre physical infrastructure, or DCPI. It is critical to ensuring both 24/7/365 uptime and optimised energy efficiency gains. Recognising this essential layer to healthy data centre operations, Schneider Electric alone is pioneering the planning, design, and speedy deployment of this interconnected infrastructure, which integrates power, cooling, physical security, rack systems, and end-to-end monitoring and management.

Only Schneider Electric has the research, relationships, thought leadership, tools, and components to connect facilities, IT systems, and subsystems in a truly integrated way that continuously maximises both availability and energy efficiency. Specifically, with the industry-leading power solutions, innovative security solutions at the building and rack levels, a comprehensive mission-critical “white space” portfolio that includes best-of-breed critical power and cooling advancements, and intelligent energy management tools and capabilities, Schneider Electric delivers high-performance and efficient data centre infrastructure from rack to row to room to building.

What’s more, the Schneider Electric InfraStruxure™ Management Portfolio Software gives data centre managers the visibility they need across this entire system to ensure availability at all times. This software enables operators to make informed, business-driven decisions (e.g., planning and energy management ones) about their data centre infrastructure in real time.

Dynamic infrastructure for ever-changing business needsWith this unprecedented approach, Schneider Electric goes well beyond maximising uptime and optimising both operational and energy efficiencies. Schneider Electric data centres actually are agile enough to allow companies to adapt their infrastructure at the speed of business to meet their ever-changing business needs. The scalable, modular, and open (i.e., mixed-vendor compatible) architecture lets companies turn any room into a world-class data centre on demand, extend the life of an existing data centre, or scale up as incrementally needed with step-and-repeat modular architecture for large data centres. Planning/design tools, reference designs, and interactive build-out tools let companies roll out high-density zones, upgrades, or complete data centres quickly.

Only Schneider Electric data centres, supported by our agile data centre physical infrastructure, enable a company’s business strategy to drive its IT — a far cry from the days when companies were hindered by their once-limiting infrastructure. Your business is dynamic. Now, your data centre can be, too, as a responsive, strategic asset instead of a static, passive cost centre.

The Schneider Electric unique end-to-end flexible data centre physical infrastructure enables customers to go dense, achieve greater energy and operational efficiencies, and adapt their future-proof infrastructure quickly to ever-changing business needs

Video security is playing an increasing role in the protection and improved operation of data centres around the world. And advances in video and IP technology make it possible to incorporate video security into integrated solutions for data centres – encompassing IT networks, electrical distribution, HVAC control, and access control. Such integration brings higher security, lower capital expenditures, and reduced operating expenses for data centres.

Protecting your data centrePhysical security is an often overlooked but critical element in the efficient and effective operation of data centres. Video security and access control are typically used to monitor who may enter (and who does enter) a data centre – a particularly critical mission at colocated data centres charged with protecting the data and equipment of multiple tenants. But the security mission goes beyond that. Data centres must deliver 24/7 reliability to their customers – downtime is costly and disruptive to business. And video security systems have always been depended upon to offer the same level of mission-critical round-the-clock performance.

Data centre success relies on the effective and efficient operation of multiple building and IT systems, nearly all of which can be suspect to physical threats. Video security is ideally suited to protect against many of these threats, while guarding key infrastructure and providing a safe and secure work environment. Data centre security entails protecting much more than racks of data servers. From the electrical substation and the chiller plant, to the back-up generators and fuel storage areas, video security guards your data centre’s critical support infrastructure from tampering, while ensuring continuity of operations.

Integration of video security with other building systems enables data centres to improve operations in other ways. Thermal imaging cameras can monitor not only perimeter security, entry points, and data rooms for

unwanted persons, but also aid in tracking ‘hot spots’ and heat-related issues – a major threat for data centre operations. Video can be used in conjunction with other monitoring to gain situational intelligence about a range of building systems issues, enabling operators to respond before potential problems become critical events. And video enables vigorous monitoring of large and remote data sites, while optimising expenditures on physical security staff.

As the global leader in video and security systems, Pelco by Schneider Electric™ protects people and property in more than a million places worldwide, from data centres and universities to government facilities and infrastructure, and much more.

Your data centre is only as robust as your security

As data centres grow in size and number, the need for data centre security is growing too. But data centre security isn’t restricted to just virus protection and warding off hacker attacks.
