Anaerobic Digestion (AD)AD is the controlled break down of organic matter without air to produce a combustible biogas and nutrient rich organic by-product. AD presents significant opportunities to landowners, farmers and

food processors with access to appropriate feedstocks. Determining the plant specification, obtaining planning, then commissioning an AD Plant is a hugely complex undertaking. JHWalter Energy has supported the delivery of multiple AD plants at a range of scales throughout the UK.

Solar Photovoltaic (PV)PV cells convert solar radiation into electricity. Solar PV provides an opportunity to offset electricity consumption and generate an income (from electricity sales and government incentives). With a limited

number of location requirements, suitability across multiple scales and minimal ongoing management, the scope for deployment of Solar PV is huge. JHWalter Energy has supported the delivery of dozens of Solar PV systems ranging from 4kW to 8MW.

BiomassBiomass is biological material, e.g wood, energy crops and agricultural residues. Biomass can be burnt to produce heat or heat. Biomass systems range from small wood burners to multi-megawatt plants. JHWalter

Energy has supported a range of clients to develop biomass energy systems and also to establish biomass supply companies.

Ground & Air Source Heat (GSHPs)GSHPs take energy from the ground and raise it to a higher temperature, using a process which is similar to a reverse refrigeration process. Delivering heat at 50-60°C, GSHPs are best suited to modern, well insulated

homes that utilise under floor heating. JHWalter Energy have experience of appraising the suitability of heat pumps for multiple installations and recommending suppliers where appropriate.

Solar ThermalHeat generated from solar water heating technology can be used at all scales Domestic, Commercial and Industrial. JHWalter can advise on potential deployment.

Low Energy BuildingsThere are a wide array of low carbon/energy efficient materials, designs and appliances on the market, making choosing the most appropriate for your needs and budget something of a challenge. Our extensive

experience of the installation of energy efficient technology in new and existing building stock, along with skills in low energy building design, we can help with your projects by providing independent, impartial advice on reducing carbon footprint and increasing sustainability.

HydroThe suitability of a watercourse for hydropower is dependent on the head (vertical fall) and flow (volume of water passing per second). Whilst the East Midlands presents few opportunities, the Energy

Team have reviewed the potential at multiple sites throughout the UK.

WindWind turbines convert wind energy into electrical energy. They present attractive electricity and income generation opportunities if you can find a commercially viable site. JHWalter Energy has experience across all

wind energy scales; from supporting landowners to develop their own small (<50KW) and medium (50 - 500KW) wind turbines, to negotiating the terms of option and lease arrangements for many mega-watt wind farms.

InvestmentReturns on capital for many renewable energy projects ranges from 10% to 20%, and where schemes such as the Enterprise Investment Scheme are appropriate these returns can be higher. Not everyone has the

opportunity to develop such projects due to location, resource etc., but conversely some with the development potential would prefer to look at a joint venture as opposed to debt funding. Contact the Energy Team to learn more about the opportunities.

Energy SavingThere are many opportunities presented by energy saving in business and in the home. Understanding which is most appropriate for your situation requires a knowledge of process management, building design

and available techniques and technologies to reduce energy losses. Through assessment of your energy needs (Energy Audit) the JHWalter Energy Team can assess the opportunities to both reduce cost by saving energy and where appropriate take advantage of the funding support available through Feed-in tariffs and the Renewable Heat Incentive.

Energy ScopingThere are many opportunities presented by renewable energy generation technologies. Understanding which is most appropriate for your situation is difficult. Through assessment of your energy needs and capacity for

installation (buildings and landholding) the JHWalter Energy Team can present the business cases for different renewable technologies. This provides the information required to make an informed choice on which technologies to pursue.

FundingWhere third party funding is required, the JHWalter Energy Team can assist by identifying possible funders, preparing the necessary business plans and supporting offer negotiations as required. Knowledge of grant

availability and the application processes also means the JHWalter Energy Team can advise on where such funds are available and how to access them.

£Project ManagementDue to the extended timescales from conception to commissioning, combined with the involvement of multiple contractors, project management is required to keep all project aspects on course. Furthermore due to

the nature of the project, clients are obviously keen to be kept up to speed with all developments. The JHWalter Energy Team offer a full project management service tailored to the project and clients needs.

FeasibilityOnce pursuit of particular technology has been chosen (based on site suitability and the underlying business case) more detailed investigation is required. This includes appraising the most suitable specification for

the respective technology, obtaining indicative quotes for all work, preparing more detailed financial forecasts (based on validated capital costs) and drafting a strategy for project delivery. Feasibility studies to support applications for lending can also be prepared.

FeasibilityUnderstanding the relevant regulatory landscape is vital to ensuring compliance, but also to determine the strategy of a project. With a detailed understanding of the current, proposed and still under debate regulations

the JHWalter Energy team can advise on how to best structure a project to maximise regulatory opportunities whilst minimising regulatory risks.

PlanningThe JHWalter Planning Team work hand in hand with the Energy Team as planning is so integral to any renewable energy project of significant scale. Having successfully secured permission for dozens of renewable

energy schemes throughout the UK the JHWalter Energy and Planning Teams have the experience required to navigate your project through planning in the most efficient way.

DeliveryDelivery of a renewable energy project requires many mutually dependant elements of work to be undertaken. Such elements include negotiating technology supply and maintenance contracts, securing a grid connection,

discharging planning conditions, registering for government incentives such as ROCS, FITS and the RHI, and securing preferential rates for Power Purchase Agreements. The JHWalter Energy Team offer advice and can deliver such work using in-house and third party expertise where required.
