In 2012, ComEd, an Exelon company, announced a $1.1 billion plan to build Smart Grid technologies in the Chicago region.

In 2016, EDF Renewable Energy launched its first North American battery energy storage project in the Chicago metro.

Illinois offers both reliability and affordability with its energy supply. The GridWise Alliance, a coalition of electricity industry stakeholders, ranked Illinois 2nd among U.S. states for its progress in modernizing its electrical grid. At the same time, Illinois ranks among the top 10 U.S. states for the most affordable commercial electricity rates with rates almost 20% below the U.S. average.

yAcross Illinois, renewable energy production is surging. Renewables’ share of total energy production has grown from less than 1% in 2005 to 5.4% in 2015. Illinois currently ranks 5th in the nation for installed wind power. There are 23 wind companies located in the Chicago metro, including 14 headquarters, more than any other U.S. city. With a production capacity of 1.5 billion gallons per year, Illinois is the third largest producer of ethanol. The U.S. Department of Energy has awarded over $99 million to universities, laboratories and industry partners in Illinois since 2005 for biofuel research. In 2015, $24 million was invested in solar projects in Illinois, a 48% increase over 2014.
