Helping to meet GreenDeal & ECO StandardsThe Green Deal is an initiative to reduce carbon emissions costeffectively by improving the energy efficiency of properties, includinghomes and businesses. Over half of the UK’s 26 million homes areinsufficiently insulated: the Green Deal sets out to tackle this problem.

The Energy Company Obligation (ECO)is a new programme that is designed toreduce Britain’s energy consumption byfunding home improvements wortharound £1.3 billion every year. ECOfunding is delivered to customerseither directly from the supplier or byorganisations working together, whichhave made special arrangements, suchas Green Deal Providers.

The Green Deal and ECO initiativesprovide assistance towards energysaving methods including externalwalls which are the single mostsignificant source of unused energyand can easily be improved to providethermal performance benefits.

One of the qualifiers for ECO fundingfor a project is the OFGEM requirementthat a 25 year guarantee is provided forexternal wall insulation. EnewallExternal Wall Insulation Systems canbe covered by a 25 year insurancebacked warranty in addition to theproduct and installer guarantee, allwork completed on low and high risedomestic properties to commercialbuildings.

Subject to acceptance by the insurancecompany, our clients then get theprotection of an insurance basedscheme, providing them with peace ofmind for not only the product but alsothe workmanship carried out on theirhome or building.

The dramatic transformation of the appearanceof properties alongside other initiatives cangive residents a renewed sense of pride andhelp as part of the wider regeneration of localcommunities.

By eradicating problems of damp, condensation and mould, ExternalWall Insulation can significantly improve the lifestyle of residents, offering a warmer and more comfortable place to live.

Our systems increase the comfort levels, as well as totally transformingthe appearance of the built environment.

Our three individual systems offer a complete solution for any type ofbuilding, ranging from low rise to high rise, with a wide range of finishesincluding renders, brick slips, modern acrylic coatings and claddingwhich not only reduce heat loss but also deliver all of the followingadvantages;

Render CarrierEnewall reinforcement mesh is an alkali resistingglass fibre mesh, which is embedded in a 3mm coatof Enewall adhesive applied over the flat and levelinstalled insulation boards. The reinforcing meshshall be continuous at corners and reveals and beoverlapped not less than 100mm at the meshedges. Strips of mesh 400mm x 200mm are usedfor diagonal reinforcing of the corners of door andwindow openings. A heavy duty armour mesh canbe used in areas requiring a higher impactresistance e.g. ground floor levels and refuse areas.

Mechanical FixingThe size and type of fixing is determined by pull outtest results and system wind loading requirements.Hole sizes to suit fixings, should be drilled throughthe system and into the substrate/masonry at anaverage rate of 6 per square metre, and the fixingsinstalled. Areas unsupported by fixings to thestandard pattern, i.e. adjacent to windows or doors, must have additional fixings. These should be fixedusing insulation fasteners to the approved fixingpattern.

External CornersExternal corners are formed using Enewall basecoat or Enewall angle beads depending onrequirements.

EavesAt the top of the walls the system is protected by anadequate overhang of the eaves. If this overhang isinadequate, a verge trim should be installed.

Silicone MasticA 5-6mm bead of Enewall approved silicone masticis applied prior to the application of finish rendercoat where the system meets window and doorsurrounds, sills, vents and all other areas wherethe render system comes into contact with differingsurfaces.

Render Movement JointsRender movement joints are to be positioned to suitthe features of the building normally at 7 metrecentres maximum. The movement joints are fixedby embedding them with the first coat on thesurface of the insulation.

Render Stop BeadsEnewall render stop beads can be used at the edgesof render work, reveals and where a change ofrender colour or finish is required. Stop beads arepowder coated galvanised steel, or stainless steel.

Rendering In accordance with the recommendations ofEnewall an adhesive coat with reinforcing mesh isapplied first with care being taken to achievecomplete covering of the mesh, first floor basetrims and all other beads, the system is thenfinished with a Enewall Dry Dash coat. Revealsshould receive one coat of smooth band render of 8to 10 mm.

* Ensure project survey is carried out by Enewalland a bespoke specification is supplied before theapplication of any systems or products.

Reinforcement MeshStainless Steel Diamond Mesh Pattern supplied insheets.

Stainless Steel Lath should be fixed using Enewallapproved fixings to Enewall standard fixing pattern.Sheets of lath must be lapped minimum 70mm onall edges.

Mechanical FixingThe size and type of fixing is determined by pull outtest results and system wind loading requirements.Hole sizes to suit fixings, should be drilled throughthe system and into the substrate at an averagerate of 8 per square metre, and the fixingsinstalled. Areas unsupported by fixings to thestandard pattern, i.e. adjacent to windows or doors, must have additional fixings. These should be fixedusing insulation fasteners to the approved fixingpattern.

External CornersExternal corners are formed using Enewall BaseCoat and / or external angle beads, available inpowder coated galvanised steel, stainless steel oraluminium.

Silicone MasticA 5-10mm bead of Enewall approved siliconemastic is applied prior to the application of finishrender coat where the system meets window anddoor surrounds sills, vents and all other areaswhere the render system comes into contact withdiffering surfaces.

Render BeadsMovement Joints are positioned such that largeelevations of render are broken down into smallerpanels at 7 metre centres maximum along thebuilding. These joints can sometimes be positionedin conjunction with existing building features tominimise their visual appearance. Render stopbeads are positioned at the edges of render panelsand at changes in colour of the render finish. Allbeads are available in Powder Coated GalvanisedSteel, Stainless Steel and Aluminium.

RenderingWhen all of the preceding applications arecomplete, Enewall Base Coat is applied to a totalthickness of 8-10mm thick. The chosen finalrender finish is now applied to the project inaccordance with the specification. Total renderthickness of the system will depend on the finalfinish specification; consult Enewall SalesDepartment for the range of finishes available.

Eaves At the top of the walls the system is protected by anadequate overhang of the eaves. If this overhang isinadequate, a verge trim should be installed.

There are four main types of insulation: Preparation

The existing surface may be jet washed if required to removeheavy particles, followed by a fungicidal treatment usingEnewall Fungicidal Wash prior to brushing down with a heavygauge brush to remove any fungal growth.

Base trims and any trims to first and subsequent floor levelsshould be fixed at 400mm centres. Where the substrate is un-even the trim can be embedded in Enewalls basecoat, toensure all beads and trims are level and in line.

Structural movement joints in the wall must be carriedthrough the system by the use of the Enewall full systemexpansion joint, fixed at 400mm centres, using 60mmhammer screws.

Site ApplicationApplication of the External Wall Insulation System should becarried out by approved contractors, in accordance with thespecification.

Finishes on External Wall InsulationFrom brick slip to render to stone cladding Enewall cansupply a huge variety of finishes depending on thespecification required, giving you a one stop shop for theentire build.

The choice of render colours, textures and finishes offered byExternal Wall Insulation makes it suitable for all types ofprojects, from a new build with a striking, contemporaryfaçade to a refurbishment where the original design of thebuilding needs to be skilfully replicated in order to meetplanning restrictions.

Acrylic

ExpandedPolystyrene (EPS & GraphiteEPS)

One of the primarily usedand most cost effectivesolutions in External WallInsulation. With goodinsulation performance, combined with the benefitof being lightweight andeasy to work with.

Mineral Fibre(Rock Fibre)

Offers good insulationperformance at a mid-range cost and is the bestchoice where fireresistance is top of the listof requirements.

Phenolic

Phenolic insulationnormally comes at ahigher cost than EPS orMineral Fibre but gives avery high insulationperformance, typicallyrequiring in the region of60% thickness ofcomparable insulations.

Polyisocyanurate(PIR)

Polyisocyanurate (PIR)insulation is highlyeffective, lightweight andhas the ability to bond tomost materials. PIRinsulation offers excellentthermal conductivity andhigh strength to weightratio.

Our Technical Team are able to give advice on the most suitable type of insulation for your building.

Heat LossU-value is a measure of heat loss in a building elementsuch as a wall, floor or roof and it measures how wellparts of a building transfer heat.

This means that the higher the U-value the worse thethermal performance of the building envelope. A low U-value usually indicates high levels of insulation, leadingto reduced energy bills. They are useful as it is a way ofpredicting the composite behaviour of an entire buildingelement rather than relying on the properties ofindividual materials. The thicker the insulation you canadd to your building, the better the wall, floor or roofwill perform and more energy is saved.

Enewall are able to provide U-value calculations for any specificproject, call 01698 373 305 for more information or alternativelyvisit our website www.enewall.co.uk to use our online U-valuecalculator.

Fire BarriersWhere horizontal fire barriers are requiredin the system this will be advised by amember of our technical team. This can beachieved by the use of Enewall’s HighDensity mineral wool board.

Render CarriersOur system will incorporate the followingdepending on the application requirementsand chosen finishes:-

• Alkaline resistant glass mesh• Armour reinforcement mesh• Stainless steel lath

AccessoriesAll accessories and trims are manufacturedto the highest standards. Generally powdercoated galvanised steel or stainless steel isrecommended although aluminium is usedwhere requested. Special items, such aspipe brackets are manufactured to suitrequirements. A wide range of insulants isavailable for use on our systems includingPIR, EPS, Mineral Wool and Phenolic, providing a choice and versatility to suit allspecifications.

Additional FeaturesA wide range of features can be formedusing additional layers of insulation, orspecifically designed features for the projectcan be manufactured and supplied in aselection of different materials.

Enewall can provide aspecification tailored for each specific project.

‘We congratulateEnewall on the awardof these BBACertificates. Externalwall insulation hasreceived a boost fromthe Green Deal andECO and with BBAApproval Enewall isnow well placed tobenefit from that.’

Alan Thomas, Sales and Communications Director BBA

Site Survey &Preliminary WorksA pre-installation survey of the property should becarried out to determine all site conditions andrestrictions. Pullout tests should be carried out todetermine the correct type of wall fixing suitable for thestructure and exposure conditions. The building shouldbe examined for the following:

• Suitability of substrate

• Detailing around windows, doors and eaves

• Damp course level

• Exact detailing position of movement joints

• Areas where flexible sealants must be used

• Ventilation plates, as per architects specification

Surfaces should be sound, free from loose material andreasonably flat. Severe irregularities can be levelledusing the Enewall basecoat render, if required. It isrecommended that any external plumbing be removedand alterations made to underground drainage toaccommodate its repositioning on the face of thesystem.

Before installation work commences, all roof gutteringshould be in place, and temporary outflow pipes fitted toshed rainwater clear of the wall surface and scaffolding.
