ENFIELDCITADEL BANDFounded in Tottenham, North London in 1892,the band soon established a reputation as one ofthe foremost Salvation Army bands. It was one ofthe first to broadcast for the BBC and manygramaphone records have been made, including in1961 the first long-playing record by a corpsband. The band has also been featured on radioand television in this country and overseas.

In 1972, with the merging of the two SalvationArmy corps, the band moved to Enfield on theoutskirts of North London, and adopted its presenttitle. There, as before, the band's service hascontinued in open-air activities, visits to hospitals,etc., in the same way as Salvation Army bandsthroughout the world.

Enfield Citadel Band travels extensively to presentits ministry of Salvation Army music makingthrougout the British Isles and overseas. Theforthcoming tour will be the band's second visit toCanada following a tour of the eastern states ofCanada and the USA in 1964. Tours of Sweden,Norway, Holland, Australia and New Zealandhave also been completed.

Among former bandmasters are several well-known Salvation Army musicians, includingColonel Albert Jakeway, Bandmaster ErnestEdwards and Lt. Col. Ray Steadman-Allen. Thepresent bandmaster, James Williams, wasappointed in January 1960 and, under hisleadership, the band has confirmed its reputationfor the highest possible standards whether on theconcert platform, in the recording studio or goingabout its usual weekly activities.

LEADERS.

BANDMASTER - JAMES WILLIAMS

Bandmaster, Jarnes Williams joined the cornet section ofTottenham Citadel Band (now Enfield) in 1944, whilst servingwith the Band of Her Majesty's Grenadier Guards. Since then,he has set a high standard of consistency in his continuousservice with the band as principal cornet, deputy bandmasterand, for the last 26 years, as bandmaster. In addition,Bandmaster Williams has been a member of the Rosehill Bandand the SP&S Band, conducted by Eric Ball and, on a numberof occasions, has appeared with the International Staff Band.Renowned as an excellent soloist both in and outside theSalvation Army, this will be the Bandmaster's fourth visit toCanada. He was featured by Dovercourt Citadel and HamiltonTemple as guest soloist/conductor in 1963 and 1982respectively and led the band during its previous tour of Canadain 1964.

CAPTAIN SHAW CLIFTONIHQ REPRESENTATIVE

Captain Shaw Clifton is accompanying the band as therepresentative of the Salvation Army's InternationalHeadquarters. Captain Clifton entered the International TrainingCollege in 1971 after teaching, for a number of years, in theLaw Faculty at Bristol University. He has served as an officeron the British Field, including three years as the commandingofficer at Enfield Citadel, and in Zimbabwe. His presentappointment, since 1982, is as Legal Secretary at InternationalHeadquarters.
