However, in reality, the day we think we’ve arrived we’re in trouble. Jesus can’t work with people who think they’ve got it all together and whilst this does not excuse our failures, it’s worth a timely reminder that we’re called because of God’s goodness and grace, and not because of anything we’ve done right or wrong. Yaconelli says again “Some of us actually believe that until we clean up <our> mess, Jesus won’t have anything to do with us. The opposite is true. Until we admit we are a mess Jesus won’t have anything to do with us.” So I confess! I’m a mess sometimes. I get things wrong and make mistakes. But I’m not giving up, because the cause is just too important – and besides, if we learn more from our failures than our successes then I’m going to be an exceptional learner. I hope you will too. It was all going so well…I was leading the 11-14s outreach programme at South West SPREE. We’d had three great sessions with a real sense that God was moving. Now it was the final morning and time for the ‘leaders versus young people’ challenge. Who would be the quickest to drink a blended concoction of various foods? On their own, all of the food would be pretty tasty but blended together it both looked and smelt grim. I was about to experience one of my most embarrassing moments in 23 years of youth ministry.

As the game began it wasn’t long before this concoction appeared to drastically disagree with one of the young people who…(I can hardly bring myself to say it)…turned her back to the crowd and then threw up. One of my team rushed to help her and I was left standing in front of a crowd of 150+ people with the deafening sound of tumble weed billowing across the marquee.

“Let’s sing a song” I said – in a desperate attempt to recover the situation. Coral, my 14 year old worship leader, stepped straight up to lead us, very graciously ignoring the spillage to her left on the floor. This was not ‘my finest hour’***

It’s in moments like this that I’m reminded of the words of author Mike Yaconelli… “I feel like I am the only dumbo in the Kingdom of God, a spiritual nincompoop lost in a ship full of brilliant biblical thinkers, an ungodly midget in a world of spiritual giants.”

Do you ever feel like that? That try as you might to get things right - even with good motives - sometimes you step back and think “I’m still

getting it wrong”.

Until we admit we are a mess Jesus won’t have anything to do with us.”

So I confess! I’m a mess sometimes. I get things wrong and make mistakes. But I’m not giving up, because the cause is just too important – and besides, if we learn more from our failures than our successes then I’m going to be an exceptional learner. I hope you will too.

Don’t lose heart.

WELCOME

In March David Hooper and Ray King took the Urban Saints foundation training courses into two centres in the Pangasinan province approx 50 miles from Manila (Philippines). Everything went smoothly including experiencing a tsunami and an encounter with a head hunter (now retired following conversion). David and Ray left behind three competent local trainers and 70 enthusiastic participants.

A lightning visit to Colombo by Wilson Beare and I saw 30 young people’s workers from 3 Sri Lankan cities gather for training. Our hosts Debbie and Pastor Sanna are keen to get the course happening all across Sri Lanka, and translation work is under way to prepare manuals in Tamil and Sinhalese. We plan to send two more trainers into Sri Lanka later this year to assist in a strategic leaders’ conference where the materials will be put to good use.

Immediately after the Sri Lankan training, Jeremy Russell and I took the course up to the Thai/Myanmar border. Working among the Karen people was a complete delight, and again 30 of the Karen Pwo people (hill tribe) embraced the materials. We have promised to return and they are working on translation in order for the local trainers to more effectively cover the 30 churches in

their network. Our host, Yai, was overcome when she attempted to express what the support and input meant to her in her role as children’s work coordinator for the Karen Baptist Association.

Some shoes are bigger to fill than others. When you take over something as important as ENGAGE, you have to be mindful of the great work that has gone before you. Jo Slater has faithfully produced this inspiring and uplifting publication for several years and leaves giant footwear for your new editor to occupy. But even she must have been somewhat intimidated by the description of another great wordsmith, now in Glory, that we discovered recently – the late, great Randle Manwaring…

“In May 1958 when Randle Manwaring was appointed as the new honorary editor of the monthly magazine The Crusader, a fellow Sutton leader, Mogul Barnard, wrote that the qualities necessary for this work include, among others, great energy, versatility, organising ability, and of course, a hearty devotion to the work of The Crusaders’ Union. Randle had these qualities in full measure.”

With this standard held up before me, I present my first edition of ENGAGE. Thank you for all you do to support, encourage, challenge and champion us to others – without your dedicated volunteering, faithful prayer and sacrificial giving we are nothing!

Westbrook, Urban Saints residential centre on the Isle of Wight, continues to be the scene of many wonderful holidaying experiences. Here’s one from this summer’s ‘Westbrook Wackiness’ holiday:

“Thank you so much for all of the work that is put into Westbrook Wackiness. The leaders are all so upbeat, positive and friendly all of the time. I felt cared for

and my faith has been strengthened a great deal during the past week.

And now I’m really excited! Excited about being a Christian, excited about witnessing to my friends, excited about using my talents for God and excited that there are only 357 days left until the best week of my life!”

IRELAND – HUNDREDS FLOCK TO MADNESS CAFÉ

EAST – “DO WE HAVE TO PRAY FOR DAVID CAMERON?!”

SOUTH EAST – “THE BEST WEEK OF MY LIFE”

Urban Saints Ireland had the opportunity to host a venue at Summer Madness, Ireland’s largest Christian festival. Approximately 4000 leaders and young people descended on the Kings Hall, Belfast for a weekend packed with seminars and workshops, the hottest acts on the Christian scene today, vibrant and engaging worship as well as being challenged from God’s word.

We had the privilege of having 17 volunteers come and serve with us as we hosted a café, with great coffee and tasty treats, and running a hectic entertainment programme. This included everything from acoustic sets from local

artists to the BIG FAT QUIZ OF THE YEAR via a Christian Hip Hop artist. We also ran two workshops over the course of the weekend on Energize and MIMIC and as a result of this we were blessed as a number of new churches connected with us.

Our simple prayer was that all the young people and youth leaders in our venue would know that we are all about Riotous Fun, Adventurous Faith, Genuine Friendship, and Life in all its Fullness!

Wilson BeareIreland Director

24 hours of prayer? One hour sounded pretty daunting to our group! But five brave young people turned up on Saturday morning to give it a shot.

After a brief explanation, different translations of the Lord’s prayer were handed around and read aloud, then lumps of the toddlers’ playdough to ‘be creative’ while listening to a Psalm. But we were not going to sit around in a circle all morning. Stones, string, a globe, a local map, a dice, candles, a ‘tent’, a bowl of water and post-its were scattered around the youth lounge, with a sign next to each inviting different kinds of prayer – thank you, sorry, please.

With a CD playing, young people and leaders prayed for political leaders (‘Do I HAVE to pray for David Cameron?!’‘He’s Prime Minister, he needs your prayers!’), for a missionary trip to Rwanda, for Christians in prison for their faith, and much, much, more! It was difficult to stop them and we overran!

Susan SydenhamColchester Baptist Church

We now have 921 groups within the Urban Saints family – this represents a nett rise of 95 since the last edition of ENGAGE. Please keep praying for these groups and their hard-working volunteer teams!

SPREE South East – the biggest SPREE of all - takes place at Great Walstead School in Hayward’s Heath. The 900 people who attended had their own full-size fairground dodgems alongside a whole host of other activities.Mark Ritchie returned as the speaker for teenagers at the event and his words helped 240 people into making commitments. It was the wettest SPREE South East in history, but the team sailed through the weekend, even though one of the organisers was struck down with chronic back pain after an unfortunate tango dancing accident!

The Frontier Centre in Northamptonshire played host to Midlands & East SPREE, and as such had the luxury of some of the finest outdoor activities at their disposal, such as the legendary King Swing. The weather was warm and sunny and of the 500 people who came, 80 chose to give their life to the Lord. One new addition this year was the XCD session which was created to allow young people to ‘go deeper’ in teaching. Sara Taylor, our Midlands Director explained how it went: “It was awesome to see it grow from just eight petrified teenagers on Friday night to an all worshipping, dedicated and hungry for the word, group of over sixty young people by Saturday afternoon. An overwhelming success.”

SPREE is fast becoming one of the ‘must attend’ Christian festivals for young people on the calendar. Aiming to provide an experience of the very highest quality at the lowest possible cost, this summer has been the busiest SPREE season ever.

Over three thousand people attended the weekends, enjoying:

RIOTOUS FUN through an action packed activity programme

ADVENTUROUS FAITH with engaging and relevant worship and teaching to help young people embrace the world-changing Christian adventure

GENUINE FRIENDSHIP enabling leaders to spend plenty of time relationally with their own young people and leaders from other groups

LIFE IN ALL ITS FULLNESS ensuring that by the end of the weekend, everyone has opportunities to realise their God-given potential through ongoing discipleship

But for all those things in common, each SPREE is refreshingly unique.

Let’s take a tour…

SPREE SOUTH EAST

MIDLANDS & EAST SPREE SOUTH WEST SPREEEveryone had a fantastic time at South West Spree 2011 despite the rain. There were more than 500 young people and leaders on site and the new venue at Shobrooke Park in Devon definitely got the thumbs up from everyone who came! Activities ranged from laser clay pigeon shooting to circus skills to breakdancing. Speakers at the weekend included Duggie Dug Dug and Matt Summerfield, who spoke to the older age group in an outdoor amphitheatre! One highlight was when a helper who had come with one of the groups made a first time commitment.

“SPREE HELPED ME TO UNDERSTAND GOD IN A WAY THAT WASN’T BORING”

SPREE IN THE BORDERSYoung people at SPREE in the Borders had the chance to ride on the amazing 300 metre zip wire at Whithaugh Park as part of the activity programme.Even the rain and midges failed to dampen the spirits of the 350 people on site, and stories of individuals making commitments are still trickling into the Urban Saints Scotland office. All the leaders who came see this SPREE event as a vital part of their annual calendar!

SPREE NORTH

SPREE 2012

SPREE WALES

There were 100 decisions to follow Jesus at SPREE North – praise God! After torrential downpours on the Friday, the sun shone down throughout the Saturday and Sunday at Bramhope Scout Centre near Leeds. The 400 people on site took part in a whole host of activities, including bungee trampolines, go karts, pony hop racing and crazy golf. The weekend also saw a visit from award winning girl band GoldDigger. One highlight was when a group from Grimsby stood at the front in the final meeting and bravely gave their testimonies of how their lives had changed as a result of SPREE 2011.

The spiritual programme at SPREE Wales, which took place in Llanelli, had something of a pioneering approach to it as they focused on a theme of ‘Life to the Max.’ Five venues were provided for the 850 on site, each with a different style of worship, rather than splitting the groups by age as is done at other SPREE’s. The weekend had a packed activity programme, which included zorbs and DJ workshops, and hot tubs were provided for the less adventurous!

In 2012, we are already looking forward to an even bigger and better SPREE programme. We’ll be praying that once again, God moves in power to help hundreds of young people begin their faith journey.

“LOTS OF YOUNG PEOPLE MAKING FIRST TIME COMMITMENTS AND MANY WANTING TO DO MORE FOR JESUS. THIS IS WHAT IT’S ALL ABOUT.”

“PLEASE NEVER STOP DOING SPREE. IT BRINGS SO MANY PEOPLE TO CHRIST AND TAKES THEM ON.”

Keep praying for all those who attended SPREE – particularly those making first time commitments to Christ – and continue to remember the SPREE events happening in the Scottish Highlands and the Isle of Skye this September.

ReAct – the summer mission project, running family fun days, community-based social action projects and open-air services – hit South London this summer. God did some amazing things and the response from the local communities was equally awe-inspiring.

One of the young people on the team organised a treasure hunt which led to three people in a family, and two of their friends experiencing Christ. Tears of joy were shed as God moved in their lives. One of the people attending

told us “it was nice to see the church giving to the community…” and at the fun day location in Croydon, God held the rain throughout the programme. Someone commented that “the rain clouds were moving to left and right of the venue!”

Yemi DaramolaCroydon Grace Urban Saints

“…an indescribable experience. Not only did God greatly challenge and develop me personally, He also changed and entered into the lives of numerous young people.” Stuart

This summer Urban Saints Ireland again took a team of young leaders to the predominantly nationalist/republican area of West Belfast to spend the first part of our week-long team engaging with the local community in a number of service projects. This was a real time of challenge and learning as two historically divided people groups had the opportunity to serve together, as well as exploring what divides our country, where there are similarities and what does the Gospel of Jesus Christ mean in it all.

For the second portion of our time with our host Youth Initiatives we helped serve at their local camp for 150+ young people from across the province. Young people came together for 5 days of banter, competitions, workshops and also to had the opportunity to hear and respond to the Gospel. It was a privilege for the team to be able to serve in a number of ways on the camp and to witness many young people respond to Jesus’ invitation to follow Him.

I personally have come away with a greater understanding of the issues facing our nation and a renewed hope that God will use a generation of young people to bring blessing to our communities.

Wilson BeareIreland Director

ReBuild provides a life-changing experience, not only for those who receive a new home for their family but also for those young people who grab a hammer and a saw and get involved:

“Mexico was the most amazing experience in my life. I got the chance to help people by building them a house, meet other Christians from all over our country and get a lot closer to God. The worship was a refreshing change to what I get at my church and I got a lot out of it – especially when Gayla Congdon (founder of ReBuild partners Amor Ministries) spoke about ‘chasing lions’. It has opened lots of new opportunities for me and I feel like a new person! – a lion chaser!”

Don’t forget you can join with us in prayer for everything that is going on throughout the Urban Saints movement by subscribing to Pray4Change, our twice yearly prayer diary. You can get this by calling the Support Centre or emailing Vicky ([email protected]) or you can view it online at www.urbansaints.org/pray4change. You can even get prayer updates direct to your computer by following ‘Pray4Change’ on Twitter.

You may know that our Urban Saints groups pay a subscription to have access to the Energize package but unfortunately, even this £25 per month doesn’t cover all that goes into making this indispensible resource available to all our groups. This doesn’t even take into account all of the other opportunities, activities and resources that Urban Saints are constantly developing and maintaining and those groups who cannot afford the subscriptions in the first place.

We get much of our support from a handful of key people and trusts and this is so vital to all that we do in the movement but we need to grow a strong foundation of lots of smaller regular donations too. Could you be one of these people – giving a little on a regular basis? Can you stand with us in this way? Even £5 or £10 a month can make a massive difference to the stability of Urban Saints. (See the ENGAGE response form for further details)

What a knight !!! As the gates opened 1400 people streamed in to enjoy exclusive use of the rides at Camelot Theme Park for two and a half hours followed by The Steels last gig in their original line up and an inspirational chat from Martin Dickson, the Wirral YFC Director.

The youth and children’s leaders were blessed with a luxurious chill out area as their groups explored the park. It was a real blessing and privilege to work with six other organisations and denominations to host the first ever One Summer Knight, the feedback was overwhelming and plans are under way for One Summer Knight 2012 !! NORTH EAST – 1500 ENJOY A BIG NIGHT OUT

A major youth event has been established in the North East by Urban Saints in partnership with the Church of England. ‘The Big Night Out’ took place on the evening of Saturday May 21st at Lightwater Valley, one of the north’s biggest theme parks. Almost 1500 people enjoyed all the white knuckle thrills that the park had to offer, including ‘the Ultimate’, Europe’s longest rollercoaster.

After three hours exclusive use of the rides, everyone gathered to be entertained by Philippa Hanna, with Matt Summerfield giving the Gospel message. Ben Esse, a teenager from Pickering Urban Saints, summed the evening up.

“The Big Night Out was a great experience. Everyone who went thoroughly enjoyed themselves, with great rides and brilliant entertainment to finish the night! It helped to see so many other Christians our age enjoying themselves out of Sunday service. I’m looking forward to next year!”

The date is already set for the Big Night Out 2012 – Saturday 19th May. You don’t have to be from the North East region to come along!

11THE YOUTHWORK SUMMIT

GETTING YOUR KIDS THROUGH CHURCH WITHOUT THEM ENDING UP HATING GOD

Friday October 21st Ignatian Retreat / The Big ChillSaturday October 22nd The Youthwork SummitManchester [Audacious Church]

The Youthwork Summit is a youthwork event like no other. It’s a day where ideas and stories change your world. Twenty different speakers – each with a few minutes to share their experience, ideas and inspiration including ground-breaking new research and insights from the media – will take part and you get to hear them all. From unknown tales from extraordinary youthworkers to visionaries with ideas that will challenge and change how we all do youth work, you’ll have the chance to hear, meet and discuss with these contributors – with the space to reflect on and debate with other delegates at the Summit. This is a truly unmissable youthwork experience.

What’s more, the day before we have Mark Yaconelli coming over from America to lead an Ignatian Retreat – a spiritual journey of prayer and reflection in St Ann’s

church, a 300 year old oasis in the centre of Manchester. Then we have The Big Chill – an opportunity to meet, hang out and eat with loads of great youth workers from all over the UK!

Urban Saints, along with Youthscape and Youthwork Magazine, have been involved with the Summit from its very inception and we’re really excited about the 2011 event!

For more information about tickets, travel arrangements, accommodation and the speakers appearing at the Summit, go to www.youthworksummit.com

Every year, thousands of young people leave the church. However, many of them don’t actually turn their back on God, but on something else. This tour,

presented by Care For The Family, is an opportunity for parents, church leaders and youth workers to discover what that “something”

might be – and try to change it.Urban Saints are supporting this vital tour – which also features Rob Parsons, plus performances from Saltmine Theatre Company and Phatfish – and all the events start at 7.30pm
