MUSICThe songs performed in the Jump with Jill show are the hit tracks written, produced, and recorded by Registered Dietitian and musician, Jill Jayne, MS, RD. The songs transform mun-dane routines into singable anthems – for parents and kids alike. Repeat these healthy mes-sages in your school or home with one of these three exciting CDs:

GET ME GOIN’Get Me Goin’ was released in 2008 at the American Dietetic Association’s Food & Nutrition Conference & Expo (FNCE) where Jill performed for a group of nutrition professionals from around the world. As Jill’s first CD, the CD’s title captures Jill’s social movement toward a larger stage for nutrition education. Get Me Goin’ is also the title of a song about the impor-tance of eating breakfast that features percussion by spoons on bowls, pouring milk, shaking cereal and a frying pan stir. The 11 track CD comes in a recycled digipak that includes the lyrics on an 8-panel fold out poster.

GOIN’ ON A JOURNEY: SONGS FOR EVERY BODYGoin’ on a Journey: Songs for Every Body was released in 2010 as the follow-up to Get Me Goin’, this time for preschool-aged kids. It was considered for a 2012 Grammy nomination for Best Children’s Album. The Journey travels to healthy choruses about fueling your choo choo train with healthy foods, giving new foods a second try, doing jumping jacks like Jill, dancing “The Water Polka,” wearing sunscreen when you’re having fun in the sun, getting your bubbles on at bath time, brushing your teeth before bedtime, and dreaming about doing it all again tomorrow. The 16-track CD comes in a recycled digipak that includes the lyrics on a 10-panel fold out poster.

GREATEST HITS COLLECTION (DELUXE EDITION)The Jump with Jill Greatest Hits Deluxe Edition features the ten songs performed live in the Jump with Jill show, a compilation album of hits from Get Me Goin‘ (2008) and Goin’ on a Journey: Songs for Every Body (2010) packaged in a slim CD jacket. This version is not just for the superfan; it was designed to align perfectly with the Jump with Jill Nutrition Rock Invasion curriculum.

Follow-up exposure to the music improves the impact of the live show. So keep kids singing and dancing about healthy habits in the classroom and at home with a copy of the Jump with Jill show soundtrack. Although the music is available through iTunes and Amazon, we are able to offer the CD at a discount for bulk purchases. There is no minimum order and shipping is free.

THE SCIENCE BEHIND OUR ARTOUR ISSUE: CHILDHOOD OBESITYThe science we’ve used to create our art has its foundation in the obesity epidemic raging through childhood. Nationwide, 33.6% of kids are overweight, and 17% are obese.

OUR ANGLE: WE ARE INUNDATED WITH MESSAGES FOR UNHEALTHY FOOD. Poised to fall like Rome, the morbidity and mortality of an obese America threatens our economic health and security by decreasing workplace productivity, burdening our healthcare system, and challenging eligibility for the military. But people know what it takes to be healthy. Even a child can tell you to eat your vegetables and exercise every day. The gap from knowledge to action (and making those actions into habits) competes with 8.5 hours each day we spend in front of a screen, frequently sedentary. From the TVs at the gym to the sleeve on your coffee cup to the stadium sponsorship of your local team, we see nearly 5,000 ads per day, with the majority of food ads targeted to kids promoting foods high in sugar, salt, and fat.

OUR APPROACH: USE THE SAME TACTICS NORMALLY USED TO SELL JUNK FOOD TO GET KIDS ENGAGED, MOVING, AND LEARNING ABOUT HEALTHY HABITS.With fewer resources, we must be as invasive and persuasive as the media that can transform an undesirable, useless, and unhealthy product into a desirable, hip, multi-million dollar brand. The reality is that people expect to be entertained, or they will change the channel. Welcome to the wild world of Jump with Jill.

WHY WE ROCKThe science behind our art is to craft a theory-based, behaviorally-focused message that engages, entertains, and educates. Our recipe for rock is:

(1) USING BEHAVIOR CHANGE THEORY AS THE FOUNDATIONJump with Jill is more than just kiddie rock -- the show is an anthem for effective behavioral science. Pulling from the Health Belief Model, the Theory of Planned Behavior, and the Social Cognitive Theory, we know an individual’s behavior choice is influenced by many factors including taste, attitude, social norms, knowledge, skills, and social pressure. Using the celebrity of Jill and the interactive music shapes attitudes, social norms, and skills.

(2) MODELING THE STRATEGIES OF MASS MEDIA To compete with the funding and reach of mass media, effective health education incorporates what is already working in the commercial realm: slogans, jingles, characters, excitement, and social norming. Nowhere is brand awareness more important than with healthy habits.

(3) ENGAGING OUR AUDIENCE. We each have a preference for the way we take in new information. Take the time to deliver your message to all learners so everyone under-stands, even if it means sacrificing the amount of content. We don’t just talk about exercising more, we teach the dance steps! By tapping into multiple modalities of learning -- visual, auditory, and kinesthetic -- many types of learners are included in the interactive experience, enhanc-ing memory of these important messages.

Research on Jump with Jill demonstrates kids are tuned in to the Rockstar Nutritionist. Not only does Jump with Jill get kids rockin’ and learnin’, the messages translate into measurable behavioral improvements. These changes include an increase in physical activity, drinking more water and drinking less soda. Even seven months after seeing the show, kids could still recall the messages, particularly about the importance of physical activity. Not bad when you consider how easily kids forget their homework, and that Jill’s one time intervention is competing with the well-funded, unhealthy competition kids see daily in advertisements.

STUDY DETAILSIn support of America on the Move, Fort Wayne Cardiology in Indiana conducted an independent evaluation of Jump with Jill in the fall of 2009. Researchers determined the show had a meaningful impact on 3rd, 4th and 5th graders’ behavior with regard to health and fitness. Seven weeks after watching Jump with Jill, 153 students completed a questionnaire examining their responses to the performance.

SPECIFIC FINDINGS

AFTER SEEING THE JUMP WITH JILL SHOW:

• 75% of all students reported trying to be more active.

• 81% of 4th graders and 74% of 3rd graders reported trying to drink more water.

• 58% of the 3rd graders reported trying to drink less soda.

• 80% of 3rd graders reported telling a parent about Jill’s health and nutrition messages.

• More than half of 3rd and 4th graders reported that a family member had changed their behavior due to Jill’s messages – drinking more water, drinking less soda and/or being more active.

SEVEN MONTHS AFTER JUMP WITH JILLOf particular significance is a follow-up study conducted seven months after students’ exposure to Jump with Jill. The message regarding the importance of physical activity remained especially strong and continued to be recalled at similar rates to the initial assessment at seven weeks.(1)

THE RESEARCH

(1) Follow-up results apply only to 3rd and 4th graders, as 5th graders were not available for the follow-up study because they moved to the Middle School.

THE STORY

THE EARLY YEARS Jill was born in Pittsburgh to an art teacher and construction worker, where she learned how to teach and how to work. In high school, Jill was captain of the cross-country team, lead of the musical and valedictorian. Jill attended Penn State where she graduated with degrees in nutrition and theater. She developed a reputation as the singing nutrition major by creating and performing original musicals and producing rock & roll versions of the Penn State fight songs that appeared on ESPN.

Just before graduation, Jill landed a job as the writer and host of a nationally-syndicated children’s nutrition program on PBS. Realizing that she could apply her interests in media to address the growing childhood obesity epidemic, Jill moved to the children’s entertainment capital of the world, New York City. While pursuing her Registered Dietitian (RD) credential and MS in Nutrition Education at Columbia University, Jill worked as a public school teacher and racked up stage credits as an off-Broadway actress, Radio Disney DJ, model and puppeteer.

DEVELOPMENT OF JUMP WITH JILLDrawing from her experience in entertainment and training in nutrition, Jill decided to create her own show that could use the same tools of effective mass media to teach kids about health. Jump with Jill debuted in 2006 in Central Park as a free street show, where Jill took tips in a pot.

During this time, Jill was also writing and performing with her rock band formed with her brother Mark, spending summers on The Vans Warped Tour and a season of The Next Great American Band from the producers of American Idol on FOX. Jill decided to combine the most successful elements of the rock band and the nutrition street show into the greatest nutrition rock show the world would ever see. The Jump with Jill CD was released in 2008 and by 2009, the Jump with Jill show completed its first national tour. CDs were selling, Jill was blogging, people were Friending and reporters wanted interviews.

TODAYJill is now a professional Rockstar Nutritionist, and that little idea–to use entertainment to address childhood obesity–is now a company, Note to Health. Jill keynotes regularly at conferences throughout the country about the science behind her work. Jill is an expert at creating and delivering interactive media about health for kids and families. She is the poster child for redefining how we teach kids about health, taking her rock & roll nutrition approach to other age groups, audiences and media formats.

Since Jump with Jill’s inception, the show has been performed for over a quarter million kids across the United States and Europe. With the show’s growing popularity, Jill personally casts and trains a Jill army to perform Jump with Jill around the country. Jill’s original music and video productions have led her to the White House to meet Michelle Obama and a 2011 Grammy nomination consideration for Best Children’s Album. With the recent release of the Nutrition Rock Invasion curriculum, Jump with Jill has grown from a one-hour rock & roll nutrition assembly into a year long rock & roll nutrition intervention.
