An Introduction from the Engineering and Technology Board (ETB)

ForewordWelcome to the eighth edition of the Careers Catalogue, designed to helpteachers, careers advisers and the young people they support to find-outmore about career opportunities in the engineering and technology sector.Technology and engineering underpin both our standard of living, and theeconomic health of the UK.

Teams of engineers and technologists, applying science andmathematics, touch our lives in many different ways and have a key role to play. A career in engineering, therefore, offers many challenges andexciting opportunities in a wide range of jobs. No matter what originalspecialisation is chosen, a career in engineering is a rewardingexperience, in terms of job satisfaction and lifestyle.

The UK economy is highly dependent on engineering and technology(E&T) skills. Qualified engineers are now needed across a wide range ofsectors and settings to provide the necessary skills and expertise whichare central to sustaining and further advancing the technology behind somany day to day products and systems. While many E&T students godirectly into E&T careers, many choose to work in other parts of theeconomy; the skills gained by E&T students are highly prized in thefinance and business sectors, for example, where the analytical andnumerical skills set them apart.

We thank you for your continued support and hope you find this latestedition to be of value to give support to those considering a career inengineering and technology.

Dr John Morton,Chief Executive, the Engineering and Technology Board (ETB)
