PROGRAM OVERVIEW

JOB PROSPECTS

UNDERGRADUATE DEGREE IN ENGLISH EDUCATIONUndergraduates finish the English Education program prepared to meet the demands of the teaching profession. As part of their course work, students have numerous opportunities to work with adolescents and their teachers in local schools, tutor individual at-risk students, teach small groups, and plan and present lessons to middle and high school classes prior to engaging in a semester-long student teaching internship.

As they practice planning, delivering, and managing high quality instruction, students are guided to rich understanding of the many print and non-print literacies that define today’s communication.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, job outlook for middle school and high school teachers is expected to grow up to 17 percent through 2020; That translates into over 350,000 new jobs.

The median national annual salary range for middle school and high school teachers is $51,380 to $53,230 per year.

Teaching is one of the most rewarding careers, and a typical path usually offers opportunities for professional development and growth. Middle and high school English/Language Arts teachers make a difference in the lifelong learning experience of their students, as well as the quality and standards of the programs they teach. They generally work school hours when students are present, and use nights and weekends to prepare lessons and grade papers. This includes coursework addressing ways

that technology can enhance teaching and learning, the roles that English teachers assume when working with non-native speakers of English who are English Language Learners (ELLs), and the English teacher’s role in reading instruction.

SCHOLARSHIPSOur College also offers over $300,000 in scholarships — more than any other college of education in the state of Florida. To see what scholarships await you, visit coe.fsu.edu/FreeMoney
