Internships that prepare you for the workforce

daniel mouraBachelor of engineering/Bachelor of Business management

The opportunity to apply what I have learnt and am still learning at UQ was a welcome one. My internship with Brisbane Transport gave me the opportunity to further my knowledge and skill base in a practical environment. It is one thing to study theory and do assignments at university, but the independence and collaborative experience I gained from the internship is invaluable.

I was tasked with conducting an in depth analysis on the lifecycle costs of diesel buses versus CNG buses. After the analysis a report on my findings was written and once completed I was given the opportunity to present my findings to senior management at the Brisbane City Council. Though initially daunting, it was great to get that exposure on the different aspects of a job; not only analysing data, but presenting it in a concise manner to a relevant audience too.

Overall the internship helped me effectively link my study to the real world; the experience gained was truly invaluable. If anyone were looking to understand and learn how to apply what they are studying, I would urge them to take advantage of the work experience opportunities offered through BEL UQ.

full-timeTo complete your degree on a full-time basis, the standard study load is eight units (4 courses worth 2 units each) per semester. Full-time study is defined as 75% or more of the standard full-time load for a program (i.e. enrolled in at least six units per semester, or three to four courses, for most programs). International students must be enrolled in eight units per semester. It is estimated that for each course a student would have approximately 4-5 contact hours in lectures and tutorials and would also need to do additional hours of study.

Part-timeAustralian students can study some UQ programs part-time (usually 1 to 2 courses per semester). In some cases, classes are scheduled multiple times per week and students can choose either day or evening classes. This does not occur in all programs. If you are intending to study solely in the evenings, you should check the availability and timing of classes within your preferred program. For more infomation refer to specific program information.

Dual Programs/DegreesDual programs (or degrees) enable you to study two bachelor degrees at the same time. There are many benefits to studying a dual degree, such as the flexibility to study several areas of interest at once and the ability to build a diverse range of knowledge. A varied skill set is an attractive asset to employers within industry. By completing a dual program, you graduate with two degrees and save up to a year of study (when compared to studying the two separate degrees). You may choose to undertake a dual program offered within the Faculty of Business, Economics and Law or combine it with a degree offered by another faculty. The additional knowledge and skills gained will give you a competitive edge in the workforce, and significantly broaden your career possibilities.

Please note that you must satisfy the prerequisites of both programs to gain entry.

To see what dual programs are offered, refer to the program pages of this guide for: Business Management – page 16, Commerce – page 20, Economics – page 26, Tourism – page 32

honoursThe honours program is an optional fourth year of study for high achieving students. An honours year helps you expand your knowledge in a particular area of study, and makes you more distinctive in terms of the skills you can offer to potential employers. Entry into the honours programs is highly competitive and students will need to apply to be considered.

Postgraduate StudyUQ postgraduate qualifications can provide you with specialised knowledge, give you a significant advantage in the employment market, enable you to upgrade your qualifications, enhance your promotion potential, or pave the way for a career in academia.

Studying Another Program at UQStarting your study at UQ in a different program than you originally intended can be a good way to build an impressive academic record that can qualify you for your desired program based on your academic performance (Grade Point Average or GPA) in your first year of study. If you select courses offered within the BEL Faculty that overlap between programs such as the Commerce, Economics, Business Management or International Hotel and Tourism Management programs, you may be eligible for credit for some courses, that are common between these programs. The minimum duration prior to admission to a more competitive program is generally one year full-time of academic study (16 units or 8 courses).

Courses Offered at UQ CollegeUQ College is a company owned by The University of Queensland, developed to provide alternative pathways to university study. It specialises in the delivery of academic preparatory programs equivalent to Year 12 completion, as well as an associate degree level qualification.

Tertiary Preparation Program

The primary aim of this non-award program is to equip you with the skills and attributes you will need to successfully engage in university study. Once you have completed this program you will have qualified for entry into the associate degree program.

Associate degrees

The associate degree currently offered at UQ College is a 16-month program that specialises in business. You will receive a solid foundation in the theory and practice of contemporary business management. Once you have completed the associate degree you may choose to join the workforce or continue your studies towards a Bachelor of Business Management at UQ.

For more information visit uqcollege.edu.au

Credit for Previous Study and Recognised Prior learningAt UQ we value and recognise previous formal study undertaken at other higher education institutions which can include TAFE, Open Learning Australia, other universities and some accredited private learning organisations. We also take into consideration if you had previous informal studies and can demonstrate it meets an equivalent level appropriate to your desired program at UQ.

There are several ways we can recognise your previous study. UQ may deem your prior study to meet the necessary entry requirements for admission into your preferred program. You can also apply for transfer of credits up to a specified limit, which may decrease the time required to complete a program at UQ. Lastly, you may gain exemption for courses which may form part of the core requirements for a particular program allowing you the freedom to substitute these with other courses or electives.

Jackie cheng Bachelor of Business management / Bachelor of Arts graduate (2004) Key Account manager, L’Oreal Paris

As Key Account Manager for L’Oréal Paris, Jackie Cheng plays a critical role in helping one of Europe’s biggest beauty brands to stay at the forefront of the market. From her base in Dusseldorf, Jackie heads a team whose role it is to monitor shoppers’ behaviour and watch how the market is developing.

Our day to day business involves dealing with questions such as; How is the market developing? Which brands are leading the growth? What are the trends for the coming year? How are our shoppers behaving? What needs to be considered given the evolving trends? Jackie explains.

Jackie graduated from UQ Business School in 2004 with a dual degree in Business Management and Arts. During her time she spent a year overseas on a scholarship with DAAD, the German academic exchange body.

She feels that UQ Business School has prepared her well for the business world.

The content of the courses was not only challenging but contained real business issues and obstacles, she says. I am especially grateful to all the professors and tutors I was able to meet during my study at UQ Business School. Thank you for your inspiration, time and your advice on my career.

Programs that connect with industryAs part of the Business Management degree Marketing Strategy course students engaged in group projects that saw them collaborate on marketing campaigns for local businesses and not for profit organisations. The top groups were able to present their campaigns to their industry partners, an experience that student Jessica Syam found invaluable.

My favourite part of the project was producing a report that was worthy enough to present to Cameron (OzHarvest Brisbane Coordinator) from Oz Harvest, our team’s organisation.

It gave me a pretty spot on idea of what really happens in the industry. Unlike other projects I felt like this one was important and worthwhile because Oz Harvest could use these ideas and build on their company. Unlike writing essays or proposals for “imaginary” companies that are typically used in other courses, being able to interact directly with the client to gain further insight was priceless, she said.

The project has encouraged Jessica to stay involved with the organisation.

From learning about the company in this project, I am extremely keen to volunteer with the company and provide further support if needed, as learning about their views and beliefs really resonated with me, she said.

The other industry organisations involved include Melinda’s Gluten Free Goodies, Buderim Ginger, GIVIT Kids, GIVIT Day and Super Retail Commercial.

UQ Economics student shines at the 2012 NATO Youth SummitUniversity of Queensland economics student Belinda McEniery has been a participant at the Model NATO Youth Summit in Brussels.

On a trip sponsored by the School of Economics, Ms McEniery was one of 221 university students that attended the largest simulation of NATO’s decision-making process from July 8 – 13.

The Conference brought together students from over 38 countries and 79 universities to debate the Summit’s central theme ‘Political responsibility through leadership, innovation and strategic thinking in the Twenty-first Century’.

The Model NATO Youth Summit was one of the most unique and interesting opportunities available to university students, said Ms McEniery.

While most participants were from NATO member states and a part of delegations of 6 from their universities, Ms McEniery was the only Australian to be selected as one of 21 individual delegates.

The ultimate goal of the annual Model Summit is to deepen NATO’s decision-making process, while creating a platform for students to enhance their consensus-reaching skills, and master the art of negotiation.

Jimmy zengBachelor of engineering / Bachelor of economics Shell Australia graduate Development Program commencing in 2014

UQ Bachelor of Engineering/Bachelor of Economics graduate, Jimmy Zeng, has set his sights on the oil and gas sector after he landed a paid internship with Shell—one of the world’s largest companies.

Jimmy’s core responsibilities included assisting with a large-scale project and providing commercial and statistical analysis support to the Reliability Group (economic and cost/benefit). In addition, he also had the opportunity to develop a working knowledge of downstream oil and gas processes as well as understanding and analysing technical, economic and commercial data.

Most people ask what an engineer and an economist could possibly ever have in common, and the answer is critical thinking.

Economics is a field of study that teaches you how to think critically about the world. I chose to study it because I was curious about the world and the choices made under scarcity and what this meant in terms of commerce, government and society.

Working with Shell Australia gave me the opportunity to combine both my economics and engineering training to help manage a scarce resource.

The UQ School of Economics’ best feature is its ability to make you emerge even more enthusiastic than when you take your first step on campus! The skills that you develop equip you with the knowledge, skills and curiosity to succeed in the professional world.

I can hardly imagine myself being where I am now without the UQ experience. I’ve been given a quality education, learning support, career advice and opportunities to network with like-minded individuals.

Becci reidAssociate Project manager, mCi Australia Bachelor of international Hotel and Tourism management (majoring and event management and Hospitality management) graduate (2009)

I extended my degree for an additional year, and was therefore able to work part time as an Event Support Officer for AgForce Queensland, gaining extensive experience before graduating. By studying and working in the industry at the same time, I was able to see additional benefit in my subjects and immediately apply them to my professional life—enjoying them much more as a result.

In my current position I manage a number of aspects of event management, including client liaison, financial management, speaker management and program development support, sponsorship, marketing support, design and print production management, website development, social event coordination, tours and transport operations liaison and onsite event management.

My main goal is to inspire! I am determined to make a difference in my personal and professional life, and ensure I make the most of any opportunity available to me to network and build long-lasting relationships with an array of individuals in the events industry, absorbing their priceless knowledge and passion for events.

I am passionate about the tourism industry because it is dynamic – a key economic contributor to Australia’s prosperity...

melanie louise crosswellmanager, Tourism Quality, Australian government Department of Resources, energy and Tourism, Bachelor of Business (Hon 1), (Tourism management) graduate (2002)

I manage the Approved Destination Status (ADS) scheme for Australian Inbound Tour Operators and the National Tourism Accreditation Framework (NTAF) also known as T-QUAL Accreditation. This helps the Australian tourism industry to access Australia’s most valuable inbound tourism market – the rapidly growing Chinese leisure tourism market, as well as ensure that tourists can identify and choose high quality tourism experiences, protecting Australia’s reputation as a high-quality and safe destination.

The industry liaison, research and writing skills that I developed during my time at The University of Queensland are all key skills that I have used throughout my career. My degree also allows me to draw upon economic and business frameworks in the analysis of policy issues.

ryan Brown Bachelor of Business management / Bachelor of Laws University of Copenhagen, Denmark

I took business courses whilst studying at Copenhagen Business School and quickly fell in love with the city, the culture and the University itself. I mainly had one interactive lecture a week where students challenged the reasoning of the lecturer, creating a vibrant learning environment. Studying abroad was a magnificent opportunity to further my knowledge and gave an international touch to my degree. If you are thinking of going on a university exchange – get the ball rolling and think no longer. It is one of the best things you can ever do.

lesTer kok Bachelor of Commerce / Bachelor of Laws Bucerius Law School, germany

To say that my exchange to Bucerius Law School in Hamburg, Germany was an incredible experience is an understatement – I truly had the best time of my life and I can almost guarantee that, should you choose Bucerius, you will too! I studied courses on M&A, EU law, corporate governance and international banking. Most of all, the thing that made my experience truly unforgettable was the lifelong friendships I formed with an amazing group of “Internationals”. To experience life in Germany, to share the excitement and challenges of being on exchange, and to learn so much from each other’s life experiences has been one of the greatest pleasures of my life to date. I strongly encourage anyone considering studying abroad to just do it because you will not regret it!

Julia zavaglia Bachelor of engineering / Bachelor of Business management Bocconi University, italy

Don’t miss the opportunity to study at Bocconi in Milan, the university, the country and the culture make it all worth it! Milan is a great city to live in, it may not have the reputation of a big historical city like Rome, but this is what makes it great! Less tourists, easy to get around, hidden treasures and cool local places.

Make sure you sign up for the Italian crash course before you get there, it’s really helpful and you’ll make some great friends. Bocconi is a top rated university in Europe attracting students from all over Europe. The culture of this university is vastly different from UQ, it was great to experience a new learning environment.

feeS AnD COSTS

When you study at University, you pay fees for each course in which you enrol. Most undergraduate places at UQ are funded partly by the Australian Government (Commonwealth supported) and partly by you, and the amount you pay (your student contribution amount) depends on the band level of your course. National priority courses attract the lowest charges.

You are eligible for Commonwealth supported (CSP) funding if you are an Australian or New Zealand citizen, or an Australian permanent resident. International students must pay full tuition fees.

At UQ, fees are charged each enrolment period (e.g., semester or year) according to the courses you undertake, not the program in which you enrol and, because charges will be levied according to your exact enrolment, it is not possible to publish a fixed annual fee for a program.

University of Queensland Unionuqu.uq.edu.au

UQ Student Servicesuq.edu.au/student-services

fee calculatorTo help you estimate your fees for an enrolment period, UQ has developed an online Fee Calculator, available on the Courses and Programs website.

The Fee Calculator shows individual course fees and lets you add them to a list to calculate the overall fee for your enrolment. Before you enrol, Academic Advisors can help you develop a study plan.

uq.edu.au/study (see UQ Toolkit)

living costsAs a university student, you will also need to consider other costs of living, especially if you are living away from home for the first time. These include accommodation, books and study requirements, transport, and parking. Fortunately, a wide range of assistance is available.

UQU, the Student Union, has a secondhand bookshop at St Lucia, and provides many low-cost entertainment activities. UQ’s Student Services offer help with accommodation and finding a job.

The Australian Government provides financial support for low-income earners, as well as fee repayment options for all students.

uq.edu.au/international/expenses-guide

CenTRelink SeRviCeS

The Australian Government’s Centrelink provides three income-support payments for Australian tertiary students: Youth Allowance, Austudy, and Abstudy.

You can apply for these payments at any Centrelink Customer Service Centre. Other schemes include:

• an interest-free advance loan for students, where you are paid part of your allowance as a lump-sum advance

• the Pensioner Education Supplement (PES), which is a payment to certain categories of pensioners commencing study

• the Health Care Card, which enables Commonwealth health concessions, such as low-cost pharmaceuticals, under the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS).

centrelink.gov.au

heCS-helP

If you are a domestic student (see inside back cover) in a Commonwealth supported place, you may be eligible to receive HECS-HELP.

HECS-HELP allows Australian citizens or permanent humanitarian visa holders in Australia to defer all or part of their student contribution amounts for repayment when their income meets a specific threshold. This means that you do not start repaying your HECS debt until you earn above a certain income level (currently $47,195 per tax year). It is then taken out of your pay as additional tax.

At each enrolment period, if you pay “up-front”, i.e. at the time of enrolment, you will receive a 10% discount on your fees. (Please note that New Zealand citizens or Australian permanent residents without a humanitarian visa must pay up-front and do not receive a discount).

ranu oBaha Bachelor of international Hotel and Tourism management, graduate (2009)

I enjoyed my time at UQ and learnt a great deal in the service and hospitality disciplines which I now practice in my role as a manager at Novotel Brisbane Airport. My degree prepared me by having courses that are very relevant to my industry like Service management, F&B Management and Leisure, Meetings and Convention Management. An added benefit was the industry knowledge of the lecturers and tutors and their real world examples. The skills I learnt I now use in drafting new standards and procedures for the company.

To gain admission to undergraduate programs, you must:

• satisfy prerequisites, and

• have a sufficient entry score, i.e. Overall Position (OP) or rank.

If your entry score is not sufficient or you are missing prerequisites, you can apply through alternative entry pathways, visit:

uq.edu.au/study

PrerequisitesSubject prerequisites are the Queensland Year 12 subjects required for individual programs. You may also gain admission to programs with subject equivalents from interstate or overseas schooling, external senior studies, or tertiary studies.

entry scoresEntry scores include Overall Positions (OP) and ranks. Eligible applicants are selected for admission to a program in order of merit based on entry scores. Those with the highest entry score are selected first, and so on until the program quota is filled.

The minimum OP or rank required for entry varies from year to year and is determined once applications have been processed and places allocated. While it is difficult to predict exactly what OP or rank will be needed for entry to a program, the previous year’s cut-off points can be used as a guide.

UQ OP guaranteeIf you achieve an OP1-5 (or IB/rank equivalent), you are guaranteed entry into your highest eligible preference for the majority of UQ’s undergraduate programs, regardless of course cut-offs. For more information and to check if your program is covered by the guarantee, visit:

uq.edu.au/study/futurestudents.html

english language requirementsIf you are from a non-English speaking background, you must provide evidence of English language proficiency. You can do this by passing Queensland Year 12 English (or interstate equivalent), or by other means as outlined in the Entry Options booklet available from UQ Admissions.

uq.edu.au/study

UQ has several special entry programs for supporting and increasing particular groups in tertiary study.

UQ bonus Rank SchemeUQ’s Bonus Rank Scheme gives high-school students bonus points towards their entry score (i.e. OP/rank) for completing certain approved subjects or courses.

People of Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait islander descentIf you are of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent you may be eligible for Alternative Entry for a place at UQ. You will need to supply a letter of Aboriginality and lodge a special application that shows that you are capable of pursuing your preferred area of study. Factors such as prior education, community work, life experience, and academic potential may be taken into consideration in the selection process.

uq.edu.au/atsis

School-leavers who have experienced financial hardshipThe UQ-Link Access program provides equitable access to, and support for, higher education for school-leavers who have experienced educational disadvantage as a result of financial hardship. If approved, you will receive five bonus points towards your entry score and a start-up bursary to assist with study costs. You may also be considered for a UQ-Link Access scholarship. Talk to your school guidance officer if you are interested in this program.

If you are recommended for UQ-Link Access, you must satisfy regular criteria and apply through QTAC for a place at UQ. For more information, contact UQ Admissions.

uq.edu.au/study/uqlink-entry

Special considerationIf you have suffered severe disadvantage that was beyond your control and which has affected previously satisfactory results and you are not eligible for consideration through any of the schemes listed here, you may apply for special consideration through the Special Consideration of Educational Disadvantage process, which is managed by the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC).

2012 frank finn Scholar ms Pei wun han bachelor of Commerce (honours)

Receiving a Frank Finn Scholarship was a great honour. It will also lighten some of the financial pressure for me in what will no doubt be a busy and challenging year ahead.

~ Study at university is much easier when you don’t have to worry about money. Check out what you may be eligible for before you start. ~

damian maher UQ vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship holder and bachelor of economics / bachelor of laws

I wanted to come to UQ because it has one of the best reputations for academic excellence in law and economics in the southern hemisphere.

Receiving this scholarship will allow me to continue my charity work while I study – at Eddie’s Van and a local nursing home – instead of having to find part-time work to support myself.
