Faster computers, smarter sensors and more energy-efficient mobile phones could be a reality now Southampton scientists have secured £5m of funding for advanced nanotechnology research.

High-tech materials underpin a wide range of photonic and electronic devices but how these materials are layered and patterned helps determine the device’s storage, speed and power.

“The drive is always to make technological devices faster, smaller and smarter,” said project leader Phil Bartlett, Professor of Electrochemistry at the University of Southampton.

“Our aim is to develop supercritical fluid electrodeposition (also known as electroplating) techniques that could be used to produce significantly smaller and more complex nanomaterials.

“Electrodeposition of materials into pores with diameters smaller than a few tens of atoms is very difficult, if not impossible, but using supercritical fluids

– halfway between a fluid and a gas – means we could potentially reach pores of less than two nanometers.

“These fluids have extreme penetrating powers and can completely fill a space enabling them to be used for structures far smaller than anything achieved to date,” said Phil.

The five-year project is funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and brings together researchers from the universities of Southampton, Nottingham and Warwick.

Southampton scientists could unlock the key to producing nylon in a more green and sustainable way.

Working with industrial partners, the team is developing a catalyst that can reduce by-products, harmful waste and the cost of making nylon.

Nylon is a polymer used traditionally in the clothing and carpet industries and is produced using a two-step process that converts cyclohexanone and air to caprolactam - a precursor of nylon.

This method uses corrosive reagents such as nitric and sulphuric acid that generate large amounts of by-products such as ammonium sulphate causing environmental concerns and higher costs.

Now Dr Robert Raja, Reader in Chemistry at the University of Southampton, and his team have developed a procedure that can catalyse the two individual steps of the process.

By using a solid of aluminium and phosphorous bridging blocks, with either cobalt or manganese incorporated, the metal centres catalyse the first step of the process producing water as the only by-product. The second step is initiated simultaneously resulting in caprolactam formation.

“This is a one-pot synthesis with a synergistic catalytic approach, that is not only more sustainable but cost-effective too,” said Robert.

Stephanie NewlandMChem in Chemistry with a six-month placementChemistry student Stephanie is celebrating after being awarded one of the prestigious Salters’ Awards for 2012. The awards are presented annually to five chemistry final year undergraduates who the judges feel will ultimately be able to occupy leading positions in the UK chemical and allied industries.

The selection panel from Salters’ Institute of Chemistry was impressed with Stephanie’s knowledge of the issues and challenges facing the chemical industry. “I’m ecstatic to have won,” said Stephanie. “It was a great experience being able to discuss global issues with leading figures in chemistry and to see how we can provide the answers to many of the world’s most pressing problems such as population growth and finding new sources of energy. The award will help me stand out and will give me the chance to meet some very influential and interesting people.”

It is the second year running that a University of Southampton chemistry student has been awarded a Salters’ prize. MChem student Emma Stuart was a recipient last year.

Hugo JungiusMChem in Chemistry with a one year placementHugo got the chance to put his theoretical training into practice during a year-long placement with Chemistry spin out company Ilika, a science-based materials discovery company. “During my time at Ilika I worked on two projects looking at the production of Li ion batteries,” said Hugo. “This was a really positive experience and I learnt a great deal in terms of developing my chemistry and general skills. It was great to be able to translate what I have learnt in my lectures into a proper research environment and I felt it helped train me for the ‘real world’. I want to do my PhD first but afterwards I would really like to work at Ilika. I have already got another work placement there this summer,” he said.

Rebecca DriesenerMChem in Chemistry with a six-month placement; PhD ChemistryRebecca’s placement in an academic lab led to her being published in a renowned international journal as well as forming the basis for her PhD studies in Chemistry.

“It was very exciting to work on a research project in one of Southampton’s academic laboratories. We were working at the interface of chemistry and biology and showed that cyanide can be derived from the amino acid tyrosine in an enzyme dependent manner. Our results paper was published in the journal Angewandte Chemie and I am now working on the same enzyme in the same lab for my PhD,” she said.

1. Professor Andrea RussellProfessor of Physical Electrochemistry

Andrea’s research focuses on developing electrocatalysts for fuel cells, batteries, water electrolysers and other applications. She works in collaboration with UK and global industrial partners and uses national and international facilities such as the UK’s Diamond Light Source and the world-leading ISIS centre. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, a Divisional member of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry, and an Adjunct Professor in Chemical Engineering at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio.

Andrea lectures in physical chemistry in Year 1 and participates in the mathematics workshops.

2. Professor Philip BartlettHead of the Electrochemistry Group

Philip specialises in nanostructured materials, a new class of materials with applications ranging from healthcare to electronics. Philip’s team is developing them to detect single base changes in DNA for applications in point-of-care diagnostics to help prevent adverse drug reactions.

Philip has won many prestigious awards and is a Fellow of the Royal Society, the International Society of Electrochemistry and the Royal Society of Chemistry. He is also the co-founder of Nanotecture, a spin out company of the University that uses nanostructured materials for energy storage.

3. Professor Malcolm LevittHead of Magnetic Resonance

Malcolm specialises in the development of new magnetic resonance techniques and is leading several major projects enhancing NMR spectroscopy and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). He is a Fellow of the Royal Society and has won many prestigious awards including the Laukien prize - the biggest international prize for magnetic resonance. He has researched in the Swiss Nobel prize-winning Ernst laboratory and written a widely-used textbook on magnetic resonance principles called Spin Dynamics.

Malcolm teaches undergraduate courses in quantum mechanics and spectroscopy, and a Year 4 course in magnetic resonance.

4. Dr Ali TavassoliReader in Chemical Biology

Ali is a Reader in Chemical Biology, jointly appointed to Chemistry and Medicine’s Cancer Sciences. His research focuses on the discovery of compounds that inhibit key processes in the development and growth of tumours. His laboratory also works in the emerging field of synthetic biology, reprogramming cellular behaviour through introduction of non-native genes and reconfiguration of protein networks. He has received several awards for his work including a Career Establishment Award from Cancer Research UK, and the European Association for Chemical and Molecular Sciences’ silver medal for European Young Chemist.

5. Dr Bruno LinclauHead of the Molecular Diagnostics and Therapeutics Group

Bruno specialises in synthetic organic chemistry, with a particular aim to developing new synthetic methodology for use in natural product synthesis. A particular focus of his group involves organofluorine chemistry, in which novel applications are developed to improve the properties of bioactive compounds.

He is a member of The Royal Society of Chemistry Fluorine and Carbohydrate committees, and is involved in a number of national and international collaborations.

Research centres and facilitiesWith a reputation for linking fundamental research with real-world applications, Southampton is home to cutting-edge research centres that consistently break new ground.

Our research centres have strong links with business, industry and government. For example, our National Oceanography Centre Southampton provides

large-scale infrastructure and support for the entire UK marine research community while collaborating with the oil, gas and communications industries. We also strive to bring together national and international experts to address critical issues facing society and this is the case in our Institute for Life Sciences where biosciences help tackle issues such as climate change and human health.

Learning environment

All our research centres at Southampton focus on global challenges that really impact on society. Our Optoelectronics Research Centre focuses on photonics research and the centre has played a major role in developing the optical telecommunications technology that underpins the internet.

Other facilities include the Southampton Wind Tunnels for aerodynamics testing, yacht and sail design and the University’s supercomputer, one of the most powerful university-owned supercomputers in the UK.

We also have our own flight simulator; the Southampton Flight Simulator is unique in the UK, developed by students, for students. It is a state-of-the-art facility and first year undergraduates can learn to fly from take-off through to landing, putting theory from lectures into practice.

LibrariesOur facilities are among the best in the country. The Hartley Library on the Highfield Campus is one of the leading research libraries in the UK. Facilities include a state-of-the-art learning centre, with consultation rooms, ‘walk in’ internet access, a language study area with computers linked to software for a range of languages, a café and a study lounge.

The Hartley Library houses specialist collections including the Broadland Archives, the papers of the Duke of Wellington, world renowned collections relating to Jewish history and culture, and the Ford Collection of British Official Parliamentary Publications.

Excellent chemistry facilitiesAt Southampton we have some of the best chemistry facilities in the UK.

We are proud to be home to the national EPSRC X-Ray Crystallogaphy Service that uses cutting-edge techniques to provide data collection and crystal structure analysis for the UK chemistry community.

Our Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) facility offers a fast and comprehensive analytical service that investigates the three-dimensional structure of a molecule, and our X-Ray Diffraction Centre enables the structural study of a wide range of samples from single crystals to powders.

We run a unique four-week Summer School that brings work experience from leading industry, such as GlaxoSmithKline, Eli Lilly and Pfizer, into the University. We also organise special seminars inviting industrialists to come and talk about key aspects of today’s workplace.

Our Master of Chemistry undergraduate placement scheme is a huge success with students hosted by more than 80 organisations in 15 different countries over the last five years.

Campuses

Our main Highfield Campus, in the north of Southampton, is home to the Students’ Union, the Jubilee Sports Centre, the Hartley Library, a 330-seat Uniplex cinema and three leading arts venues: The Nuffield Theatre, the Turner Sims concert hall and the John Hansard Gallery.

A few minutes’ walk from Highfield is Avenue Campus, which houses most disciplines within Humanities, and the Centre for Language Study. It has a library, lecture theatres, focused study spaces and catering amenities.

Three miles west of Highfield is Southampton General Hospital, one of the country’s leading teaching hospitals and the base for Medicine. The campus offers modern laboratories, computer suites, refurbished lecture theatres, catering facilities and a specialist health services library.

Located on the city’s waterfront, the National Oceanography Centre Southampton is one of the world’s leading research centres for the study of ocean and Earth sciences. The campus has its own fitness suite, sports hall and catering facilities.

Winchester School of Art is located 12 miles north of Southampton, in Winchester city centre. The campus provides purpose designed studios and workshops, an extensive specialist library, Students’ Union facilities, a café and a well-stocked art supplies shop.

Our branch campus for engineering is in EduCity, Iskandar in Malaysia and benefits from innovative world-class facilities for engineering and full access to the learning resources at our UK campuses. It offers undergraduate students the opportunity to study in a safe international environment.

Social life

As an undergraduate student you will automatically become a member of Southampton University’s Students’ Union (SUSU), one of the largest in the UK.

The Students’ Union provides a range of places to eat great food, hear top bands, see the latest films and get information and advice. The Jubilee Sports Centre houses a 25m swimming pool, badminton and squash courts and a fitness studio. Our outdoor facilities include eight tennis courts, two floodlit synthetic turf pitches and a number of grass pitches.

We also offer a wide range of water sports to cater for everyone, from beginners to elite athletes.

You can also take part in a whole host of clubs and societies, from snowboarding and mountain biking to photography and philosophy. Whatever your interests, SUSU organises a diverse range of events and activities to keep you entertained. Our societies range from the cultural and course-related, to the international, sporting and political.

Accommodation

With 20 halls of residence and first-class facilities it’s no wonder our accommodation is so popular. We have more than 5,000 places in 20 halls that provide a wide range of living arrangements that all offer excellent value for money. Our halls vary in size, character and facilities, but they all provide the same high-quality accommodation in a safe, diverse, inclusive environment. We have accommodation specifically for undergraduates, from standard packages to self-catered studio flats. We also have a limited number of properties suitable for couples and families.

If you are a UK or EU student, we welcome your application for a place in halls, which we allocate subject to availability. If we are unable to offer you a place in halls, we can give you help and advice on securing private rented accommodation.

International Students

If you are a full-time registered international undergraduate student, you are guaranteed an offer in halls for your first year of study, provided that you are unaccompanied, live outside Southampton and we receive your accommodation application by the advertised deadline.

Southampton and regionSouthampton is a thriving modern city, steeped in history and culture. Just over an hour south of London, Southampton has excellent transport links with the rest of the UK.

A lively cityClose to the city centre, the University forms an integral part of this dynamic, multicultural city. Our location offers a vibrant mix of recreation, culture and entertainment – from restaurants, cafés, bars and nightclubs to cinemas, sports facilities, internationally acclaimed arts venues and one of the south of England’s top shopping centres. The University is next to Southampton Common, a protected Site of Special Scientific Interest with extensive areas of public open space and managed woodland.

Whether you fancy a lunch with friends or dancing into the small hours, Southampton has the right venue. From intimate lounge bars and roof terraces to Leisure World, which houses a casino, bowling alley, several restaurants and bars, a 13-screen cinema and two nightclubs, there is something for everyone. Historic Oxford Street is home to Southampton’s finest restaurants, but wherever you are in the city you will be spoiled for choice, with restaurants offering a wide variety of cuisines from across the

globe and catering for every budget. In the city centre you will also find West Quay, one of the south coast’s top shopping centres. Whatever your musical tastes there are great venues in Southampton for live music. The Joiners, for example, is known for up-and-coming bands – Coldplay, Oasis and Radiohead all played there before they were famous. The Guildhall is a multi-purpose venue that stages jazz and rock as well as a range of contemporary and classical music.

A connected cityJust over an hour from central London, Southampton has excellent transport links with the rest of the UK and internationally, by road, rail, sea and air. The city is serviced by two mainline train stations, with direct trains to London Waterloo and within easy reach of the Eurostar at St Pancras International. Southampton Airport offers regular flights to UK and major European destinations. Our own award-winning uni-link bus service connects all Southampton campuses and halls of residence, the city centre, the airport and both railway stations.

Less than half an hour from Southampton is the New Forest National Park, with vast open heathland and beautiful forest. The resorts of Bournemouth and Poole are just down the coast, while a short ferry ride

takes you to the Isle of Wight, which hosts Skandia Cowes Week, the largest and most prestigious international sailing regatta in the world.

A historic citySouthampton has a fascinating history. It was from here in 1415 that Henry V set sail for Agincourt. The Pilgrim Fathers first set sail from here in 1620 on their historic journey to the New World, and the ill-fated Titanic sailed from Southampton in 1912.

Southampton has a rich aviation heritage, with the Spitfire, the fighter aircraft that won the Battle of Britain, developed in the region in the 1930s. As well as an area of outstanding natural beauty, the New Forest has a fascinating history. Created in 1079 by William the Conqueror as an area for hunting deer, it became an important source of timber for the Royal Navy. Today the forest retains many historical rural practices, such as pasturing of ponies, cattle, pigs and donkeys in the open forest by local inhabitants, known historically as the ‘commoners’.

A modern cityToday, Southampton has one of the biggest commercial ports in Europe, and the city is known across the world as the home of the giant cruise liners, Queen Mary 2 and Queen Victoria.

Southampton’s thriving port handles in excess of 42 million tonnes of cargo annually. It is the cruise industry capital of northern Europe and is engaged in sustained and continued city centre development that continually strives to improve its already enviable facilities.

Its coastal location means that Southampton offers a vast range of opportunities for sport and leisure, with waterfront marinas and a major focus on water sports, sailing and ocean racing. The city hosts the largest on-water boat show in Europe – the annual Southampton Boat Show.

WinchesterThe historic city of Winchester – England’s ancient capital – is just 12 miles north of Southampton, and is home to the University’s internationally renowned Winchester School of Art. Popular for its bustling shopping streets and spectacular architecture, Winchester is perhaps best known for its 11th century cathedral and the Great Hall, which houses the mysterious Round Table of King Arthur. The city’s rich cultural heritage is complemented by a lively atmosphere and a wide variety of pubs and restaurants, museums, theatres and galleries.

Course overview

Course structureAt Southampton we offer a range of bachelors and masters degree programmes that will give you a good grounding in the essentials of chemistry. You will study in a supportive and exciting learning community, led by academics who are pioneering innovative ways to teach.

Whether you choose a Bachelor of Science or a Master of Chemistry degree your course structure will be broadly the same.

Each year is divided into two 12-week teaching semesters and, as well as developing your core knowledge of the subject, you will also learn a wide variety of transferable skills. You will study a mixture of compulsory and optional modules.

How will you learn?We aim to develop your understanding in an inspiring and rewarding way by encouraging a close working relationship between you and your tutor. Our excellent academics are committed to sharing their knowledge and experience and introducing you to new, rapidly developing areas such as nanostructured materials and synthetic biology.

We deliver our courses through a variety of different teaching methods and assessment styles such as interactive lectures, practical work in laboratories, workshops, tutorials and e-learning.

You will have an examination at the end of each semester and will also be assessed on your coursework. In most cases you will also be required to do a dissertation and an oral examination.

LecturesWe aim to make our lectures as interactive as possible. You will take part in discussions, question and answer sessions, informal quizzes and more conventional-style seminars. In most lectures you will get handouts summarising key points to help you structure your note-taking.

Workshops and tutorialsOur workshops will help convert your knowledge to understanding. Working with a small group of peers you will explore problems and link to material you have covered in your lectures.

You will learn from each other and gain confidence in your own abilities by attending regular tutorials with your tutor and six to eight of your fellow students. Before your tutorial you will be set a problem to work on and you will submit your work for assessment.

Laboratory workYou will spend up to six hours a week carrying out practical work in our laboratories. You will develop your laboratory techniques as well as illustrating the theoretical concepts you have covered in your lectures. These sessions are hard work but very sociable and allow you to obtain your own results and generate supporting laboratory reports.

E-learningYou will be supported in your degree programme by our virtual learning environment – Blackboard - where lecture notes, handouts, presentations and alternative teaching methods such as videos and self-assessment tests are posted. This virtual way of studying gives you more control over your own learning and encourages your private study.

The Science Foundation Year is the first year of a four or five-year degree in Chemistry, Biological Sciences, Ocean and Earth Sciences or Environmental Science. The programme has been specifically designed to provide both UK and international students, who have not taken UK A levels (or an equivalent qualification) in science subjects, with the best possible grounding for our undergraduate degree programmes.

“I think that the University of Southampton is one of the best institutions to offer high standards of education in chemistry. I enjoy the fact that every lecturer is craving to help you! In workshops, you have help to solve any questions you may have. ‘Parents’, who are older students from other year groups, are also willing to assist you in every aspect. From lab technicians to PhD students, the common passion for chemistry makes it feel like you are at home.

Chemistry runs conferences and seminars regularly to update you with cutting-edge knowledge. I recently had the chance to meet and ask questions to a professor from the Institute of Cancer Research about a current cancer drug - nothing can be more leading-edge than this!

There are opportunities to travel to develop your knowledge and gain more skills, and I am planning to volunteer in an analytical lab-based company in South Africa. I have also attended a conference in Germany to learn about the advances and controversies in B-vitamins and choline.

Being in a lab is definitely the most exciting part of chemistry, and I am getting more and more confident with my practical skills. To carry out experiments and be able to write reports makes you feel like you are becoming a real chemist.

All students should apply between 1 September 2013 and 15 January 2014. if you are an international student from outside the UK or eU, we may consider your application up until 30 June 2014. however, we cannot guarantee there will be vacancies on our courses after the January deadline.

In September each year, we arrange an International and EU Welcome programme, which helps you settle into life here. The programme includes general events to introduce you to our facilities, subject-specific events to begin your academic induction and a range of social and cultural activities.

During the programme, you will meet other undergraduate students and explore the University and the city, so that you know where to worship, relax and shop. You will also meet current international students who will be able to give you good advice.

By railFast trains from London and Bournemouth/Weymouth stop at Winchester, Southampton Central and Southampton Airport Parkway.
