As early as 1824, classes in pharmaceutical chemistrywere being conducted in Manchester’s School ofMedicine by John Dalton (of Dalton’s Atomic Theory).The first lecturer in pharmacy was appointed in 1883,and Manchester was the first British university tooffer degrees in pharmacy, in 1904.

Over the years, our School has grown substantially, to now include: 41 full-time members of staff (plus24 teaching practitioners, or external clinical tutors);670 undergraduates studying for a four-year MPharmdegree; 80 postgraduate research students studyingfor a higher (mostly PhD) degree; and 25 researchstaff. Our growth in size has been more thanmatched by a growth in stature.

Today, our School incorporates the national Centrefor Pharmacy Postgraduate Education (CPPE), whichprovides postgraduate training for England’s 17,000community pharmacists, and Pharmaceutical IndustryAdvanced Training (PIAT), which provides continuingeducation programmes for the British and Europeanpharmaceutical industry.

Our MPharm programme was successfullyreaccredited by the GPhC Accreditation Panel in 2010.

Reputation for qualityResearch

In the most recent Research Assessment Exercise(2008), which ranks the quality of research in all UKuniversities, 95% of our research was classed as‘internationally significant’, and 70% rated as ‘worldleading’ or ‘internationally excellent’. This top-levelresearch informs and enhances all of our courses.

Teaching

We enhance students’ learning by exposing them toteacher-practitioners and clinical lecturers fromcommunity and hospital pharmacy.

The Quality Assurance Agency reviews quality by conducting institutional-level reviews, andManchester was last reviewed in April 2011 – successfully.

Our Manchester Pharmacy School also underwent aninternal quality review in 2010, which identified thefollowing strengths:

• A dedicated team who perform to the best of their ability for their students

• Recent introduction of a successful foundationcourse at Xaverian College

• Actively involved in initiatives such as wideningparticipation, Pharmacy in Primary Schools (PIPS)and Fastbleep Pharmacy

Students' knowledge is assessed by a variety ofmethods, including practical reports andexaminations, group work, peer assessment, oralpresentations and end-of-semester examinations.Report-writing skills are assessed throughout thecourse, and practical skills are continuously assessedduring practical classes. The final degree mark isbased on the results of first, second, third and fourth-year examinations and the fourth-year project.

Excellent study resources and facilities

Our School is based in the Stopford Building, where the University invested £18 million into new,state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities.Specialised aseptic laboratories and communicationstudios were built, along with a new dispensing suiteand project laboratories.

Through the Pharmacy Computer Assisted Learning(PCAL) Consortium, you can access all PCAL andPharma-CAL-ogy software packages by anynetworked machines across campus. You have freeaccess to the programs during personal study times.Further public computer clusters offer similar servicesin Manchester Computing and Owens Parkresidences, which are supported seven days a week.

Our University Library is one of the best-resourcedacademic libraries in the country, with more than fourmillion printed books and manuscripts, 41,000electronic journals and 50,000 electronic books. Youhave open access to around 400 networked libraryPCs, providing email, internet, CAL software, onlinedetailed library stocks/book locations and web linksfor data-searching.

This course provides you with a broad-based,scientifically and clinically strong education inpharmacy, which will enable you to both enterall areas of the profession on graduation andadapt to changes that may occur during yourprofessional life.

The basic core material extends through all four years of the course, but you have the opportunity tospecialise in certain subjects in your fourth year.

By the end of the course, you will be conversant withthe professional aspects of pharmacy, able tocommunicate effectively and able to appreciate theprofessional and social role of the pharmacist. Theseprofessional aspects will be developed further duringyour pre-registration year.

Course structureThe MPharm course is full-time and is organised on a modular basis under four main themes: theMedicine, the Patient, the Pharmacist and the Public.Most course units are compulsory, but you may select units in your final year in order to suit yourcareer aspirations.

In first year you are taught within the ManchesterPharmacy School, whilst in Years 2, 3 and 4 you haveregular half-day visits to local hospitals, where clinicalsessions are held.

In Year 4, you take the core subjects and select from Medicine’s options, as well as selecting aresearch project.

Teaching, learning and assessmentYou will learn via a wide variety of teaching andlearning activities throughout the course, includinglectures, tutorials, practical classes, enquiry, problemand team-based learning sessions, computer-assistedlearning, group work and research projects.

Your knowledge is mainly assessed in end-of-semester examinations by essay-type questions, shortanswers, multiple-choice questions and computer-based assessment. Other forms of assessment includeoral and poster presentations, report-writing skillsthrough a project, and practical skills by continuousassessment of practical classes and practicalexaminations.

Your final degree mark is based on the results of Years 1, 2, 3 and 4 examinations and the Year 4 project.

Year 1 (Semesters 1 and 2)THE MEDICINE: Introduction to Medicines

Introduces you to pharmaceutics and the formulationof drugs. You will develop:

• a good understanding of the pharmaceuticalchemistry of low MW drugs

• problem-solving, pharmaceutical calculation, dataanalysis and practical skills

• self-learning skills with an individual drug portfolioon a clinically important medicine

• team-work and communication skills via anenquiry-based learning exercise on the treatmentof a therapeutic area.

THE PHARMACIST: Introduction to Pharmacy Practice

Introduces you to the use of reference sources,prescriptions, communication skills and products fromthe pharmacist perspective. You will:

• learn the theory of prescriptions, communications skills, and products (formulation and administration)

• test the theory in practical classes, then proceed onto the application in tutorial classes via case studiesand role plays.

THE PATIENT: Introduction to Human Biology

Focuses on knowledge regarding the structure andfunction of the human body, including:

• elementary physiology of the major systems of the human body

• cell biology and biochemical aspects of human biology

• introductory human genetics

• an introduction to metabolism and drug targets

• multicellular aspects of the functioning of thehuman body.

THE PUBLIC

• Part 1: a two-week induction to the MPharmcourse, which covers academic and supportaspects, provides opportunities to engage withprofessional groups, and promotes a safety-conscious approach to lab work. The orientation to the profession provides an introduction to thetypes of clinical decision-making encountered bythe pharmacist, and how these decisions areinformed by the integration of science, practiceand ethics.

• Parts 2 and 3: introduce the various ways by whichpharmacists can best improve the overall health ofthe population, including prevention and controlof infectious diseases, as well as those caused by lifestyle.

Year 2 (Semesters 3 and 4)THE MEDICINE: Drug Development Process 1

Provides knowledge on the steps of the drugdevelopment process: roles played by medicinalchemistry, pharmaceutical analysis, medicine designand quality assurance to turn a discovery lead into amedicine. You gain:

• hands-on experience with dosage design,manufacture and testing drug release

• analytical, problem-solving and data-analysis skillsfor verifying reliability of measurements

• decision-making and team-working skills by carrying out a case study based on pre-formulation data.

THE PHARMACIST: Law and Dispensing

Provides you with the foundations you need for thepractice of pharmacy, including:

• knowledge of the legal framework, processes andprocedures relevant to pharmacy and the skillsunderpinning the practice of pharmacy, particularlycore dispensing

• knowledge of specialist dispensing: namely, asepticand radio pharmacy.

THE PATIENT: Pathology, Pharmacology andTherapeutics 1

Provides a systems-based approach (respiratory,cardiovascular, renal, gastrointestinal) for humanphysiology, pathology, pharmacology (pertinent todrug targets within these systems) and therapeutics(clinical interventions appropriate for diseasetreatment) with emphasis on integration acrosssubject areas. You will gain:

• experience of non-invasive clinical procedures(ECG, blood pressure, pulse) and learn toappreciate the pharmacological actions ofcardiovascular drugs, via laboratory classes

• first-hand interaction with patients (assessing casehistories, evaluating current medication), viaclinical hospital tutorials.

THE PUBLIC: Microbiology and Chemotherapy

Introduces you to infectious diseases, infection prophylaxis by vaccination, andchemotherapy, including:

• concepts and examples relevant to practicingpharmacists, together with an understanding ofthe biological principles underlying practice

• microbiology – introduction to common infectiousdiseases, mechanisms by which they spread inpopulations, the immune response to infectionsand how this can be utilised for prophylaxis by immunisation

• chemotherapy – use of antimicrobials to preventand treat microbial infections.

Year 3 (Semesters 5 and 6)THE MEDICINE: Drug Development Process 2

Provides you with an understanding ofpharmacokinetics of small molecules. You will learn to:

• demonstrate application of scientific principles in the development of drug formulations

• integrate knowledge of disease states, routes of administration and pharmacokinetics

• study alone through an assessed portfolio of case studies

• work effectively within a team and develop communication skills throughpharmacokinetics simulation tutorials and drugdevelopment workshops.

THE PHARMACIST: Communication, CommunityPharmacy Practice and Introduction to DrugDisposition and Metabolism

Develops your communication skills with particularreference to advising patients how to treat minorailments using over-the-counter medicines. The unit:

• introduces concepts of drug disposition andmetabolism, and provides opportunities for you toexplain how these issues could be dealt with inpractical situations

• allows you to develop problem-solving skills withregard to responding to patients' symptoms anddrug disposition and metabolism case studies.

THE PATIENT: Pathology, Pharmacology andTherapeutics 2

Develops your core knowledge of systems-based(immunology, endocrinology and neurology)physiology and fundamental anatomy. Lectures aresupported by practical classes delivered inlaboratories and the clinical setting. You gain:

• a sound pharmacological basis to the action ofdrugs on targets

• a developed understanding of the basic principlesof common disease processes and the principles ofrational drug therapy.

RESEARCH SKILLS

• Provides you with the necessary research skills toundertake a research project in pharmaceuticalsciences or pharmacy practice in Year 4.

• Develops your transferable skills for report writing,use of library resources and database searching,and critically appraising research literature .

Manchester Leadership Programme (MLP)

You will learn the importance of leadership thatpromotes social, economic and environmentalsustainability, gain an insight into key issues facing21st century societies, and develop team-working,project management and presentation skills. The MLPincludes both a taught course unit and volunteeringexperience. As a Pharmacy student, you will have apublic health focus in your volunteer experience.

THE PHARMACIST: Social Pharmacy

An introduction to the sociological issues of relevanceto the practice of pharmacy. You will learn:

• socio-demographic characteristics of the pharmacyworkforce and their roles and responsibilities

• professional and policy issues that impact on theiremployment behaviour

• ethics and professional behaviour and theirapplication to the practice of pharmacy

• different pharmacy practice research methods and their strengths and weaknesses

• pharmacy management.

THE PATIENT: Pharmaceutical Care

Develops your core knowledge and problem-solvingskills relating to patient safety, prescribing andpharmaceutical care. The lectures are supported by anumber of practical classes delivered in bothlaboratories and the clinical setting.

This integrated unit covers evidence-based practice,health economics, prescribing, patient safety andpharmaceutical care.

Career opportunities

Once qualified, a pharmacist has a wide choice of career options:

Community pharmacy

Community pharmacists, working from high street, local and rural pharmacies, use their detailedknowledge to ensure that the medicines ordered onthe doctors’ prescriptions, or bought over thecounter, are correctly and safely supplied, withappropriate patient counselling on use, adverse side-effects, etc.

They also act as readily accessible health advisors tothe general public.

Hospital pharmacy

Hospital pharmacists work directly with doctors,nurses and other health professionals to ensure thatboth inpatients and outpatients receive the mostappropriate medicines and that those medicines areused in the most effective way. The purchase,storage, manufacture, quality testing and distributionof medicines in NHS hospitals are also primarily theresponsibility of the pharmacy department.

Industrial pharmacy

The pharmacist plays a vital role in all of the activitiesof the pharmaceutical industry, from research totechnical and medical information, from productdevelopment to production.

Research

It is the research carried out in the laboratories of thepharmaceutical industry, research institutes, schoolsof pharmacy and in hospitals that pushes thefrontiers of knowledge and provides a basis forfurther progress in the development of medicines and their use.

Access to HE DiplomaOverall, 60 credits are required with 45 at Level 3:minimum of 15 credits in Chemistry with a distinctiongrade; minimum of 15 credits in Mathematics orBiology with a distinction grade and remaining 15credits at a distinction grade. You should also have agood set of GCSEs (minimum 5) with EnglishLanguage and Mathematics at grade B. Applicantseducated up to GCSE level who have only taken aone-year Access course will not normally beaccepted. All UCAS applicants who are beingconsidered for entry will be invited to attendcomputerised skills tests at our School, followed by a formal interview.

Access or foundation coursesAs standards between various access and foundationcourses differ, our School has no generic entryrequirement for applicants who have taken suchcourses. However, you must be studying to theequivalent of GCE A-level standard. Studentseducated up to GCSE level, who have only taken aone-year access or foundation course, will not beaccepted. All UCAS applicants who are beingconsidered for entry will be invited to attendcomputerised skills tests at our School, followed by aformal interview.

Pharmacy student fitness to practiseIn order to be eligible to qualify as a pharmacist,students must meet the fitness-to-practiserequirements of the pharmacy regulator, the GeneralPharmaceutical Council (GPhC).

Code of conduct for pharmacy studentsBelonging to a profession carries privileges andresponsibilities. This means you must conductyourself professionally at all times whilst a pharmacystudent. As such, the School has adopted acommunication and dress code and the GPhC has a code of conduct for pharmacy students that youwill be expected to abide by. Full details can be found within the undergraduate section of theSchool website.

Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) criminalrecords checkIn addition to completing the disclosure of criminalconvictions section on your UCAS form, you will berequired to make a criminal record’s declaration aspart of the application process and a DBS check isundertaken in the first year of the MPharm course.The School will assist you in the completion of theseforms. These are requirements of the GPhC and allstudents must complete them. You should be awarethat your fitness to practise before or during yourperiod of study as a student may impair youreligibility to undertake clinical placements as part ofthe MPharm course, to enter pharmacist pre-registration training or to register as a pharmacist.The School considers each student on a case-by-casebasis and has its own fitness-to-practise procedures inplace to deal with students who have previousconvictions, cautions or reprimands. Health assessmentAll students must pass a health screening with theUniversity’s Student Occupational Health Service priorto entry to ensure they are fit to practise. This will bein the form of a pre-acceptance health questionnaire,which the School will send to students once theyhave firmly or provisionally accepted a place on theMPharm course.

Professional accreditationThe GPhC, the pharmacy regulator, providesprofessional accreditation.

THE FOUNDATION YEAR

Foundation Year (1yr + 4yr MPharm)UCAS Code B231

One-year, full-time (as part of a five-year integrateddegree course leading to MPharm).

The foundation year is the ‘Year 0’ component of theundergraduate MPharm course, designed to providean excellent opportunity for you to adapt to thehigher education system and prepare you for entry to our Pharmacy degree.

Students are accepted from a wide range ofeducational backgrounds and each application will be considered individually.

The foundation year is designed to cater principallyfor two groups:

1. Priority will be given to students who haveobtained A-level (or equivalent) in appropriatesubjects for direct admission to the MPharm course(ie, Chemistry, either Mathematics or Biology), butwho have experienced educational and otherdisadvantage, measured geo-demographically andby prior educational context. We will look at yourjourney through education and examine factorssuch as the performance of your school or college,an Index of Multiple Deprivation, whether yourparents have experienced higher education, orwhether you have been in local authority care.

2. Students will also be considered who haveobtained A-levels (or equivalent) at standard entrygrades (AAA-ABB), but in subjects inappropriatefor direct admission to the MPharm course. �Aminimum of Grade B in GCSE English Languageand Mathematics (or equivalent) will also berequired. Following successful completion of the foundation year, you have a guaranteed place on the first year of the MPharmundergraduate course.

Course structure

Course units in Chemistry and Biology, both of whichfeature Mathematics, and a specific unit on theOrientation to Pharmacy, provide appropriate learningopportunities for students from diverse backgrounds.

Most of the foundation year is taught at XaverianCollege, which is a short walk from our maincampus. A complementary programme of tutorialsand laboratory classes are run in our School ofPharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences on campus.Throughout the year, you are registered with TheUniversity of Manchester, with access to all ourfacilities and support systems.

Teaching and learning

Teaching runs from the middle of September to theend of June, a total of 34 weeks, including six weeksfor revision and examinations. This is four weekslonger than the standard University year, to maximiseyour preparation for degree-level study.

Regular laboratory work reinforces some of thesubject material and helps you develop practical skills.Study skills development and help with the corecontent are provided through fortnightly tutorials.

In addition to academic tutorial support, you willhave a personal tutor for pastoral support, who willbe available for one-to-one meetings and willbecome well known to you. Our School’s foundationteam will provide additional academic support andadditional pastoral support will be available from the counselling services at both Xaverian College and the University.

Coursework and assessment

You are assessed by formal examinations (80%) inJanuary and June and coursework and teststhroughout the year. The coursework assessment in Biology and Chemistry will be mainly based on laboratory work.

Career opportunities

Upon successful completion of the MPharm degree,you are recognised by the GPhC as entitled to register as a pharmacist after completing one year of pre-registration (professional) training.

Pharmacists are the profession legally responsible forthe supply of medicines. Our pharmacy course has abroad, interdisciplinary scientific and clinical base andis flexible enough to meet differing career aspirations,whether in community (high street, local and rural)pharmacies, GPs surgeries, hospitals, industry,government, or universities.

Entry requirementsA-levelStudents who have taken Chemistry, eitherMathematics or Biology and one further subject at A-level, but did not achieve ABB or above, will onlybe considered on the foundation year if there isindependent evidence that they haveunderperformed due to circumstances beyond theircontrol, as measured by contextual data. Under suchcircumstances, we would normally look for A-levelscores of DDC-BCC (or equivalent) in sciencesubjects. It is expected that students should normallybe expected to achieve A-level grades greater thantheir school mean.

Students are accepted from a wide range ofeducational backgrounds and each applicant will beconsidered individually.

If you have already obtained A-levels (or equivalent)in subjects inappropriate for direct admission to theMPharm degree (ABB-AAA), a minimum of Grade Bin GCSE English Language and Mathematics will alsobe required.
