PREFACE
In 2017, Burdur Mehmet Akif Ersoy University ELT Seniors prepared the book
Supplementary English Activities for Students of Grade 8. Working in groups of 6 to 7,
seniors (2017) have designed the supplementary activities based on the units of the
coursebook UPTURN in English 8. As the seniors were very positive towards designing
activities, we also decided to design supplementary activities for secondary school
students. In 2018, working in groups, seniors (2018) designed the supplementary
activities based on the units of the coursebook Ortaokul İngilizce 5 Ders Kitabı [Middle
School English 5 Coursebook] by Yalçın, Genç, Orhon, and Şahin (2017), which was
written for fifth graders at middle schools in Turkey. The PDF versions of these books
together with the audio files created by seniors are available at
http://kilickaya.scienceontheweb.net/documents/english_activities.html.
Different from what we did together with the pre-service language teachers and my
colleagues-to-be in previous years, this year in 2019, we have decided to keep this
activity as an option and introduced some slight changes in the course policy. The
students enrolled in the Language Testing and Evaluation Course offered at the
Department of Foreign Language Education, Burdur Mehmet Akif Ersoy University
were asked to create mock exams or similar multiple-choice questions that 8th graders
would likely to encounter in the ‘High School Entrance Exam’, whose results are used to
place students into specific high schools in Turkey. Each group was asked to choose a
different unit and prepare ten (10) multiple-choice questions based on the objectives,
the English curriculum, and the textbook (Upswing English) used at secondary schools
in Turkey. This ebook includes these multiple-choice questions written by these
students.
Considering the work they have done among many other assignments, presentations,
and responsibilities, I believe that my students, who have already become my
colleagues, deserve special recognition and the right to feel proud of themselves. I wish
them every success and happiness in their future life and career.
