A piece of writing without any punctuation would be as confusing (and as dangerous) as a

gift package to make the passage easier to read and understand.

Passage:

did you hear the good news alice called to her friend my sister emma is going to marry edward they are already engaged i am really looking forward to their wedding day peter and his parents are taking me down to durban because my mother and father will already be there i am so excited wouldnt you be too if it were your sister

5. Making new words

Have you ever watched your mother in the kitchen? She often mixes two or more things

cake!).

You can do the same thing with words.

85

If you add the word parts un- and dis- to the beginning of some words, you can form a new word opposite in meaning.Example: un + do = undo (loosen)

dis + honest = dishonest.

Now let’s make a list on the writing board to see how many words you can think of that are made like this.

Here are a few: un + tie, lock, fold, fasten, button, cork. dis + cover, agree, appear, connect.

You can also add -er to the ends of words for the person who can and -ful for full of.Note: When you add full to a word it drops one “l” e.g. wonder + full = wonderfulbeauty + full = beautiful.

Example: run + er = runner (person who can run) hope + ful = hopeful

Here are some words to use this way:bank, paint, sell, buy, wait + -erwonder, thank, cheer, grate, care + ful

Other word parts we can use in the same way are:-less, -ous, -ish.How many words can you think of that are formed this way?

6. Can you remember your Parts of Speech? Let’s look at them again

Verbs A verb, a verb is a doing word A verb, a verb tells us what to do. A verb, a verb is a doing word A verb, a verb tells us what to do.

He made all the preparations himself and his sister also helped him.

Comprehension exercise

Baptism

Just before Jesus went up to heaven He told his disciples to go and tell everybody about Him. He also said that they should baptize all who believe in Him.

There are three special things that the minister of a church must do: He must preach God’s Word, telling people about Jesus; he must baptize the covenant’s children and he must serve the Lord’s Supper.

Baptism helps us because it is a sign. It shows us that Jesus cleans our hearts. We use water to wash our faces and our hands, we bathe our bodies in water - we need the blood of Jesus to make our hearts clean. When the minister baptizes someone in water, it is a sign to show us that Jesus washes our hearts. Baptism says: Just as water makes our bodies clean, so Jesus’ blood will make your heart clean if you believe in Him.

Baptism is a sign that God makes us new creatures. The Bible says that when we are baptized, we are buried with Jesus and we rise with Him to a new life. When we believe in Jesus, the Holy Spirit makes us new; He gives us new hearts that love God and want to do His will.Do you remember the story of Philip and the man who rode in a chariot? As soon as the man believed in Jesus he wanted to be baptized and then he went on his way happy, because he was sure that he belonged to Jesus.

There is a story in the Bible about a man who was baptized in the middle of the night. The

told him to keep them locked up tight, so he put Paul and Silas in the worst part of the jail. That night he was frightened by a terrible earthquake and asked Paul what he should do to be saved. Paul said “Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ.” The jailor did believe and Paul baptized him together with the rest of his family.

God the Father, God the Son and the Holy Spirit work together to prepare us for heaven. That is why the minister says, “I baptize you in the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost.”

Nativity song

How far is it to Bethlehem? Not very far.

Lit by a star?

Can we see the little Child,Is He within? If we lift the wooden latchMay we go in?

May we stroke the creatures there,Ox, donkey or sheep?May we peep like them and seeJesus asleep?

If we touch His tiny handWill He awake? Will He know we’ve come so farJust for His sake?

Great Kings have precious gifts,And we have naught,Little smiles and little tearsAre all we brought.

For all weary childrenMary must weep. Here on His bed of straw,Sleep, children, sleep.

God in His mother’s arms,Babes in the byre,

Their hearts’ desire.

Frances Chesterton

Star Bright, Star Bright

When Joseph and Mary reached Bethlehem,No lodging at all could be found for them,Until poor Joseph, quite ill with despair,Found an inn, and the owner thereSuggested the stable where the beasts were fedAnd sweet-smelling hay to make a bed.

“Look,” said Mary, “that Star so bright!I feel that my Son will be born tonight.”And when later the Babe in a manger she laid,The ox and donkey were undismayed.

The shepherds of the Birth were told,For, as they watched the star on high,

“Be not afraid,” they said, “we bringTidings of a Heavenly King,That star will guide you straight to them,Who watch by the manger in Bethlehem.”

The simple shepherds at once obeyed, Though each in his heart was much afraid. That star in the East sent down a beamOn three wise men, who followed their dream,Till at last they entered the stable-doorAnd with the shepherds they knelt to adore.

All stared at the costly gifts they brought.(“oh that I had a gift,” each thought.)

Incense and gold, as bright as the sun,They joyously gave to the little One,

All knelt around His crib to pray.

And it matters not if a gift be smallOr if there be no gift at all.For still today in heaven aboveThe greatest gift is the gift of God.
