You will be in groups of 4-6 Go around in your groups and share

your quote. Explain WHY you chose that quote and

what it means to you

When we’re finished, some of you will share with the whole class.

Syllabus:

You will have journals due every month. How many journal entries should you have?

About how long should each journal entry be? Will Ms. Stitt read your journal entries? How many outside reading books do you

have to do? What will be required of you after reading the

outside book? Now follow along for the rest of the syllabus…

Writing Norms:

Every time you write there are a few things you MUST do and that I will be expecting in each paper… here is a short list:

1) INDENT each paragraph! 2) DO NOT use questions ever, even in your grabber/hook3) Always introduce quotes with the speaker and the

context.1) BAD: For example, it says in the book, “Kindness is the only

strength there is…” 2) BETTER: Fr. Greg, when speaking of the homie Luis, shows

Luis’s growth as a person when he says, “Kindness is the only strength there is…”

Read the prompt and make sure you answer what the question is actually asking.

Avoid using 1st person and 2nd person language. Stay away from “I believe…,” “In my opinion…,” “You can see how…”

Use quotation marks for articles, short stories, and poems. “Richard Sherman Apologizes for Rant” “The Most Dangerous Game” “The Road Less Traveled”

If applicable, address any counterarguments• Is your answer the

only right answer? What might someone else say? Does their argument have a point or can you create a strong counterargument against it?

Which norm(s) is each sentence breaking? How can it be revised? (There may be more than one broken norm)

1. Though math, science, and social studies are great subjects, I believe English to be the best subject to study due to its ability to help with oral and written communication and its discussions of humanity.

2. For example, it says in Tattoos on the Heart, ““Here is what we seek: a compassion that can stand in awe at what the poor have to carry rather than stand in judgment at how they carry it.”

3. As you can see, these writing norms may take practice to perfect.

Anticipation for Tattoos on the Heart Determine whether you agree or

disagree with each statement on the sheet. Be prepared to discuss your answers.

HW:

Read “Gang Mayhem Grips L.A.” article and answer the questions that follow (4 short questions) I recommend reading the questions before

the article so you know what to look for. Use your writing norms in your responses.

Exit:

On your sticky note that has your name on it, write down three writing norms that will be expected of you. Stick it on the door on your way out.
