Pattern Details
Finished Piecing Size
This rosette is created using half inch shapes.Finished Rosette Size = Width: 8 1/8” Height: 8 1/8” approximately
What You Will Need
1. Paper Templates - Half inch size papers in the following shapes: Honeycomb and square.
2. Fabric – The rosette can be created using a variety of different fabrics and colours. You can do all patterned fabrics, all plain fabrics or a combination of printed and plain fabrics. This pattern is a great way to use up scraps. This pattern shows nine colours/fabrics. A colouring-in graph is included in this pattern so you can experiment with fabric/colour placement.
3. Tools for Basting – The technique you use to baste the shapes is entirely up to you. You may prefer to thread baste or glue baste. I used the thread basting method for mine.
4. Needles and Thread - This comes down to personal preference, but I recommend using a Milliner's Size 11 sewing needle. My thread of choice is Bottom Line Thread by Superior Threads (colour 652 Statue is a nice neutral colour that blends in with most fabric colours).

Tips for English Paper Piecing
English Paper Piecing is a method of patchwork where fabric is wrapped over a paper shape and then hand-sewn together using small stitches. Once completely sewn together the papers are removed. This method of patchwork allows the quilter to create intricate patterns and designs with great precision and accuracy.
Cutting Fabrics and Basting PapersI recommend cutting your fabric with a seam allowance of no less than 1/4" on all sides. When basting your fabric to your paper, place the paper to the wrong side of the fabric and hold it centred. Fold the seam allowance over the paper to the back, ensuring you make nice crisp edges along the shape sides. Hand-sew or glue baste the sides down one at a time.
Sewing Pieces TogetherStart with a length of thread with a knot in the bottom. To sew your basted paper shapes together, place them face to face (fabric sides together) and using a small whip stitch catch a couple of fabric threads of both shapes along the fold of the seam allowance. I also create a figure 8 knot at the start and end of each shape edge. Because EPP is completely hand pieced, this locking knot helps secure the shapes together for longevity. Sew each side one at a time to join your shapes together. You may need to fold some shapes in order to sew corresponding sides together. I have step by step diagrams in this pattern for constructing and piecing the shapes together.
Finishing OffTo finish off your pieced design you can applique it onto a piece of backing fabric. To do this I use a piece of visafix to secure my pieced work to the backing fabric. Ensure you have taken out all of the papers before ironing your pieced work. You may also like to use some large basting stitches along the edge of the design to secure it to the backing fabric. I use the same Superior Threads Bottom Line Thread for appliqueing the pieced work to backing fabric. Once you have your pieced work sewn on to the backing fabric you can choose to frame it in a timber embroidery hoop, frame, or turn your rosette in to a quilt. I have framed my Rosette in a 250mm (10 inch) wooden embroidery hoop.
You can find video tutorials on basting and piecing different shapes, as well as the figure 8 knot and appliqueing pieced work onto the backing fabric over on The Maker’s Stash YouTube Channel.
