1-Reading Comprehension

RI.5.10 Read and comprehend informational texts

1-Read the following passage then answer the questions that follow. Government Must Fund Inventors

Every year, our government collects trillions of dollars in taxes. Most of the funds pay for

programs that keep citizens safe and healthy. Other amounts fund programs such as public

education. Some of the money goes to run the government itself. It's expensive to keep our

country running!

Sadly, just a small percentage goes to fund innovation and invention. In recent years, the

government has spent only a small percentage of the federal budget on scientific and medical

research. This is not right! The federal government must spend more money to support

inventors and their work.

Invention is crucial for the economic and social well-being of our country. Funding inventors

improves people's lives, creates jobs, and helps our nation excel as a leader in science and

technology.

Inventors Need Government Support

It's often the case that only the government has the huge funds needed to support truly great

innovation. To build a faster computer or transcend the barriers of space travel, inventors

need enormous sums of money. The government spent about $20 billion on the Apollo space

program, which took astronauts to the moon. The project likely could not have succeeded

without government help.

Government support of invention has frequently led to more innovation. A simple example is

memory foam. This "space age" material first helped protect astronauts from collisions.

Consequently, many people today now sleep on mattresses made of this squishy, comfortable

material. It's even used to add cushion in shoes! Other innovations include devices that help

the deaf hear, probes that help doctors look inside arteries, and scratch-resistant eyeglasses.

Inventors Change Our Lives for the Better

Government support of innovation has always benefited society. Specifically, government

funds have contributed to inventions such as cell phones, electric cars, and the Internet.

It's the government's job to improve the lives of its citizens. Inventors do this all the time.

Think about the contributions of inventors like the illustrious Thomas Edison. Who can doubt

that his light bulb made life easier? Think of computer giants like Bill Gates and Steve Jobs,

whom many revere for how they changed the world. The government should be doing all it

can to help new inventors follow in their footsteps.

Now, some people might feel that invention is too risky a business for the government to be

involved in. Yes, most inventors do fail at first. But failure is a central part of the process. It is

how great ideas become great products.

In 1967, for example, an Apollo spacecraft caught fire on the launch pad. Three astronauts

died. Inventors learned from this terrible accident. They made improvements to the

spacecraft. The improvements helped astronauts land on the moon.

Let’s Be World Leaders!

Innovation in technology and science helps our country maintain its place as a world leader.

Each year, thousands of students travel here from other lands. They come to study at our

schools and universities.

Inventors improve the lives of everyone. Inventors help make our country strong and

prosperous. Our government must continue to invest in inventors and their innovations.

Many Ways to Tell a Story

Most of us think of books and prose when we think of stories, but a great story can come in

many other forms, too – myths and fables, plays, movies, poems, and even songs. For a person

who loves stories, they can be found nearly anywhere, and there are countless ways in which

to enjoy them and share them with stories!

Digital Formats

Have you ever read an "eBook" on a tablet computer or a story on a website? If so, you

probably know that digital formats sometimes offer features you won't find in a printed book.

You might be able to select a name or place and be taken to a website with extra information,

pictures, or videos about it. Some eBooks even have multimedia embedded within them, like

music the author wants readers to listen to during certain scenes or chapters.

Movies, Television, and Plays

People adore stories in the forms of movies, TV shows, and plays. These formats bring

characters, dialogue, settings, and events to life. They often feature music that supports the

mood of story scenes, especially the story's climax. But many people still prefer that special

feeling of sitting down with a good printed book. Books allow readers to use their

imaginations. They also allow authors to show more of what characters are thinking than a

typical play or film would. There's almost unlimited room for the author to provide readers

with descriptions and background information. Often, this kind of information is provided in a

foreword at the beginning of the book, but in some books it can be found throughout.

Music and Other Art Forms

Is it hard to imagine telling a story through dance? Think about famous ballets, such as The

Nutcracker. Like plays, many ballet productions feature characters and events. They use

costumes, scenery, and music to help bring a story to life.

You can probably think of several songs that tell stories all on their own, too. Such a song

might not include dialogue, but it will include characters and events. The music and the

singer's voice help set the mood and convey meaning. A symphony called "Peter and the

Wolf" tells a whole fairytale through music. The musicians' instruments play the roles of story

characters.

Some paintings and other artworks tell stories, as well. The Bayeux (by-YOO) Tapestry is an

embroidered cloth, created hundreds of years ago. It tells the story of a battle for control of

England. Some native people of the Pacific Northwest carved totem poles that feature

characters and events from their cultures' myths and legends.

What kind of storytelling form is your favorite?

Volcanoes

The surface of earth is not solid. There are many holes which allow magma to

come out to the surface. Magma is molten rocks. When it does reach the

surface magma is called lava. If there is a great pressure behind the magma, it

explodes sending dust, ash, lava, and rocks high into the air. When there is

only small pressure magma simply bubble up and form a lava flow that spreads

across the land. A volcano may be active, or it may be inactive. Scientists,

called volcanologists, are always ready to learn more because each volcano is

unique and may teach them something new about the inner workings of the

earth.
