Patna: Manisha, 20, daughter of a vegetable vendor from a village near Patna, will graduate from the country’s top engineering college, Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, next month.

“I owe this to my mother, who encouraged me to study,” says Manisha, who studied in a government school.

It wasn’t an easy road for her. More than 40% of the girls from her village drop out after primary school because the nearest secondary school is far from the village.

Manisha's quest for learning was supported by an NGO who helped her prepare for the IIT entrance exam.

“What motivates me is that my siblings and other family members look to me for inspiration,” says Manisha, who is now the most educated woman in her village.

Amit had won a scholarship to study at a leading public school, where most students came from rich families. Amit’s classmates were not very welcoming, so he kept to himself.

A month later Ramesh joined the school. During the lunch break, he walked up to Amit and ate with him. After that day, the two boys became good friends. They studied and played together.

Both boys did well in the examination. During the summer holidays, Ramesh went abroad, while Amit waited for his results at home.

On the first day of the new session, Ramesh waited for Amit, but he didn’t come. Later, Ramesh found out that Amit didn’t get the scholarship for the next academic year so he had to leave the school.
