Republic of Korea

English Training Abroad (ETA) offers customised educational programs, both in Australia and internationally. ETA uses modern TESOL educational techniques and approaches, including communicative language teaching methodologies for all English language levels.

Program delivery also includes on-line learning support as well as a range of training, educational and cultural opportunities in Australia.

Students who complete the program will be awarded an English Training Abroad Certificate. Students with this certification, and an IELTS level 7, are eligible to enrol in postgraduate studies at Australian universities.

ETA and AA Korea are working together to deliver a professional development training program for teachers in Incheon, Republic of

Korea


Experience TESOL is an acronym for “Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages”.

It encompasses both ESL - teaching English in countries like Australia, where people from immigrant, refugee or indigenous backgrounds learn English as a second language, and EFL – where students in countries where English is not the dominant language learn English as a foreign language.

The TESOL area of study offers students a wide range of subjects in which they will be able to develop their expertise in primary, secondary and/or adult ESL or EFL teaching contexts.

There are some courses available which enable you to learn the principles of teaching and learning second languages from both a theoretical and a practical perspective, without requiring specialisation in a particular language or a choice between TESOL or LOTE as a teaching area.

Such courses often serve as bridging courses for graduates whose current skills (including English language skills) do not properly equip them to enter straight into TESOL or LOTE at a post-graduate level.

They provide a professional in-service program to practicing teachers.

This TESOL Professional Development program serves this purpose – to provide prerequisite training in an introduction to TESOL research and theory as well as improving the English language skill proficiency of its participating teachers.

The TESOL professional development program is comprehensive and practical.

It is tailored to cater to the needs of participants who, as yet, have not reached the appropriate English Language Entry requirements for post-graduate studies at Australian universities.

This program provides extensive support in developing personal English language skills whilst preparing for post-graduate study in Australia.

The TESOL professional development program can be adapted to suit the needs of the client group. This may include the following: Length of Program can vary from 1 month intensive delivery to weekly (minimum of 6 hours per week per group).

Delivery of Program can be in the Republic of Korea, in Australia or a combination of both.

Distance (online) delivery should be considered as a valuable part of a blended delivery program.

Program content will be adapted according to length of program, delivery options and suitability of teacher English language levels.

This TESOL professional development program provides initial preparation and continuing professional development for Republic of Korea elementary, middle, high school and other teachers who are considering entering an accredited post-graduate university qualification in Australia and overseas.

This program aims to advance understanding of the theory and practice of teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages.

Teachers will have opportunity to achieve an increased level of competence in their own personal English language levels.



While the main focus of study is the language teaching methods and the practicality of classroom teaching, the program also offers subjects introducing other areas paramount to contemporary language teachers.

The subjects include language testing, computer-assisted language learning, second language acquisition, basic grammar and syllabus design.

Also, the program raises some important issues relevant to a modern language teacher such as culture awareness and learner sensitivities.

The aim of these subjects is to give practical introduction to the above mentioned areas as well as to raise awareness of and the need for further professional development.

Modification to the timetable may occur to accommodate student needs.

Experience Incheon Component – Intensive English Program

Developing Greater English Language Competence in ReadingThe written word surrounds us daily. We are members of a literate society. For ESL learners, there is a need to continually expand and extend their capabilities to increase communicative competence. In this subject, participants will look at the schema of reading, the types of reading that they undertake and the role of comprehension in supporting effective communicative competence.

Developing English Language Lessons in ReadingThis subject will help participants to develop skills in teaching reading comprehension, providing reading schemas, understanding the role of vocabulary in developing interactive reading techniques for effective reading lessons and activities.

Developing Greater English Language Competence in WritingWriting includes the production of a piece of writing and is often the last macro skill to develop in second language learners. This subject will provide participants with the opportunity to enhance their writing skills and to develop more confidence in the production of written pieces in English.

Developing English Language Lessons in WritingThis subject will look at the microskills of writing and provide participants with extensive activities and practice in developing interactive and effective writing lessons for their English classrooms.



Developing Greater English Language Competence in SpeakingFrom a communicative view of the language classroom, listening and speaking skills are closely related. The interaction between these two modes of performance applies especially to the conversation. Participants will be given extensive opportunity to apply and practice English speaking skills during this subject.

Developing English Language Lessons in SpeakingThis subject will consider the role of transactional dialogues, conversations and the role of pronunciation on the English language learning classroom. Participants will apply the theory of speaking with the design of practical communicatively engaging speaking activities.

Developing Greater English Language Competence in ListeningThe importance of listening in language learning can hardly be overestimated. Through reception, we internalise linguistic information without which we could not produce language. In classrooms, students always do more listening than speaking. Listening is a major component in language learning and in this subject participants will develop understanding of interactive listening comprehension.

Developing English Language Lessons in ListeningThe microskills of listening will be developed. Extensive practical activities will support the principles of teaching listening in the English language learning classroom.



Curriculum and Syllabus Design This subject will introduce participants to a range of modern syllabus design techniques and models. Participants will be engaged in the development of language lessons using a range of syllabi.

Introduction to Modern Language Teaching MethodsThis subject will begin whilst the participants are in South Korea via online learning. When arriving in Australia participants will continue to look at the range of modern communicative language teaching methods.

Assessing English Language SkillsThis subject will focus on different types of assessment in a language classroom. Included in this will include the understanding of formative, summative, norm-based, criterion-based and competency based assessments.

Professional Practice – Preparing a Professional PresentationAs preparation for further accredited training in Australian post-graduate courses, this subject provides participants with the opportunity to plan and prepare a professional presentation focusing on an aspect of Korean or Australian educational theory, practice or research. This presentation will be delivered in English during the final week of their studies.

Preparing for the Australian Cultural Studies Experience Participants will be coming to Australia for one month. Based on feedback from the 2007 Incheon Teacher’s Professional Development Program, this subject has been included to provide participants with practical, meaningful and potentially relevant information for a better English Language Immersion experience. This subject will include study of Australian culture, everyday language, geography, history, art and music.

Understanding Second Language Learner NeedsTo understand how best to teach English to speakers of other languages, the teacher must be aware of the needs and variables of the learner, including the different ways in which students learn. This subject includes practical application and understanding of the type of learning style each learner prefers.

Understanding the Australian Education SystemThis subject introduces students to the Australian Education System from entry level for young children through to bridging programs for international students wishing to study at post-graduate university level. This subject will be supported by guest speakers working in a range of Australian education settings. These guest presenters will help participants to understand the application and implementation of communicative language teaching classrooms. Curriculum Design – Communicative Language Teaching Theory and PracticeThis subject focuses on introducing the theory and application that underpins communicative language teaching. The practical application will include extensive work in developing and presenting practical themes that can be used in participant classrooms.


Experience Australian Component – Intensive English Program

Developing Communicative English Language LessonsThis subject will focus specifically on developing and designing communicative English language lessons. Included in this, will be the development of English language lessons across a range of curriculum areas (such as, science, history, the Arts, mathematics)

Implementing an Integrated Communicative English ClassroomThis subject follows Curriculum Design and focuses on development of integrated communicative English classroom teaching, with specific emphasis on the design of integrated classroom activities (that is, a combination of more than one English macro and /or micro skills).

Assessment and Evaluation in a Communicative English ClassroomThis subject will investigate strategies for assessment and evaluation of communicative English language lessons. Included in this subject will be error analysis, initial language assessment and placement, understanding the International Second Language Proficiency Rating (ISLPR) scales.

Presentations and Professional PracticeStudents will have prepared professional presentations. These will be presented to their peers and ETA staff during their final week of study in Australia.

Australian Educator Guest SpeakersA range of Australian educators from various sectors of the education system will speak to the visiting teachers about teaching English in a range of educational settings (including preschool, elementary, middle and high schools, adult ESL programs)

Experience Teaching English to Speakers of other

Languages in Australia

To be eligible to teach within the Australian public school system, you are required to complete a Bachelor of Education degree at a recognised higher education institution.

You may then upgrade this qualification with a postgraduate qualification in TESOL or LOTE teaching with a school specialisation, in order to be able to teach in these areas.

Or you may have a Bachelor of Education with ESL or LOTE specialisations.

Experience Post-graduate courses available to international students in Australian universities include:

Masters Degrees - Master of TESOL or Master of Education

These degrees can incorporate the Postgraduate Certificate for those who wish to undertake initial training within a Masters degree.

Most post-graduate courses include a number of subjects where generally the equivalent of 5,000 word academic assignments in English are expected as assessment.

Both Masters programs can be undertaken as either a coursework or research-classified degree, depending on whether a student wishes to undertake a research thesis or not.

Doctoral Degrees

Doctor of Education (D.Ed)The TESOL specialisation in the Doctor of Education can be taken as either a research-classified degree (with 55,000 word thesis), or as a coursework-classified degree (with Professional Project and 30,000 word thesis).

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D)This is a University-wide degree, usually administered by the School of Graduate Studies. Supervision is available in a broad range of TESOL areas.


Experience Post-graduate Studies in Australia

As part of its ongoing support of Republic of Korea teachers involved in the TESOL Teacher’s Professional Development Program, ETA staff will provide participants who have successfully completed the program and are interested in applying for entry into post-graduate courses at Australian universities, individualised pathway support. This is based on the following ETA conditions:

The participant must have achieved the requisite English Entry IELTS scores as listed on the following pages

The participant must have completed the ETA program within the previous 12 month period

The participant must be eligible for entry into Australia as an international student.


Experience ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS

for entry to all university courses

Applicants whose most recent qualifications were gained in a language other than English must provide evidence that, within the previous 24 months, they have obtained a score as follows:

• A minimum overall band score of 7.0 in IELTS, including a minimum over all score of 7.0 in the Academic writing module; or

• A minimum score of 600 in TOEFL, including a minimum score of 5.0 in the Test of Written English (TWE); or

• A minimum score of 250 in the computer based TOEFL, including a minimum essay rating score of 5.
