STAFF INTROS Im Cassie Wells, Ive been an academic advisor at International TEFL Academy for going on 3 years. I grew up in small town Indiana and studied fine art in Chicago. I worked in Television for a few years, and as glamorous as it may seem, it wasnt . I left to teach English in South Korea and had the best year of my life. After that I traveled Southeast Asia, parts of South America, and most recently had the culture shocked out of me in Egypt. It was FANTASTIC.

Why are so many people learning English? English is the international business language and regarded as the worlds second language. Adults and kids alike, all over the globe, are learning English every year to give them a competitive edge in school, the workplace, and with opportunities abroad.

19

For example: An auto parts store in Japan needs to order parts from a German manufacturer. The shop owner isnt going to call up an associate in Germany and speak German, and that associate will most likely not speak Japanese. Instead, they will communicate in English.

20

There are different types of schools you can work for, from public schools to private language academies - individually owned or international franchises24

Opportunities

What does a typical work week look like? Typically, you can expect 4/5 classes a day, 45 minutes to an hour long, spread out throughout the day, 20-25 hours of teaching per week, addition 8-10 hrs of prep time.

25

Where will I live?

You might be thinking, Where will I live? Here are some examples of what your housing may look like. As previously mentioned, some countries offer housing for free! Regardless of where you go you will at least be provided housing advice, so dont fret you wont be homeless! 26

Why would anyone want me to teach them English? .. - Well, in case of a fire, you dont want to reach for a hand grenadeI dont know too many friends with pet octopi. It doesnt seem responsible to feed your cat, Cat Smack. And I dont even know where to start with this one, but its written incorrectly. 27

Employers want you because YOU ARE THE MODEL and your students will want to talk like you, sound like you, and have your accent. You will bring English into context, along with your culture and enthusiasm.

The majority of schools use the full immersion method, which means you will be speaking English and English only at all times during class. So no need to worry about speaking their native language.

28

What are my responsibilities as a teacher?

What will I be teaching? Your responsibilities will include teaching the cornerstones of language learning, Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening along with Vocabulary and Grammar. Your students want the ability to hold conversations in English and speak as a native speaker, without an accent. 29

TOOLS & teCHNIQUES

Here are just some of the tools and techniques you will come to master with your TEFL training. Lesson planning, so you can create materials for any type of student you encounter.Error correction types, so to best correct an error while still encouraging your student.Using visual aids to enhance your effectiveness, all the way to how to set-up the physical classroom environment that best caters to your different lessons.30

Job market basics

As you begin choosing your adventure, here are some of the job market basic key points that will help you focus in on some of your highest priority destinations and discover those that may be a great fit that you hadnt considered before.InterviewsVisasDegree RequirementsPositionsHiring SeasonsMoney& Contracts33

First consider the type of interview procedure you prefer and/or are most comfortable with. Some interviews are done face-to-face in country while others are conducted in-advance over the phone, through email and via Skype. Some others can be a combination of both.34

Next is the type of Visa you will be on. Employers in some countries will provide you with a work visa/permit, while in other countries you will simply work on a student visa or tourist visa. 35

Degree requirements are also important to consider. Simply put, about half of the world requires a 4-year degree in addition to TEFL Certification and the other half does not. You will find examples of both in every region of the world. 36

Remember the types of schools slide? You will want to consider your working environment. Would you like a public school setting where you are THE English teacher or a private school where you can be one of 30 native English teachers just like you? Also, do you want to help people and make money as a private tutor?37

There are jobs available year round all over the globe, some markets are enormous to the point that any time of year is a great time to start. In some other countries it is more important to synchronize your start time with a bi-annual peak-hiring (or peak turnover) time when the most jobs will be available for you. 38

A great resource we have that may help you narrow down your country selection is our country chart. It lists the more popular destinations and provides an overview of the TEFL markets. Well paste the link to this chart in the chat box now, for your reference, but Id wait to dive into that until the webinar is finished. We dont want you to miss out on any valuable information!40

Money, money, money, mon-aye. Your TEFL Certification is geared for full-time, paid employment. No matter where you go, you are going to make enough money to live and cover your expenses while having fun and exploring with new friends. There are however countries where you can save a great deal of your monthly salary to pay off loans, save or live like a rockstar. 41

Are you interested in doing a typical 10 or 12 month contract? Or are you looking for a shorter term job for 3-6 months? Are you like many of us who want to spend more than a year abroad in one or multiple countries?42

How do I pick a country thats right for me?

How do I pick a country that is right for me?Do I want to teach in a country where I will break even on expenses or do I need to save a good portion of my salary?Do I want to teach in a location with 4-seasons or do I need to live in a tropical climate?Do I want to learn a new language?Do I need to have easy access to regional travel?43

Map of latin america

Major hiring periods in Central America will occur in February/March and then again in June/July. Mexico offers peak-hiring year-round. Throughout this region, the wages are modest, but given the low cost of living, full-time English teachers are able to live comfortably. Visas: Tourist Visa most common, renewed every 90 days

Hiring Seasons: Jan/February/March July/August Salary: Break-even

Most English language teachers work on a tourist visa and renew it every 90 days by visiting a neighboring country. This is the standard operating procedure for Latin America and gives you a great excuse to travel regionally, visiting more new places while teaching abroad.

Schools typically hire once in the early months, from January to March and then again in July or August.

English teachers earn enough to live comfortably and break-even. 52

Degree Requirements:

BA/BS preferred but not required for most countries

Types of Students:

Primarily Adults/Business Professionals, some opportunities with young learners

Contract length:

6-12 months typical, 3 month available

Latin America boasts a robust EFL teaching market. Teaching positions mostly do not require a 4-year degree in addition to your TEFL Certification. You will likely work with young adults and adults, but there is still the opportunity to teach younger learners as well. Contract lengths through this region are typically 6 or 12 months. You can even find 3 month countries in Peru!53

Asian job marketTop 6 Job Markets: South Korea, China, Taiwan, Thailand, Japan, Vietnam

Did You Know: Korean pop star, Psys hit Gangnam Style hit #1 on the US Billboard charts in 2013!

Now for the largest TEFL marketplace in the world, bar-none, Asia. There are more positions to teach English in Asia then there are teachers to fill them all. Lets learn more54

Map of asia

Most of the nations in Asia are highly industrialized and economically strong with large populations, enormous middle classes and an extremely high demand for education. This combination has created the strongest outward recruitment market in the world with hundreds of thousands of jobs paying wages that far exceed the cost of living. The job markets for teaching both adults and young learners are both strong, which is also underscored by the fact that hiring seasons in language schools run year-round due to the high demand for teachers.55

Interview Procedure: In advance by phone/email/Skype

Hiring Seasons: Year Round

Visas: Working visa typically sponsored by employer

Interviews are generally conducted in-advance through email, over the phone and via Skype. So you can have your job waiting for you before you leave your home country. How does that sound? The majority of opportunities will be in Private Language Academies, so schools are up and running the majority of the year, which means year-round hiring!Employers typically sponsor you for your working visa as well. So, for those of you that want that extra level of convenience, explore your options in Asia.56

Degree Requirements:

BA/BS degree required for most

BA/BS degree not required for China, Cambodia

Types of Students:

Primarily Young Learners

4-year degrees are generally required in addition to your TEFL Certification. For example they are essentially required to teach in South Korea and Japan, but not for China or Cambodia. Also, if you are looking to help shape young minds, Asia offers the most opportunity for you to work with younger students. 57

Provided Airfare and Accommodation: Most common in South Korea & China

Salary: Ability to save money every month $200 - $1500 depending on country!

Contract Length:12 months most typical6 months possible

Asia is also an area of the world where you can easily save a great deal of your salary. So, for those of you with loans or in need of saving money, you can find that in Asia. For example, you can realistically SAVE $1,000 per month in South Korea. That is in-addition to getting free airfare and housing!

Contract lengths are generally 12 months with some 6 month opportunities. Many of you, like many of us, will end up staying much longer. That is the draw of this incredibly safe and fascinating culture!58

Middle east job marketTop 6 Job Markets: UAE, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Qatar, Kuwait, Turkey

Did You Know? Dubai is the fastest growing city in the world!

Lets cover your options in the other major TEFL marketplace, the Middle East!59

Degree Requirements in the Gulf: BA/BS required, MA preferred

Interview Procedure: In advance by phone/email/Skype

Contract Length:12 months

Visas:Work visa sponsored by employer

Oil rich nations of the Persian Gulf offer some of the most lucrative EFL teaching positions in the world, but those markets can be small and competitive, and many jobs require previous experience and advanced credentials. For these positions teachers will typically interview in-advance from their home country. 61

Interview Procedures: Face-to-Face in country

Visas: Tourist visa most common

Contract Length: 6-12 months

Interviews for positions in countries like Egypt, Morocco and Jordan are likely to be conduced in-country. Outside of the gulf states where you can secure work visas, EFL teachers should anticipate working on tourist visas. Contract lengths are typically 6 and 12 months. 62

Salary: Most break- evenOpportunity to save $800 - $2,000 USD in Gulf

Types of Students:Adults/Business Professionals and Young Learners

Hiring Seasons: Year Round

Most EFL teachers break-even while Persian Gulf teachers save $800-$2,000 per month with housing and airfare provided. The majority of jobs will be found in private schools and language institutes teaching both adults and children. Positions are open throughout the year, but months leading to the beginning of the school year in late August and September offer the most opportunities. 63
