ANNABEL LEE by Edgar Allan Poe 1849
It was many and many a year ago,
In a kingdom by the sea,
That a maiden there lived whom you may know
By the name of ANNABEL LEE;
And this maiden she lived with no other thought
Than to love and be loved by me.
I was a child and she was a child,
In this kingdom by the sea;
But we loved with a love that was more than love
I and my Annabel Lee;
With a love that the winged seraphs of heaven
Coveted her and me.
And this was the reason that, long ago,
In this kingdom by the sea,
A wind blew out of a cloud, chilling
My beautiful Annabel Lee;
So that her highborn kinsman came
And bore her away from me,
To shut her up in a sepulchre
4
בס''ד
In this kingdom by the sea.
The angels, not half so happy in heaven,
Went envying her and me
Yes!- that was the reason (as all men know,
In this kingdom by the sea)
That the wind came out of the cloud by night,
Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee.
But our love it was stronger by far than the love
Of those who were older than we
Of many far wiser than we
And neither the angels in heaven above,
Nor the demons down under the sea,
Can ever dissever my soul from the soul
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee.
For the moon never beams without bringing me dreams
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And the stars never rise but I feel the bright eyes
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side
Of my darling- my darling- my life and my bride,
In the sepulchre there by the sea,
In her tomb by the sounding sea.

Application of HOTS to Text
In this section, we would explore the connection that we can make
between the real women in Poe’s life and the one portrayed in the poem
Annabelle Lee.
The Women in Edgar Allan Poe’s Life
Poe’s mother ELIZABETH POE died at the age of 24 and left 2 years old Poe
without a maternal figure for many years.
FRANCES VALENTINE ALLAN: she and her husband took
Edgar in after his mother’s death. She was an important figure
in Poe’s life and died in 1829.
VIRGINIA ELIZA CLEMM: was Poe’s cousin who became his
wife when she was thirteen. Virginia became the central female
figure in his life. She died of tuberculosis . Poe died two and a half
years later.
11
בס''ד
During these two and a half years, Poe had a relationship with SARAH
ELMIRA ROYSTER, which he knew when he was 17 years old and
now resumed his relationship
With her.
SARAH HELEN WHITMAN: Poe was engaged for a short time to
sarah, an engagement that they broke off. Less than a year later,
Edgar Allan Poe was dead.

Kingdom by the seaLoveAnnabelle Lee
The speaker is consumed by Annabelle Lee and their love in an ideal and utopic world.
Literary Term: setting
A setting is “where and when” the story takes place, or the background against which the story unfolds. The setting includes:
a. The geographic location, scenery, or the inside of a home or other placeb. The social community in which the story unfolds (upper class, working class etc.)c. The season or time period
3) What is the setting of the poem? How do you think it contributes to the meaning of the poem?
The setting of the poem occurs in a “kingdom by the sea”, “many and many a year ago”
The setting of the poem creates an atmosphere of a fairy tale, and makes the love between the speaker and Annabelle Lee an “out of this world” love, love without boundaries of space and time, love that crosses heaven and earth, love that conquers all, an everlasting love. Annabelle Lee is the unattainable princess in the poem that the speaker worships.
Bridging Text and Context
One of the quotes by Edgar Allan Poe is about a death of a beautiful woman.
Poe believed that:
“The death of a beautiful woman, is unquestionably the most poetical topic in the world.”
Connect this quote to the poem Annabelle Lee
Answer:
In his quote, Poe states that the theme of a
14
בס''ד
death of a beautiful woman is the most
Suitable topic for a poem. In the poem
Annabelle Lee, the speaker describes his
“Stronger than life” Love to his
beautiful Annabelle Lee that died
pre-maturely as a result of a chilling wind
that the envious angels sent. There is a
repetition throughout the poem of the phrase: “My beautiful
Annabel Lee”. The speaker emphasized his unconditional
admiration and love toward Annabelle Lee, and the fact that she
is dead makes his love to her an unattainable and “out of this
world” love. The speaker accentuates her death by mentioning
variation names of a grave. He mentions three times Annabelle
Lee’s current residing place: “To shut her up in a sepulcher”’ and
at the end of the poem: “In the sepulcher there by the sea, In her
tomb by the sounding sea.”
In conclusion, we can see how this quote connects to our poem
because the main theme of the poem is the death of the
speaker’s beautiful lover, his way of dealing with her loss and the
15
בס''ד
love that continues after her death, strong, as was when she was
alive.

Bridging Text and Context (15 points)
9) Virginia Eliza Clemm was Poe’s cousin who became his wife when she was thirteen. Virginia became the central female figure in his life. In 1847, Poe’s wife became ill with tuberculosis and died. Edgar was devastated by the loss of his wife and started abusing alcohol. His depression intensified over the next few years. On October 3, 1849, Poe was found delirious on the streets of Baltimore, wearing the clothes of another person. He died four days later.

Answer Key:
1) The reality described in the first two stanzas of the poem is the strong love between the speaker and his beloved Annabel Lee. The speaker and Annabel Lee lived and loved “in the kingdom by the sea”. Their love was so strong until the seraphs in heaven were jealous of their love.
2) Annabel Lee died of a wind that “chilled and killed” her.3) The reason for Annabel Lee’s death is the jealousy of the angels that desired the strong
love between the speaker and Annabel Lee.4) The speaker lies at night by Annabel Lee’s grave.5) The light of the moon and the stars.6) One of the HOTS associated with the poem is Making Connections.
It helped me understand the poem better because in many ways the poet’s own life and the role of his love to his wife in real life resemble the main themes in the poem of love, memories and coping with death.
7) Love Coping with lossAn eternal LoveNothing can come between a true love
22
בס''ד
Memories
8) The setting of the poem occurs in a “kingdom by the sea”“, many and many a year ago”
9) Poe married Virginia Clemm when she was very young at the age of 13. Virginia became “the central figure in his life”. Virginia died of TB, a disease that mostly affects the lungs. Merely two years later, Poe himself found his death after suffering from a depression and alcoholism. In the poem Annabel Lee, the speaker states that the love between himself and his beloved happened when “[he] was a child and she was a child”, just like in real life, Poe married Virginia in such a young age. In addition, the cause of death in the poem, the wind that the envious angels sent, a wind that “chilled and killed” Annabel Lee, may echo the symptoms of TB that killed Poe’s wife such as coughing and chills that are characteristics of the disease. Moreover, in the poem, after Annabel Lee’s death, the speaker cannot find peace and is surrounding himself by her memories, likewise Poe, cannot recover from the death of his wife and is found two years later drunk and died shortly after.
