    I am glad to present to you the CII Delhi Annual Report for the year 2011-12. CII Delhi State Council worked with the industry and government on not just a high growth ambition, but with a focus on over all inclusiveness.

    Water management is an area that needs urgent attention in Delhi. We organised a seminar along with Delhi Jal Board and International Development Law Organisation on Water Management, which was inaugurated by Smt Sheila Dikshit, Chief Minister of Delhi. I am glad that the session was well received by media and membership alike.

    The Delhi State Council engaged actively with the Government of NCT of Delhi. CII participated in the Plant a Million Trees Campaign of the Delhi Government. On the policy front, we presented the State Pre Budget Memorandum, capturing industry's suggestions for the State budget. The industry also supported clearance of FDI in multibrand retail.

    I am happy to inform you about the CII Delhi Task Force, an initiative led by Mr Harpal Singh, Past Chairman CII Northern Region and Mentor & Chairman Emeritus, Fortis Healthcare Ltd. The Task Force aims to address the issues of urbanisation in Delhi and make Delhi a better place to live for its residents. The focus areas include traffic management, water and sanitation, energy conservation, Delhi 2021.

    Yi Delhi Chapter has been very active this year. A good number of activities focusing on diverse areas that affect the youth were organised throughout the year. Sessions on a variety of subjects including Competition Laws, Anger Management, Leadership Development, etc. were well received. I congratulate Yi Delhi Executive Council, led by Mr Raghu Marwah, Chairman, Yi Delhi Chapter for their commitment and efforts.

    Overall, this has been a year of consolidation and focusing on initiatives in diverse areas. I gratefully acknowledge the co-operation and support received from Chairman and Deputy Chairman CII Northern Region I must take this opportunity to thank my Vice Chairman, Mr Pranay Sinha for his valuable inputs and his cooperation in taking forward the work of the Council.

    I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the Past Chairs of the CII Delhi State Council for their support and trust in me.

    I must also place on record my gratitude to all the members for their active participation in CII initiatives. I am confident that the Council will continue to play the essential role of an enabler to encourage business and enterprise in the coming year and wish them all the success.

    Personally, I enjoyed this responsibility and hope to see greater association with the CII Delhi State Council in the future.

    CII Delhi Annual Session 2011 and Panel Discussion on 'Building Smart & Sustainable Cities'

    CII Delhi organized a panel discussion on 'Building Smart & Sustainable Cities' in NCR at New Delhi.

    “Urbanisation & Industrialization are being looked at as friends. The time is right to create at least one smart & sustainable model city in the NCR that could be replicated nationally”, stated Ms Karuna Gopal, President, Foundation for Futuristic Cities.

    Mr Virat Bhatia, Chairman, CII Delhi State Council and President - IEA, South Asia, AT&T laid emphasis on the Inside Out Approach of smart & sustainable cities. He also emphasized on the need for extended collaboration between, Government, Industry & Civil Society.

    CII Delhi Task Force

    Delhi Task Force constituted by CII in 2012 aims to act as an active platform for the industry to engage with the State Government on issues of Urban Development and Urban Governance. The Task Force is being led by Mr Harpal Singh, Past Chairman, CII Northern Region & Mentor & Chairman Emeritus, Fortis Healthcare P Ltd and Mr Vijay Thadani, Chairman, CII Northern Region and CEO , NIIT.

    The Task Force has over 60 members focusing on issues that Delhi as a city should focus to be a called a World Class City. These members include government officials, experts in energy, urban planning, traffic management systems and senior members from the Confederation. The first meeting of the Task Force took place on 5th January 2012 and it was decided at the meeting that for 2012, the Focus Areas for the Task Force would be:

    Delhi 2021

    Energy Conservation

    Traffic Management

    Water and Sanitation

    Commonwealth Sports Infrastructure

    Sub Groups have been formed on these focus areas and being led by Task Force members.

    Mr Harpal Singh, Mr Vijay Thadani and Mr Virat Bhatia met with Smt Sheila Dikshit, Chief Minister, Govt of NCT of Delhi on 5 March 2012 . The Chief Minister was very supportive of the initiative and congratulated CII for taking up such a relevant initiative.

    The Task Force would present its recommendations and suggestions to the State Government.

    Seminar on Legal Foundations for Sustainable Water Management in Delhi

    13 – 14 October 2011

    This seminar was jointly organised by International Development Law Organisation , Delhi Jal Board and Confederation of Indian Industry

    Mr D V Singh, Secretary, Ministry of Water Resources, Government of India advocated for a comprehensive and broad framework of law for sustainable water management.

    Mr P K Tripathi, Chief Secretary, Govt of NCT of Delhi mentioned that with development, legislation plays an inevitable role to make sure that water resource management is sustainable. He stated that realistic pricing of water is the need of the hour.

    Two reports / papers were released at the Seminar:

    IDLO-CISDL Compendium of Legal Best Practices Worldwide in Sustainable Water Management in Developing Countries.

    IDLO-CISDL Draft Legal Working Paper on Sustainable Water Management in the National Capital Territory of Delhi

    I urge the citizens of Delhi to avoid wastage of water and spread awareness on recycling and wastewater management. I would like CII and Delhi Jal Board to come together and undertake a mass awareness campaign on Water Conservation

    CII report on “Investment Climate in Delhi”

    CII Delhi released a report, titled “Investment Climate in Delhi”; the seventh report in Talking North series.

    The series is an endeavor to benchmark the progress of the northern region vis-à-vis other regions on various aspects, and also compare the states within the region.

    The report provides information on the status and development of v a r i o u s m a c r o e c o n o m i c parameters such as economic g rowth , hea l th , educa t ion , investment policies, fiscal stability, etc. for the State of Delhi.

    It highlights the skilled labour base of Delhi supported by robust infrastructure. This makes the State an attractive investment destination for knowledge based, service sector, IT/ITeS type of industries.

    24th Quality Circle Competition Preliminary Delhi

    9 November 2011, New Delhi

    The state preliminary for the 24th Quality Circle Competition was received well. Over 200 workers from 20 Quality Circle teams participated in the Competition. The evaluation was based on factors like problem selection, analysis, solution, presentation, etc.

    The team 'Parivartan' from Neel Metal Products Ltd was adjudged the winner. The First Runners up was team 'Disha' from Sandhar Automotives Ltd and team ' Tanishq' from Mindarika Pvt Ltd bagged the Second Runner up place.

    CII - BEE Workshop on Enhancing Competitiveness through Energy Efficiency:

    27 July 2011

    With an objective to promote energy efficient practices, CII & Bureau of Energy Efficiency joined hands to organise a workshop on Enhancing Competitiveness through Energy Efficiency.

    Dr Ajay Mathur, Director General, BEE inaugurated the workshop. Speaking at the inaugural session, he mentioned that the emphasis should be on creating technologies that are cost effective to production and operations.

    CII supports Delhi Govt Plantation Campaign

    The Delhi Government launched “City Plants a Million Trees this Monsoon” campaign to plant million trees this monsoon. The objective of the campaign is to increase the green cover in Delhi from about 20 per cent at present to the national target of 33 per cent by 2012.

    As a part of the campaign, free saplings were distributed through distribution centers at 50 metro stations, 51 petrol pumps, 52 CNG stations, and 10 major Delhi Government offices.

    CII and United Technologies, a CII member company, supported the initiative. Hon'be Chief Minister of Delhi felicitated CII and United Technologies on 18 August 2011.

    Awareness and Sensitization Programme on HIV/AIDS:

    23 August 2011

    The awareness and sensitization programme on HIV/AIDS was organized for the workers of Diamond International, a CII member company. The session helped the workers in clearing their myths and perceptions about the disease and its spread. Around 200 workers attended the session.

    The session was conducted by Mr Narender Kumar, Programme Officer, State Training Resource Center (STRC) from Delhi State AIDS Control Society.

    Awareness and Sensitization Programme on HIV/AIDS:

    23 August 2011

    The awareness and sensitization programme on HIV/AIDS was organized for the workers of Diamond International, a CII member company. The session helped the workers in clearing their myths and perceptions about the disease and its spread. Around 200 workers attended the session.

    The session was conducted by Mr Narender Kumar, Programme Officer, State Training Resource Center (STRC) from Delhi State AIDS Control Society.

    Seminar on “2011 Wuhan-New Delhi Economic and Trade Cooperation”

    13 September 2011

    The session was jointly organized with the China Council for Promotion of International Trade aimed at facilitating interaction between businesses in Delhi and Wuhan. The session was organized to facilitate newer business opportunities in the Wuhan Region.

    Mr. Tian Chengzhong, Vice Governor, Hubei Province of China led a delegation of 25 industry members from Hubei to India. He shared that Hubei province and its capital city Wuhan have established modern industrial set ups covering auto, steel, petrochemical, electronic information, food, textile, and equipment manufacturing. As a fast developing province of China, the bilateral cooperation between India and Hubei would be hugely mutually beneficial.

    World Investment Conference: Delhi Roadshow

    To inform the membership on the opportunities being presented by The World Investment Conference, a roads-how was held at Delhi.

    Mr Jean-Bernard Guerree, CEO, World Investment Conferences, SAS, briefed the participants on the upcoming conference which dwells on cross-border investments dedicated to stimulating and facilitating FDI from around the world to specific and targeted countries or regions.     On the occasion of the World Environment Day, Yi Delhi members and their families came together to make seed balls. Around 250 seed balls were made and sent to Yi Delhi nets.

    Documentary Movie & Panel Discussion on Anger Issues

    5 November 2011, New Delhi

    The discussion which was attended by over 40 senior representatives from industry, media firms, and institutions, focused on examining the emotional and physiological costs of living in a world that seems to be chronically agitated. The documentary focused on the long-term impact of chronic stress on the brain and body. It examines how the individual can mitigate disaster by developing healthier copying mechanisms, leading to emotionally stable, meaningful lives. The movie has been made by a Yi Delhi member Ms Vandana Kohli, a musician, photographer, and a film maker.
