GREYHOUND INJURY FULL RECOVERY SCHEME (GIFRS)Under GIFRS the ownership of a greyhound sustaining an eligible injury at a race meeting is transferred to RWWA’s Greyhounds as Pets (GAP) program, following which the injured greyhound is transported to emergency care and all associated costs of surgery and rehabilitation are covered by RWWA. If suitable, the greyhound will then be rehomed post recovery through GAP’s standard processes.

This scheme complements the Greyhound Injury Surgery Rebate (GISR), where RWWA offers a financial contribution, for eligible cases, to help the trainer and owner pay for the costs of veterinary care.

We have decided on this time to allow trainers to nominate and attend meeting.

FROM THE STEWARDS

It is with great pleasure that Stewards wish to announce two new appointments in the greyhound Stewards panel. Mr Simon Jones has been appointed as senior Greyhound Steward with immediate effect. Simon first commenced with RWWA back in 2008 after being previously employed as a greyhound Steward in Canberra before joining us in the West as a part time Steward. Simon has a tremendous amount of experience and we offer our congratulations to him on his appointment.

The other appointment is Mr Mark Thomas. Mark has recently resigned from the Grading department to take up a position as a full time Cadet Steward within the greyhound code. Most of us would be aware that Mark first began his greyhound career as a part time greyhound Steward prior to gaining full time employment in the grading division. Mark will commence with the greyhound Stewards panel on 15 March 2021. We welcome Mark to his new position and wish both Simon and Mark successful careers.

KENNEL COUGH

RWWA has received reports from industry of an increased incidence of Kennel Cough in Western Australian greyhound racing kennels.

What is Kennel Cough? Kennel Cough, or Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex (CIRDC), is a highly contagious disease in dogs, caused by a number of upper respiratory viruses (including canine parainfluenza virus) and bacteria (usually Bordetella bronchiseptica). How do dogs get Kennel Cough? Kennel Cough is spread as droplets in the air from a coughing dog to a healthy dog that come into close contact. Once a grey-hound has inhaled the infection, it usually takes between five and seven days for symptoms to appear. It is important to note that even after coughing has ceased and your greyhound appears well, it may remain infectious for up to three months, these animals are known as ‘carriers’. What are the main symptoms of Kennel Cough? • runny nose • sneezing • dry, hacking cough Can Kennel Cough be prevented? Annual vaccination against Bordetella bronchiseptica and canine parainfluenza virus (part of the C5 vaccination) can aid in the pre-vention of Kennel Cough outbreaks and help to reduce the incidence and/or severity of the disease in racing kennels. Vaccination for Kennel Cough forms part of the required schedule of vaccination for racing and breeding greyhounds to comply with the Rules of Racing.

Are there any other ways to protect my dog from Kennel Cough? Maintaining good biosecurity is key to preventing Kennel Cough from entering your kennels. New greyhounds on the property should be quarantined on arrival for 7-14 days to ensure they are not showing any signs of Kennel Cough or incubating the disease at time of arrival. My greyhound has Kennel Cough, what do I do?

The sick greyhound should be immediately isolated from all other dogs on your property. Greyhounds in contact with affected grey-hounds should be quarantined and monitored closely for symptoms. The kennels used to house the affected greyhounds should be completely disinfected to remove any residual contamination.

Greyhounds which become unwell in themselves, are lethargic, anorexic or a persistent coughing (>24 hours) should be seen by your veterinarian.Your veterinarian can provide you with information about treatment, isolation/quarantine and vaccination options for the affected greyhound(s) and any other dogs on your property.

Greyhounds that have confirmed or suspected to have Kennel Cough should be scratched from races and not brought to Club facilities as they pose a risk of infection to other greyhounds. Trainers should also alert the Stewards to help us monitor for any potential outbreak, and to reduce the risk and minimise the impact of an outbreak, particularly when multiple animals are affected.

FFEEBBRRUUAARRYY 22002211 “TOMMY SHELBY”

The GCA Greyhound of the Month for February 2021 has been awarded to exciting West Australian sprinter Tommy Shelby after his outstanding performances, winning both his heat and final of the Group 1 Australian Cup.

Tommy Shelby in action winning his heat of the Australian Cup He has travelled the nation after winning the Hobart 1000 in December, early in February he finished third in the Gold Bullion at Albion Park to Shima Shine. Had no luck at the Meadows in the Temlee but bounded back with a scintillating best of night 29.51 Australian Cup heat win and came up with the dreaded box 4 in the final. In a memorable finish to the Group 1 TAB Australian Cup Tommy Shelby, prevailing in a spine-tingling duel down The Meadows home straight with Fernando Bluey. Continued Page 2…

2 Trained by Steve Withers, who also bred and part-owns the ‘people’s dog’, Tommy Shelby overcame box four to gun down leader Fernando Bluey in the shadows of the post to claim his second Group 1 trophy. “I’m very proud of the dog,” said Withers. “He’s just an awesome dog. “He’s a dog we’ve bred from home, he’s been on the journey, he’s been everywhere, he’s done the job everywhere and he’s really put an exclamation mark on his career. I think he deserves it.” Tommy Shelby started $2.80 favourite in the $300,000 to-the-winner final, despite continuing a horror run of draws during the three-week Cup Carnival. The son of Fernando Bale and Serena Fly High, named after the lead character from TV series Peaky Blinders, ran third from box six in the Group 1 Temlee invitational on opening night and then exited box five in his dominant heat performance. Fernando Bluey, trained by 18-year-old Kayla Cottrell, was the $4.30 second elect from box six and he once again demonstrated great early pace to lead, courtesy of a 5.02s first split, while Tommy Shelby overcame an average getaway to drive into second. Tommy Shelby levelled up to Fernando Bluey turning for home and finished the better in a stirring drive to the line in 29.86s, with Lakeview Cruiser ($10) finishing third, giving champion stud dog Fernando Bale the trifecta. “Your first instinct is good but I’m a little bit biased!” said Withers after the tight finish. “He’s been in every big race but he can’t draw a box and to get through the traffic tonight I’m very proud of him.” Adding further merit to Tommy Shelby’s Australian Cup heroics, he hasn’t raced in his home state since September 26 as he’s campaigned in Victoria, Tasmania, NSW and Queensland, winning the Hobart Thousand and placing in the Melbourne Cup, Million Dollar Chase and Gold Bullion. “He’s got an awesome temperament. He’s a pet at home and then he comes to the racetrack and turns it on,” said Withers. Withers and fellow owners, wife Kira and Michael and Jodie Harders, have generously been donating 10 per cent of their owners’ prizemoney, five per cent overall, to various charities each month, with Bushfire Volunteers WA the beneficiary in February. In was a memorable cup win and Tommy became the third Blue greyhound after Tasman Queen in 2008 and Luca Neveelk in 2015 to win the Cup all at the Meadows in the races 63-year history. As usual there were some great greyhounds competing in February on various tracks around Australia in a large number of Group races. However, for the mighty effort of consistent top-level racing and a win in the time honoured classic Australian Cup saw Tommy deserved his monthly award. Tommy Shelby is a Blue Dog whelped March 2018 by Fernando Bale from Serena Fly High (Bit Chilli x Sky Fly High). He is raced by the Harders Withers Syndicate and trained by Steve Withers at Casuarina in Western Australian. He has now won 27 races and been placed 10 times from 41 starts. Tommy Shelby’s overall prizemoney stands at $748,565. GCA congratulates owners the Harders Withers Syndicate, trainer Steve Withers and Tommy Shelby on being awarded the GCA Greyhound of the Month for February 2021. He joins Wow the first winner for 2021 of the GCA Greyhound of the Monthly award. Thanks for information supplied by GRV Website For more information please contact:
