EPQ? Extended Project Qualification. What is it? Ultimately it’s a personal research project which extends learning in a subject area OR an area of personal interest. It can be something really creative, commercial, vocational or academic, it’s up to you and what you want to learn.

What will I get out of it? You will improve your key skills and PLTS beyond those of most people your age who do not do the EPQ. Thus preparing you for the work place and University. You can achieve up to 70 UCAS points with an A*, you can also potentially get an AQA baccalaureate qualification in conjunction with this course.

What does it involve? 120 hours (78 hours timetabled) of guided learning hours including up to 30 hours of taught sessions on core skills and one to one time with your supervisor. .

Who is responsible? Your supervisor will offer guidance, but ultimately you must be responsible for your chosen project and your research..

What life experience will it bring to me? It depends on the project you choose, but there are already some real life projects available to you; explained on the next slide. You can take this in any direction in which you think will benefit you, so it is incredibly flexible; we only specify that it mustn’t directly link with a project you are already studying for academically; the key word is ‘extension. .

EPQ success:

• How many completed successfully in May? 15 with a whole range of interesting and individual topics

• How many were assessed at an A/A*? 86% • What did the students say?

Students in the last cohort at Crossley Heath said they got a lot out of the course, learning valuable research, presentation, analytical and essay writing skills. Students also improved self-organisation and referencing skills whilst at the same time gaining in-depth knowledge and experience in a topic of their own choice. All of these skills will help with applications to University and work.
