Enrollment planning a way to enhance quality

Enrollment ... continue on p2

The UFS will in the next few yearshave to carefully manage itsenrollment of students, said Prof.

Magda Fourie, Vice-rector AcademicPlanning, and Mr Willem Malherbe,Registrar Strategic Planning.

Over the past two years rapid growthwas experienced at all higher educationinstitutions, including, the UFS. A lack ofemployment, more learners passingmatric every year, availability of financialaid and an increase in living standards

are a few of the reasons why there wasan increase of 6,6% in the growth rate atuniversities in general. At the UFS inparticular, the turn-around strategy, bettermarketing, better programmes and betterfacilities were responsible for the growthrate above the national average.

Yet the budget for higher educationfrom the National Treasury is a limitedone and cannot cope with excessivegrowth in student numbers. Due to afaster national growth rate than predicted

by government, the Department of Edu-cation needs to limit the number of stu-dents taken in at universities until 2007.In the future we will have to focus moreon quality students and differentiatedgrowth in particular programme areas, said Prof. Fourie.

The incorporation of Qwaqwa and theBloemfontein campus of Vista also hadan impact on the growth of student num-bers at the UFS. The Qwaqwa campusmust grow for it to be financially viable.

Graduation milestone for theUFS Qwaqwa Campus

On 9 October 2004 the MandelaHall at the University of theFree State Qwaqwa campus

was filled to capacity as the com-munity gathered to celebrate thegraduation of 177 students. Amongthe degrees awarded were one doc-torate, eight master’s, 31 honours and46 bachelor’s degrees. In additionthere were also 91 diplomas awarded.

Qwaqwa campus made historywhen Dr Motseki Hlatshwayo was thefirst person from the campus toreceive a doctorate in the Natural andAgricultural Sciences. This is a causefor celebration and attests to theresilience of staff and students as wellas the commitment and support of theimmediate community for the con-tinued offering of relevant post-graduate training on the Qwaqwacampus, said Prof. Peter Mbati,Campus Head.

In his welcome speech, Prof.Mbati, said: “A special day like today isnormally only possible due to the de-

dication and commitment of manydifferent individuals. It is therefore onlyfitting that we salute the parents andguardians for all your sacrifices to en-sure that your children receive the besteducation.”

At the graduation ceremony are from the left Prof. Peter Mbati, Mrs Busiswa Tshabalala, Director ofEducation, Thabo Mofutsanyane District and UFS Council member and Prof. Frederick Fourie: UFS Rector.

The first Deputy President of theSRC, Mr Tello Motloung, also addressedthe graduandi. “The year 2004 calls forcelebration, as we are not only cele-brating ten years of democracy but alsoyour achievements,” he said.

Mr Malherbe said that the UFS hasmade a strong case for further growthat the Qwaqwa campus to theDepartment of Education.

The positive side of the picture isthat we are moving the focus fromquantity to quality students and we areoptimising students’ opportunities tosucceed, said Prof. Fourie. This theUFS hopes to accomplish throughextended programmes with develop-ment modules, tutor systems andother support mechanisms.

Mr Malherbe said effective enroll-ment planning has to create a balancebetween admitting new first year stu-dents and the through flow and outflowof current students, i.e. enrollment plan-ning has to take account of the numberof students who will graduate, who willdrop out of the system and who willremain in the system, in order to deter-mine how many new students can thusbe admitted to the system. The propor-tion of undergraduate and postgraduatestudents and the number of students inthe various faculties also play animportant role in enrollment planning.

The UFS is utilising the registrationprocess as a mechanism to manageenrollment planning. “We will be moredisciplined and keep to deadlines forregistrations,” said Prof. Fourie. “After 30November 2004 only applications whichare in accordance with our planningparameters will be considered,” she said.

Through extended programmes andcounseling services the UFS tries tocreate a learning environment to addquality and prevent a drop in standards.“We want to make higher education ac-cessible to all. Although it makes moredemands on human and financial resour-ces, we are committed to face the chal-lenge of creating a balance betweenequity, redress and quality,” said Prof.Fourie.

The enrollment planning processshould not have a dramatic impact onstaff, said Prof. Fourie. Although thegrowth phase of the UFS is something ofthe past, the success of the turn-aroundstrategy has given us a stronger basis onwhich to build. “We are now ready toenter the consolidation phase where wewill focus on quality.”

The 2004/2005 StudentRepresentative Council (SRC)of the UFS is planning a reunionfor old SRC members on 5February 2005. The reunion willform part of the closing activitiesof the UFS centenary. stimulated luminescence dating from a dune cordon near Sedgefield.

The UK based Leverhulme Trust hasawarded a research grant of£29 000 (approximately R350 000)

for collaborative research into the geo-morphic evolution of dune systems, coas-tal aeolianites and sea level change alongSouth Africa’s southern and westerncoasts, said Prof. Peter Holmes from theDepartment of Geography at the UFS.

Dr Mark Bateman of the University ofSheffield is the principal grant holder, andProf. Holmes is the principal South Afri-can collaborator. Prof. Holmes introducedDr Bateman to the Southern Cape duringfieldwork in 2001 and the two publishedtheir initial findings that revealed dunedevelopment associated with sea-levelchanges over the last 200 000 years.

The bulk of the grant will cover labo-ratory costs at the University of Sheffieldand fieldwork in South Africa. A betterunderstanding of how, and when, SouthAfrica’s coastal environments have evol-ved will provide a context for archaeolo-gists who are reconstructing the origins ofmodern humans in the Southern Caperegion.

time out with...

Elizabeth NchapiFinance is her passion

UFS present at International Geological Congress

The International Excursion Group consisted of representatives from China, England, Finland, Israel, South Africa, Turkey and Japan. The tour leader was Aral Okay from

Turkey. Prof. Van Der Westhuizen is third from left and Dr Collins is far right.

Who is Ms Nchapi, I asked?Without hesitation or fear ofrevealing too much about

herself, or her age, she said: “I wasborn in Mount Fletcher, a small town inthe Eastern Cape, where I matriculated.I am 39 years old and married withthree kids named Palesa, Motebangand Molapo. My first name is Moipone, but with four Moipone’s on campuseverybody calls me Elizabeth.”

Holding the fort in the FinanceDivision at the Qwaqwa campus is abig responsibility, Elizabeth said. “I wasalways passionate about finance and allmy life I worked in the financedepartment.” Elizabeth equipped herselfto enhance her skills and knowledge of

this passion of hers. In 1983 she did adiploma in Commerce at the thenUniversity of the North campus inQwaqwa and later in 2001, at the sameinstitution, she enrolled for herB.Comm. degree. Her hard work paidoff and in May this year Elizabethobtained her B.Comm. Honours degreein Accounting.

Elizabeth started working at theQwaqwa campus ten years ago. Sincethen she witnessed many changes, butdue to her positive nature, all for thegood. “When I joined Finance in 1994 Iwas the first black person in that office. After 1999, when management wassuspended, a number of people left theuniversity, giving only 24 hours’ notice.

In 2001 I was asked to assist and wasappointed as acting head of theFinance Division. It was reallychallenging because in a short periodof time I had to sit down and learn thejob by either consulting those peoplewho left or with the financial advisorthat was appointed by the universityadministrator.

A normal day at the office forElizabeth starts with a prayer, whereafter she writes in her diary. Now,being ready to face all challengescoming her way, she will check her e-mails, open the cashier’s offices andtend to the normal business of the day. After work Elizabeth will leave the officeto attend gym and on Tuesdays shelikes attending church where she is partof a group who prays and gives adviceto the terminally ill.

The community of Qwaqwa is veryimportant to Elizabeth. “People in ourcommunity are looking for a betterservice. Although the Qwaqwa campusis not the same as the other twocampuses, because of its uniqueenvironment with different needs, weare in the position to deliver a higherstandard of service to our community. Itis not an easy process but throughcommunication, hard work and anattitude of “we can” we will be able toprovide a quality service,” she said.

Dr Wayne Colliston and Profs.Willem van der Westhuizen andDerik de Bruiyn from the Depart-

ment of Geology presented scientificpapers on their research to a multi-na-tional audience and participated in twointernational excursions at the 32nd In-ternational Geological Congress in Flo-rence. Dr Colliston also participated in aworkshop and field excursion on “Fluidflow in faults”.

Prof. De Bruiyn attended the Inter-national Excursion to examine the geo-logy and volcanism of the volcanic is-lands and volcanoes of Stromboli, Lipariand Vulcano. Dr Colliston and Prof. vander Westhuizen participated in theexcursion to NW Turkey, to examinehigh pressure metamorphic rocks.

Klippies in my skoen

Dr. Jan-Albert van den Berg het ‘ninterkulturele forum oor “HIV/Aids, Vio-lence and Children: A Ground-Up Prac-tical Theology from Atteridgeville andKatlehong, South Africa” aangebied metsy besoek aan Duitsland en Hongarye.

Met dieselfde seminaar deel hy nogSuid-Afrikaanse perspektiewe met sywerkswinkel oor “The river of violence -

Perspectives on Violence from a PrivateMaximum Security Prison in SouthAfrica”.

Jy is ook gelukkig as 'n posstukby jou uitkom. Dit kan tot meer astwee weke duur net om op die kam-pus by die regte persoon uit te kom.

Ek bekommer my ook oor rekeningevan verskaffers.
