Spring 2004 Volume 15 No. 1 Entrepreneurship Ran Deep in the Heart of Tex as Entrepreneurship ran deep during the 2004 USASBE conference in Dallas in January. In what surely was one of the best conferences in the history of USASBE, there were easily enough sessions for those who wanted to spend their entire time on a single facet of entrepreneurship. Likewise, there was a plethora of unique topics for those who simply wanted a taste of everything related to entrepreneurship or small business. A total of 540 participants, the largest number in USASBE history, gathered at the Westin Galleria for excellent plenary sessions, competitive paper sessions, and workshops. In addition, more than 80 members attended pre- conference sessions put on by the Direct Selling Education Foundation and by SIFE, CEO, and GSEA. The 2003-04 Board met on Wednesday evening, and the 2004-05 Board met on Sunday to conduct important USASBE business, including making the decision to share our 2005 conference with the Small Business Institute®. As always, there were a bevy of awards given for best papers and best programs. See page two for a list of award winners. A new award, the Max S. Wortman, Jr./USASBE Award for Lifetime Achievement in Entrepreneurship, was created, and the initial award was presented to Max. A total of 129 papers and workshops were presented. The International Division had the most papers, 13, followed by nine each for the Entrepreneurship Education, Individual Entrepreneurship, Corporate Entrepreneurship, and Technology Entrepreneurship divisions. Entrepreneurship Education led in the number of workshops, with 21, including several award track workshops. Thanks go to Dianne Welsh, Program Chair; Shawn Carraher, Competitive Papers Chair; and Beth Teal, Workshops Chair, for an excellent program. This year brought a significant increase in the number of sponsors and exhibitors. There were 21 sponsors, including three new ones, and more than 20 exhibitors, including four new ones. Thanks go to Joan Gillman, Ed Rogoff, and Janet Nixdorff, and the entire board, for their help in obtaining this support. USASBE does not rest on its laurels, however. Plans were announced for next year’s conference in sunny Indian Wells, California. See page 6 for the details. A new award established this year bears the same name as its inaugural recipient—Max S. Entrepreneurship Ran Deep in the Heart of Texas Entrepreneurship ran deep during the 2004 USASBE conference in Dallas in January. It is hard to believe that nearly three months have gone by since I saw many of you during our annual conference in Dallas. Tempus fugit! By all accounts, the 2004 conference was a resounding success. Please join me in congratulating the 2004 Program Chair Dianne Welsh, as well as Joan Gillman, Jean Von Allmen, and the many volunteers that made

the conference such a huge success. One of the themes that I mentioned in my inaugural remarks upon becoming President

of USASBE in Dallas was focused on the value of our members. It is the incredibly strong membership base that makes USASBE such a tremendous organization. Your active membership drives the conference content, comprises the professional network that is so valuable to our profession, and is the source of volunteers for the many projects and initiatives that propel USASBE in its leadership role in small, entrepreneurial, and family business education. In this Liaison, you will see the complete list of the elected officers of USASBE. Please contact them with your ideas, suggestions, and interests. Last year, as President-Elect, I led the important strategic planning process for USASBE. We identified three key areas that drive USASBE: the members themselves, the conference, and member benefits. The front line that makes these three areas work for USASBE is the divisions. At the closing Board meeting in Dallas, we had all the officers present

with the exception of one Division VP. This was an exceptional turnout. I encourage you to be involved in the divisions in which you have an interest. Submit a paper or workshop, or volunteer to be a reviewer, session chair, and/or a discussant. Howard Van Auken, the 2005 Program Chair, greatly values your participation. A fourth area that came out of last year’s strategic planning session is particularly noteworthy – the emphasis on entrepreneurship across the curriculum. This is an extremely timely thrust, and entrepreneurship educators are poised to take a leadership role in promoting entrepreneurship (individual, corporate, and social) across the campus. To this end, I encourage you to reach out to your colleagues across campus and even to neighboring schools and invite them to come to the 2005 meeting in Indian Wells, California. With the return to a joint meeting with the Small Business Institute®, the 2005 conference promises to be one of the most dynamic yet. Visit the USASBE web site (www.usasbe.org) to gather more information on scholarship opportunities that are available to new attendees, thanks to the generosity of the Coleman Foundation. For smaller schools, the 2005 conference will also feature the continuation of the Coleman Elevator Grants. Last year in Dallas, the Coleman Foundation and the John E. and Jeanne T. Hughes Foundation gave $125,000 to 25 schools to promote entrepreneurship on their campuses. I invite you to join us as we continue our entrepreneurial journey!

Max Wortman received the first Max S. Wortman/USASBE Award for Lifetime Achievement in Entrepreneurship, named in his honor, at the USASBE 2004 meeting in Dallas. He received an inscribed crystal bowl and a lengthy standing ovation from the crowd. Years from now, someone will be presenting that year’s Max S. Wortman, Jr./USASBE Award for Lifetime Achievement in Entrepreneurship to a deserving person, and a young academician will ask, “So, who was this guy Max Wortman?” And the presenter might respond, “Max was a unique individual who made major contributions to entrepreneurship as well as a number of other disciplines. Beyond that, Max was a great guy. They broke the mold when they made Max.” To get an idea of who Max Wortman is, consider first the contributions for which he is NOT being honored with an award named after him. He has taught strategic management, introduction to research, human resource management, social issues in management, women in management, diversity, and two courses in agribusiness management. He also happens to have taught entrepreneurship. He has written seven books – four in employee relations and three in management. In addition, he has written 24 book chapters on topics including ethics, managing the not-for-profit organization, strategic management, women in management, managing business schools, and emerging Chinese infrastructure in agriculture markets. He has chaired or served

on scores of doctoral dissertation committees at four different universities. Max Wortman graduated from Iowa State University in 1956 with a degree in civil engineering. He finished his Ph.D. in business administration in 1962 at the University of Minnesota with emphases in industrial relations, management, labor economics, and statistics. His major teaching assignments have been at the University of Minnesota, University

of Iowa, University of Massachusetts, Virginia Polytechnic Institute, University of Tennessee, and now back at Iowa State University where it all began 40 years ago. He is currently a Distinguished Professor in Business at Iowa State. USASBE is honoring him for his lifetime achievement in the field of entrepreneurship. Among his 150 or so published articles and papers, at least 35 have been in the entrepreneurship and small business field. His first, “Boards of Directors

in Small Corporations,” was published in 1984 in the American Journal of Small Business (now Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice). Max has been president of the Academy of Management and has served in nearly every possible administrative position in the Academy of Management, the Midwest Academy of Management, and the AOM entrepreneurship division. He has served in numerous positions in the International Council for Small Business and its predecessor, the National Small Business Development Association; was a member of the Small Business Institute Directors’ Association; and is a founding member of the U.S. Association of Small Business and Entrepreneurship (USASBE). He has served in nearly every position in USASBE, including president in 1986-87 and historian since 1992. Max has been the editor or associate editor of the Academy of Management Journal, Family Business Review, Decision Sciences, and Management Science. He has served on the editorial review boards of 14 journals. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Management, USASBE, Decision Sciences Institute, and the Southern Management Association. His list of awards and honors is extensive. Finally, he and his wife Cora have been married for many years and enjoy several grandchildren.

Come for fun in the sun in California at USASBE 2005 - Entrepreneurship in a Diverse WorldCome and enjoy the sunshine at the Renaissance Esmeralda Resort & Spa in Indian Wells, California. The resort is just down the road from Palm Springs. Can you think of a better place to spend a few days in mid-January? Especially those of us who live in the north. Think about the options – zero degrees and snow in Buffalo or 80 degrees and sunshine in Indian Wells. Add to that an exciting conference, and you have the prospects for a wonderful time at a world class conference. The 2005 USASBE/SBI National Conference has the theme “entrepreneurship in a diverse world.” It is a timely theme choice as we see changes in the demographic make-up of our population, the excitement of

global business, and the challenges of international relations we face today. Within that theme, papers and workshops are encouraged in any of USASBE’s eleven professional divisions – see page four for a list of the divisions – or on other topics of interest to USASBE members. The 2005 conference marks the return of SBI to the USASBE conference. This promises an even more diverse set of attendees as well

as a greater variety of papers and workshops. Howard Van Auken is the overall conference chair. Assisting him are competitive papers chair Shawn Carraher, workshop/symposium chair Jon Richards, welcoming committe chair Thaddeus McEwen, exhibits chair Janet Nixdorff, proceedings editor Pat Dickson, spouse’s program chair Carolyn Gough, and golf outing chair Stan Mandel. The team promises a plethora of excellent sessions that meet the interests of USASBE members. The deadline for submitting papers and workshop/symposium proposals is August 13, 2004. Electronic submissions are encouraged. See the USASBE web site for more details.
