Quiz/Test Procedure 1.  Clear your desk of everything

except a pencil 2.  Noise level 0 3.  Keep eyes on your own quiz/test

at all times 4.  Raise your hand to ask a

question 5.  Flip your quiz over and put your

head down when you’re finished

Correcting Quizzes ! 1.  Use a pen or highlighter to

correct quizzes 2.  Sign your name at the bottom 3.  Mark incorrect answers with an

“X” and correct answers with a “✓”

4.  Put a total score at the top +__

Unit Project – Dynamic Earth •  You will need to create a model of the dynamic earth –

this can be a 3D model or a detailed drawing.

•  You will also need to include a written paragraph/report for each section of the dynamic earth: geosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere

•  Read over the rubric, and then decide what kind of model you would like to make

Unit Project – Dynamic Earth • Note – this project is worth 100 test points

•  If you receive a 70% or higher on your project, you will not be required to complete the Ch. 3 Test.

•  If you fail to turn in the project, you will be required to complete the Ch. 3 test

Do-Now: “Brainstorm Week 4” Title your paper “Brainstorm Week 4”

1.  Write down today’s FLT 2.  List the layers of earth, in order. 3.  Which layer makes up most of Earth’s

mass? 4.  What is the relationship between

tectonic plates and where earthquakes occur? (Hint: read p. 63 if you forgot)

Brainstorm Protocol • Goal: generate the longest list possible • Quantity > Quality •  Take turns clockwise – ONE answer per

person, and NO skipping • You can help your classmate think of an

answer, but you cannot tell them an answer • Everyone must have the SAME EXACT list • Pencils/Pens MUST be down when time is up

Brainstorm Protocol •  Identify the person in your group with the

most siblings • This person will be starting • Number your paper underneath your do-

now

Brainstorm Protocol •  You will have one minute and thirty

seconds to generate answers • Group with the longest list = +5 dojo

points each •  Your topic is….

Brainstorm Protocol • Tell me everything you know about Earth

Brainstorm Protocol • Count up your answers….

Standard •  HS-ESS2-1: Develop a model to illustrate how Earth’s

internal and surface processes operate at different spatial and temporal scales to form continental and ocean-floor features

FLT • I will be able to describe the

composition of Earth’s atmosphere by completing Atmosphere Notes

Notes:

• Noise level 0 • Copy down all bolded ideas • Raise your hand to question/comment • Be prepared to pair-share

Recall: last time we talked about the geosphere

Why do planes fly as much as 10 km above the ground?

Most commercial planes fly ~33,000 ft because the air is MUCH less dense. Thus, the planes experience less

drag, require less fuel, and have less turbulence.

Composition of the Atmosphere

What is the atmosphere? • The atmosphere = contains all of the gases

on Earth, arranged in layers •  Some of the air is oxygen, which we breathe, but there are

also many other gases, dust particles, and even some water vapor mixed into the air.

7&

Atmosphere Gases in the Atmosphere

• Gases include nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, and more

• Gases are constantly cycled through the atmosphere and earth – We remove oxygen when we breathe in, and

we add carbon dioxide when we breathe out – Volcanic eruptions add gases – Plants add oxygen via photosynthesis

9/10/15&

8&

Gases in the Atmosphere

• Nitrogen " most abundant gas in atmosphere – Enters through volcanic eruptions and decaying plants/animals

• Oxygen – Enters via plant production

Gases in the Atmosphere •  Other – argon, carbon dioxide, methane, water vapor, etc

Layers of the Atmosphere

4 Main Layers (based on temperature changes) in

the atmosphere:

1. Tropsphere 2. Mesosphere 3. Thermosphere 4. Stratosphere

9&

Troposphere •  Troposphere = Lowest

layer •  As altitude increases,

temperature decreases • Most life and weather

occurs here •  Dense layer •  Up to ~18km

Stratosphere •  Stratosphere = 2nd

layer •  ~18-50km • Ozone (O3) layer

protects us from UV radiation, but also causes the temperatures to rise as altitude increases

Mesosphere • Mesophere = 3rd layer • Extends up to ~80km

above surface • Coldest layer

– There are few molecules (inc ozone) to warm the air

– Carbon dioxide also absorb heat form other molecules

Thermosphere •  Almost “outer space” •  Absorbs solar

radiation, resulting in extremely high temperatures – Measured above 2,000

degrees! – However, it would not

feel “hot” because the air is so thin and heat does not transfer well

Page 10: Env Sci Week 4 PPT€¦ · 2& Quiz/Test Procedure 1. Clear your desk of everything except a pencil 2. Noise level 0 3. Keep eyes on your own quiz/test at all times 4. Raise your hand

9/10/15&

10&

Thermosphere •  ~100 to 400 km •  Air is very thin here

heat does not transfer easily

•  Northern lights occur (aurora borealis)

•  The International Space Station orbits in this layer

Thermosphere •  Two Sublayers: 1.  Ionosphere:

presence of ions allow for radio wave communication

2.  Exosphere: Atoms and molecules can escape into space here

The Greenhouse Effect • Greenhouse effect = Warming of Earth’s

surface/lower atmosphere due to gases in the atmosphere that absorb and reradiate infrared radiation trapping heat on Earth

• Without the greenhouse effect, Earth would be too cold for life to exist.

The Greenhouse Effect Pair-Share-Respond 1.  Define “atmosphere” 2.  What are the layers of the atmosphere,

from lowest to highest? 3.  Which layer contains our ozone layer? 4.  Which layer is the most dense? 5.  Explain, briefly, what is meant by the

term “greenhouse effect”.

CW 1.  Active Reading 3.3 2.  Finish all binder assignments 3.  Work on project
