2014 MONTHLY CONSTRUCTION STORM WATER OPERATOR/SOIL EROSION INSPECTORTRAINING, VARIOUS LOCATIONS, MICHIGAN. The DEQ Water Resources Division will behosting training and exams for Certification as a Construction Storm Water Operator. These half-daysessions will include a training video outlining inspector/certified operator requirements, bestpractices for soil erosion and sedimentation control, and common compliance problems found on

construction sites. Not all information on the test is included in the training, so participants areexpected to have read and understand the information presented in the “Certified Storm WaterOperator and Soil Erosion and Sedimentation Control Inspector/Comprehensive Manual” chapters1-5. The training will be followed by a fifty question, multiple choice exam. A score of 70% is requiredto pass and become certified. JUNE 2014 WASTE CHARACTERIZATION WORKSHOPS, VARIOUS LOCATIONS, MICHIGAN. The DEQ ishosting two workshops to explain the process of characterizing business waste. The WasteCharacterization Workshop will expand on the basic concepts and principles provided in theIntroductory Webinars and the Waste sessions featured at the upcoming 2014 MichiganEnvironmental Compliance Conference.  This half-day workshop will focus on hazardous and liquidindustrial waste and will provide information on the basic waste characterization concepts, includingpractical details to use when evaluating any waste. Environmental, health, and safety professionals

at small quantity and large quantity generators of hazardous waste and anyone who manages wastefor their business or institution will benefit from attending this training. Topics will include: point oforigination or when a waste first becomes subject to regulation; hazardous waste exclusions, wherethey are cited, and when you can use them; how to determine whether your waste meets the landdisposal restrictions, needs to be treated before disposal, and how to determine the underlyinghazardous constituents in your waste; how to determine when a listing applies and when generatortreatment is an option; and how to collect random samples, what analysis is required, and when youcan use less costly analysis method. Although solid waste will not be covered in the presentations,technical staff will be available on site. Compliance stack testing is an integral part of many airregulations and Permits, however, the details of this important task are often challenging to navigate.Please join the East Michigan Chapter of the Air & Waste Management Association for an interactiveand comprehensive Workshop designed to tackle the topic of stack testing in its entirety, includingwhy a test is performed, what is required of the different parties involved (and what theirexpectations should be), and what is actually measured and why. Additionally, a discussion on“Lessons Learned” will be presented. Mr. Tom Maza, DEQ Test Supervisor, and Mr. Mark Grigereit,Principle Engineer – Stack Testing, of DTE Energy, will be conducting this important Workshop.Together these gentlemen will provide insight from both a regulatory and industry perspective. Mr.Maza has 20 years of experience planning, observing and reviewing air emission tests for theMichigan AQD, and Mr. Grigereit has over 25 years of relevant field testing experience. Space is

WEBINAR: MICHIGAN’S NEW WETLAND MITIGATION BANKING FUND PROGRAM. In an effortto further promote wetland banking in Michigan, the legislature has enacted a new innovativeapproach to increase the establishment of wetland banks by developing a Wetland Mitigation BankFunding Program (WMBF). The WMBF provides grants and low interest loans to eligiblemunicipalities interested in developing a wetland mitigation bank. The primary purpose of the

DEQ COMPREHENSIVE SOIL EROSION TRAINING AND EXAMS, WARREN, MICHIGAN. TheDEQ Water Resources Division will be conducting a training and exam for individuals who have valid

Construction Storm Water Operator Certificates and work for Part 91 Agencies where the individualmay have soil erosion and sedimentation control plan review and design responsibilities. Thetraining will cover the required components of a soil erosion and sedimentation control plan, the soilerosion and sedimentation control law, an overview of common best management practices for soilerosion and sedimentation control, and an exercise in plan review in design. Not all information inthe exam is covered in the training, so participants are expected to have read and understand theinformation presented in the “Certified Storm Water Operator and Soil Erosion and SedimentationControl Inspector/Comprehensive Manual.” The exam consists of a forty question, multiple choiceexam. A score of 70% is required to pass and receive a certificate of training.
