‘Math evaNgelist’ greg taNg visits loWer school

The Episcopal Collegiate Lower School was pleased to welcome Greg Tang as a special guest on May 6 and 7. Mr. Tang is well-known among educators for his passion for math. With degrees from Harvard and NYU, Tang refers to himself as a sort of ‘math evangelist.’

At a parent workshop May 6 in the Braunfisch-Stella Boyle Smith Library, Tang talked to parents about creative ways to

foster computation and mental math skills and abstract thinking needed for higher math.

Tang is the author of eight books, including the New York Times bestseller, The Grapes of Math. He is also the creator of Kakooma, a series of fun math puzzles that are designed to strengthen computation and mental math skills.

Our Lower School students, parents, faculty and staff were so enriched by Mr. Tang’s visit. We thank Dr. Missy and Mr. Bobby Graham for underwriting Mr. Tang’s visit.

The Episcopal Collegiate School Orchestra received the highest scores possible at the Regional Performance Assessment Concert held this year at Maumelle High School. Episcopal competed against other Class 3A schools in the contest and received perfect ratings - or straight 1’s - on all of their performances. The contest requires students to perform prepared pieces of music, as well as sight-read and perform pieces selected by the judges “on the spot” with little time to prepare.

McGinnis was the high point scorer of the meet. The Wildcats were also led by Senior Adam Angel whose 5th place finish in the 100m and 200m and strong leg in the 4x400m relay helped secure the win.

As individual State Champions, McGinnis, Noland, Wilbourn, and Ekdahl all qualified to compete in the Meet of Champions. In addition, they along with William McCastlain were named to the All-State Team.

The girls team also fared well at State, led by Senior Catherine Babin’s 8th place finish in the 100 hurdles and 3rd place finish in the 300 hurdles. Sophomore Shelby Powers placed 10th in the 1600 and 7th in the 3200. One of the biggest highlights of the night came from freshman Sally Barnes, who out sprinted a talented field to capture 3rd place finish in the 800-meter run.

Episcopal Collegiate School parents and friends turned out in large numbers on March 9 for the School's biennial Wild Game Dinner. Guests dressed in casual camo-style attire and feasted on a smorgasbord of wild game, including quail, whole hog, duck, deer, wild boar and chicken. Our sincere thanks to the dads who procured, cooked and served the wild game! 8th graders coMplete iNteNsive capstoNe proJect

Arkansas’ role in the past, present, and future was the theme of a year-long capstone project undertaken by Episcopal Collegiate School 8th graders. The active learning project included three parts that required hours of planning and preparation – a conference, community service, and a field trip.

Students were assigned to one of five committees that met regularly

throughout the year to plan, organize, secure speakers, and arrange for travel.

Students hosted The Capstone Conference at the School on Tuesday, April 30 with the theme of “Arkansas’ Role in the 21st Century: Influenced by the Past and Leading the Future.”

Speakers included many business and political leaders, including Skip Rutherford, Dean of the Clinton School of Public Service; Warren Stephens, CEO of Stephens, Inc.; Dr. John A. Kirk, Chair of the History Department at UALR; Mireya Reith, founder of Arkansas United Community Coalition; and Dr. Robert Entzminger, Provost at Hendrix College.

After the conference, students enjoyed traveling to Fayetteville to take in the Arkansas Razorbacks vs. Missouri State baseball game. Then, it was on to War Eagle Caverns and the Fay Jones Architecture School at the University of Arkansas. Their last day on the road was spent exploring the beautiful Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art.

To fulfill the community service component of the project, students spent afternoons during testing week volunteering at Dunbar Gardens and Our House Shelter.

Student-directed curriculum committees created assignments for students to complete before, during and after each major component of the project. Assessments were included as part of students’ history grade.

Special thanks go to the 8th grade teaching team and to Katie Robinson who was instrumental in helping students with webpage design, online t-shirt ordering, and creation of the final chapel presentation.

The 2013 Creative Writing Class presented Reverie, Volume 5 in a chapel program on May 10. The 40-page publication of student poetry, prose, artwork, and photography showcases work from every grade in the school. A highlight of the magazine this year is the cover art, created by one of our youngest students – Pre-K3 student Emily Stacks. Emily received the first printed copy of the publication.

Pre-K3 student Emily Stacks (center) is honored during Chapel for the original artwork she created for the cover of Reverie.

aNNual FuNd success

Technology is Episcopal Collegiate's future! The 2012-2013 Annual Fund drive funded a school-wide technology initiative. The Annual Fund drive was chaired by Michelle and Allen Carney; parents of Jack, 8th grade and Logan, 5th grade. The committee of 46 had two important goals: to raise $375,000 AND to get our families to PARTICIPATE! The excitement and willingness of our families to raise the bar made the difference in this year’s Annual Fund Drive! The Chairs and Committee raised over $408,000 with 55% Parent Participation! Our sincere appreciation to the parents, faculty, staff and friends who gave to the Annual Fund this past year, and to our amazing Annual Fund Chairs, Allen and Michelle Carney!
