Your AdventureThe Way of the Gods or Via degli Dei, connects two of Italy’s most important art cities, Bologna and Florence. Walk on an ancient Roman road from Piazza Maggiore in the heart of Bologna to Piazza della Signoria, the main square of Florence and literally the Cradle of the Renaissance. This ancient way is steeped in history and legends and owes its suggestive name to the mountains along the route: Mt. Adone, Mt. Giove, Mt. Venere and Mt. Lunario. It joined the town of Felsina (the Etruscan name of Bologna) to Faesulae, the original town of Florence. In Roman times the route was re‑baptised as “Flaminia Militare” and paved with large flagstones still visible on the route today. The area has a surprising variety of natural habitats: the Reno River valley is dominated by Pliocene era spurs and a series of rocky sandstone crags while higher up, huge beechwoods shade your way as you gently ascend to the Piana del Mugello. Small medieval villages and solitary farm houses dot the hills. Looking down from high up in the Mugello hills you are rewarded with your first glimpse of Florence, before you descend on foot to this elegant city on the banks of the Arno.

Fundraising OptionsThere are a number of ways you can approach your fundraising:1.Simply pay for it yourself, as you would any other holiday (although this will be a LOT more memorable than any other holiday!). If you do so, $2,500 of this cost will be tax deductible.2.Fundraise some or all of the amount. When you do so, any donations that others make towards your challenge will be tax deductible. If you’d like to fundraise for your trip but don’t know where to start, our professional fundraisers will provide you with the support and resources to make it easy and stress‑free.

Online Fundraising PortalWhen fundraising for the charity donation component of this challenge you must seek permission of your charity before beginning to fundraise in their name. The team at Epworth will be in touch with you upon registration to give you the details of the online fundraising page and permission to fundraise. The minimum fundraising target is $2,500 per person. You can do it!

Detailed ItineraryDAY 1 Arrive BolognaArrive in Bologna airport and transfer to the hotel downtown. Bologna is a city with many attractions so to stretch your legs, once checked in we go on a 2hrs guided walking tour of the city: walking across the 7 chapels of the Santo Stefano Basilica, admiring the Torre degli Asinelli (“the Donkeys’ Tower”), and the wonderful porticoed streets, Piazza Maggiore and Piazza Grande. For tonight’s dinner try the Lasagna, It local to the region. Overnight Hotel University.meals: D

DAY 2 Walk Bologna to Sasso Marconi - 20 kmOne last stroll through Bologna as you walk from Piazza Maggiore, the heart of the city to the Portico di San Luca, built in 1674: this is the longest covered street in the world, 4 km dominated by 666 arches, which extends all the way to the Basilica of San Luca. You walk across Parco Tolon where the Casalecchio lock-gate has been managing the flow of the Reno River into the city of Bologna for 800 years. You reach your accommodation in Sasso Marconi, named in honour of the Nobel Prize winning scientist Guglielmo Marconi who was born here. Overnight Ca Vecchia.meals: B,L,D

DAY 3 Walk Badolo to Monzuno - 16 kmAfter breakfast you take a short transfer to Badolo, where we stop to visit a local botanical/herb garden where medicinal and curative plants are lovingly grown. From where we set off to Monzuno. The star of today’s walk is the Contrafforte Pliocenico, a rocky bastion that rose from shallow seas during the Pliocene age (2-4 million years ago) – the proofs of which are to be found in the fossils of ancient shells still embedded everywhere in the local rocks.Along the route you encounter sandy trails that climb to the edge of the abyss along a spectacular path that assends to the top of Mount Adone, with its characteristic stone towers. Your destination is Monzuno, where the local charcuterie meats are well known and locally protected the Slow Food association. Overnight Montevenere.meals: B,L,D

DAY 4 Walk Monzuno to Bruscoli - 19 kmThis section is especially beautiful as you walk through immense green fields and chestnut woods. At your feet are Roman paving stones of the “Flaminia Militare”, the Roman road that used to link Bologna to Arezzo; you will see traces of the Roman passage still visible on the stones to Pian di Balestra, the regional border between Emilia and Tuscany. Today’s destination is Bruscoli, Here a short transfer takes us to a nearby hotel. Overnight Una Poggio dei Medici, San Piero.meals: B,L,D

DAY 5 Walk Bruscoli to Sant’Agata - 21 kmWe shuttle back to Bruscoli where we continue walking to the Passo della Futa, the biggest German cemetery in Italy, where more than 30.000 German soldiers were laid to rest. A place built for the war, now immersed in silence and peace. You then descend the Futa Pass. Monte Gazzaro, with its white cross, is the highest peak that we reach today; from here you will admire the breathtaking view of the Firenzuola valley and Mugello. A wide down-hill path leads you to Sant’Agata, with its museums dedicated to both sacred and peasant art. Here the bus waits for us to take us to the hotel. At this point you will begin to notice the scenery changing around you, a more typical Tuscan landscape. Overnight Una Poggio dei Medici, San Piero.meals: B,L,D

Responsible TravelThe natural environments that you’ll travel

through are fragile; the cultures and traditions precious and often the communities we pass through are reliant on tourism. It is our responsibility as visitors to minimise

the impact of our presence, protect what is precious and where we can leave a

positive impact. Learn how you can do this by downloading the Thoughtful

Traveller booklet from our website.

Adventure TravelBy its very nature Charity Challenges involve

an element of the unexpected. In remote and developing countries do not expect

standards you are used to at home. Remote areas are sometimes unpredictable and

itineraries may be altered. To get the most out of your adventure it is important that you are suitably fit, flexible, positive and eager to

take on all the challenges that arise. If you are uncertain about your suitability for this

trip we recommend that you speak with your charity representative or one of our team.

Important NoteThese trip notes represent the most current

information for this itinerary, and may supersede any other supplied information,

including but not limited to the itinerary and price. The itinerary should be seen as a guide

only. This itinerary may change at any time due to inclement weather, forces of nature

and other circumstances beyond our control.

DAY 6 From San Piero a Sieve to Olmo - 20 kmTransfer from the hotel to San Piero a Sieve. Leaving San Piero you continue towards the Castello del Trebbio, one of the residences of the Medici family, now a private property. This spot offers exceptional views that extend over the Mugello valley and Lake Bilancino. The route continues through large olive groves, continuously climbing to finally reach the Montesenario Monastery, which dominates the mountain with the same name - the view from here, encompassing the entire Mugello Valley, is the “gift from the gods” for your efforts! After visiting the monastery we will have a liquors tasting, of the different varieties the monks have been producing for over 150 years.Overnight Hotel Dino.meals: B,L,D

DAY 7 Walk Olmo to Fiesole, local bus to Florence - 10.5 kmYou are now on the outskirts of Florence, the end of your journey is at hand and there is much excitement! Walking through the steep cobbled streets we can see the well preserved Roman Amphitheatre, climb to reach the San Francesco Church and admire the view of Florence, before heading to lunch in a local trattoria on the main piazza of Fiesole. Boarding the local city bus we descend to the Renaissance city for the last triumphal steps and a guided walking tour of the historical centre. Overnight hotel Villa Royal.meals: B,L,D

A Typical DayThe day‑to‑day schedule provided above should be taken as a guide. Although we update our itineraries on a regular basis, to take into account such things as changes to third party programs and changes in the routing or availability of local transport, it is not possible to guarantee that the trip will run exactly as per the proposed itinerary. A variety of factors, including adverse weather conditions and difficulties with transportation, can lead to enforced changes. The trip leader will make any changes that are necessary.
