EQuIPHow do we know our KCAS lessons are REALLY hitting the target?1What is EQuIP?Educators Evaluating the Quality of Instructional ProductsKatrina and I are part of the 2nd cohort of the National Peer Review Panel around 75 people from around the nation-We have been trained in the Rubric and the Review process (Jan 2014) and now work in teams to review and score lessons and units submitted to Achieve.

2 Objectives Increase the supply of high quality instructional materials aligned to the CSSS that are available to elementary, middle, and high school teachers as soon as possible Build the capacity of educators to evaluate and improve where necessary the quality of instructional materials for use in their schools/classrooms

2OverviewInitiative of the American Diploma Project (ADP) Network designed to identify high-quality materials that communicate the instructional demands of the CCSS

EQuIP builds on the efforts of the Tri-State Collaborative and the rubrics and processes that have been developed collaboratively by Massachusetts, New York and Rhode Island

Includes teams from more than 20 states

ACHIEVEAMERICAN DIPLOMA PROJECTTri-State RubricMore info if you get questionsAchieve: Achieve is an independent, nonpartisan, nonprofit education reform organization dedicated to working with states to raise academic standards and graduation requirements, improve assessments, and strengthen accountability. Created in 1996 by a bipartisan group of governors and business leaders, Achieve is leading the effort to make college and career readiness a priority across the country so that students graduating from high school are academically prepared for postsecondary success.

AM Diploma Project: In 2005, Achieve launched the American Diploma Project (ADP) Network. The Network has grown to include 35 states educating 85 percent of all U.S. public school students. Through the ADP Network governors, state education officials, postsecondary leaders and business executives work together to improve postsecondary preparation by aligning high school standards, graduation requirements and assessment and accountability systems with the demands of college and careers.

Tri- State Rubric: Started in Oct 2010 Massachusetts- New York and Rhode Island formed a collaborative to being working on how to measure lessons and units, assessments and plans to the CCSS.

3How can we (educators) be sure the lessons we write or use, the materials we use or purchase are really, REALLY going to get at the heart of the Instructional Shifts required to meet The expectation of KCAS?Your compelling questionMore concisely- How do we assess the quality of our lessons?Ask a teacher if their lesson is aligned to the Core look at a unit yourselfIt SEEMS to be aligned, certain elements are there but is it REALLY getting to those instructional shifts?

When you hold a lesson or unit up to this kind of detailed discussion and scrutiny with an EQuIP rubric you not only learn how it is strongly aligned but also and maybe most importantly- how to improve the weak areas. It helps know you hit the target or if you missed, specific steps to make sure you hit it next time.

4 Alignment to the depth of the CCSS Key shifts in the CCSS Instructional supports Assessment 4The rubrics-Each of you has a copy of the EQuIP rubrics : ELA K-2, ELA 3-12, Math (K-12) and NGSS

The rubric organizes criteria that describe quality- highly aligned materials.

The four dimensions are 1) alignment 2) key shifts 3) instructional supports and 4) assessment

Take a few moments to look over one of the rubrics, the way the criteria are worded how the rubric is seeking evidence of the shifts in instruction.

5Rating Scale for Dimensions I, II, III, IV: 3: Meets most of the criteria in the dimension 2: Meets many of the criteria in the dimension 1: Meets some of the criteria in the dimension. 0: Does not meet the criteria in the dimension Overall Rating for the Lesson/Unit: E: Exemplar - Aligned and meets most to all of the criteria in dimensions II, III, IV (total 11 12) E/I: Exemplar if Improved Aligned and needs some improvement in one or more dimensions (total 8 10) R: Revision Needed Aligned partially and needs significant revision in one or more dimensions (total 3 7) N: Not Ready to Review Not aligned and does not meet criteria (total 0 2) Rating scalesTalk through scales

To date on the EQuIP website, there are just over 30 exemplars out of around 250 reviewed in a year.Goal is to reach 50 by end of July.6EQuIP more than an evaluation toolGuiding the development of lessons and units Evaluating existing lessons and units to identify improvements needed to align with the CCSS Providing educators criterion-based quality feedback on their lessons and unit plans Helping educators and instructional leaders foster a culture of collaboration on developing and sharing lesson and unit plans Building the capacity of educator and education leaders to gain a deeper understanding of the CCSS Informing vendors of criteria that will be applied in the evaluation of proposals and final products When educators use the Equip Rubrics and the Quality Review Process they get much more than an evaluation tool- like deconstructing standards, a lot of value is in the dynamic productive struggle.Key words in this process, Collaboration- Consistency, Equity, Efficacy and Effectiveness, Innovation7http://www.achieve.org/EQuIP
