ERDAS APOLLO Essentials Release Notes 7

The following improvements have been added to APOLLO Essentials in the April 2014

Service Pack,

GeoServices It is now possible to customise the Esri® GeoServices Mapservice to further enhance

delivery into Esri mapping applications,

1. Definition of custom Tile Matrix Set’s using a similar workflow to the OGC WMTS

protocol. A new esriTileMatrixSetsInfo.xml configuration file holds each definition

with rapid assignment to datasets via the Administration Console. The existing

“esricompatible” scheme is still available for trivial integration into Esri® Arcgis.com

Figure 1 - Custom GeoServices tiling scheme "esri_nzgd2000"

Note: GeoServices only supports one Tile Matrix Set per layer unlike WMTS

2. Administrators can now toggle the preferred image format for their tiled layer to

ensure the best performance or functionality is available to their users. Previously

the protocol would only deliver tiles in PNG24 format. Now for situations where

the basemap is imagery customers will see substantial performance improvements

using a more optimal format such as JPG or JPEG-XR.

Clustering

In the Service Pack we have simplified the steps required to create clustered configurations

of APOLLO Essentials using a shared configuration location that each node references. On

Windows, a new Post Install configuration page is presented to prompt for a clustered

configuration option.

Figure 2 - New cluster configuration option

For customers with only one production node, no further action is required but this an

important improvement for organizations wanting to easily scale out to additional nodes

with APOLLO Essentials. See User Guide for more information.

Miscellaneous Resolved critical issue when deploying on Servers with AMD CPU’s (such as

Opterons).

Resolved deployment issues when targeting custom installation locations. APOLLO

Essentials will now deploy into the target location with the optional “SDI

Components” deploying into C:\Program Files\Common Files\Intergraph\.

Added new Browser plugin option to cache secure ECWP url’s for improved display

performance.

ERDAS APOLLO Essentials Release Notes 9

Linux performance has improved by 25% over 14.0.

Fixed bugs relating to ECWP url’s with spaces in file name.

Resolved issue that prevented customisation with the default APOLLO Essentials

Portal instance.

Fixed minor OGC WMS compliance issues with Service Exception Reports.

The default band selection of 8-band NTF datasets is now consistent across all

protocols.

Fixed bilinear resampling bug which could introduce horizontal white lines into the

Browser Plugin.

Browser plugin ECWP “open” time has been optimised to improve the initial wait

time before receiving the data stream. The header blocks are now cached.

The Linux iwsctl script has been improved to handle error states from the

NCSImagewebServer daemon process and to give additional user feedback while

troubleshooting.

The ECWCheck utility now correctly flags ECW files with a valid file structure but

corrupt internal data blocks. This is commonly seen with truncated files.

Fixed internal thread problems delivering concurrent tiles from ALG input files

which could result in blank tiles being returned unexpectedly.

Performance improvements to ALG files with internal reprojection.

Corrected example access restriction to ecwpmgr in ImageWebServer.conf on

Linux.

Resolved security token issue that never released system handle which could be

seen on very large APOLLO Essentials deployments with process handles never

decreasing.

Fixed compatibility issue with images served over ECWP v2 with some blocks failing

to download.

Vastly improved projection mapping from GeoTIFF and IMG HFA files to EPSG

codes. Previously many header definitions would be assigned the generic

WGS84/LOCAL mapping when an EPSG could not be found. This lookup process is

now much more robust to detect subtle header differences in TIFF Keys and WKT

translation.

10 ERDAS APOLLO Essentials Release Notes

ERDAS APOLLO Essentials v14 builds on the substantial re-architecture delivered in v13

adding key functional, workflow and performance improvements.

NITF Image Streaming A major new feature for 2014 is the ability to stream NITF files with embedded JPEG2000

codestreams (JP2 or JPC) via APOLLO Essential’s ECWP and JPIP delivery protocols.

Leverages ERDAS IMAGINE NITF certified format reader for metadata retrieval and

codestream detection

Reads natively from existing NITF files without conversion or auxiliary files required

Detects Uncompressed or Compressed sub-dataset types and presents them to the

Administrator for simple delivery to users

Multiple code-streams within one file are supported

ISO JPIP Compliant stream for native support in all JPIP compatible clients

NITF files remain accessible via non streaming WMS, WMTS protocols for full

industry support

Full geo-referencing support

Full NITF Metadata accessible via ECWP using new Get UUID Box function

New Metadata web example to demonstrate parsing of UUID boxes to get NITF

specific or general RPC metadata

New Technology

Administration Console The existing console has been further improved with a variety of layout and workflow

improvements including,

Full drag and drop support from Windows Explorer directly into the Administration

Console. No more cumbersome Add File workflow, simply drop any supported file

format onto the console and APOLLO Essentials will do the rest

New dataset sort ability by name, title, scale hint to make administration tasks

even easier for large collections of datasets and make it easier for customers to

find your published data

Enhanced WMTS Custom tilematrixset selector. No need to guess Identifiers stored

in the tilematrixsetinfos.xml configuration file, all custom tile matrices are now

accessible within the UI for simplified management

12 ERDAS APOLLO Essentials Release Notes

Dataset Image Core, Resampling and Transform options now apply to all file types,

not just ECW or JPEG2000

Adding or deleting folders with hundreds of files will now complete 10-20x faster

than APOLLO Essentials 2013

Variety of other cosmetic UI improvements

ERDAS APOLLO Essentials Release Notes 13

ERDAS Image compressor A new standalone compression tool is now bundled with all ERDAS APOLLO 2014 licenses.

This new utility allows,

Basic conversion of existing raster formats to ECW or JPEG2000 compressed

outputs

Supports Windows and Linux platforms, command line and simple GUI provided

Transcoding only. For more advanced compression needs, ERDAS IMAGINE is

strongly recommended

Product is not available separately and requires existing APOLLO license codes to

be available

This packaging is designed to make it even easier for ERDAS APOLLO customers to

benefit from Intergraph’s wavelet compressed formats to enable image streaming

and improved performance that these formats provide

14 ERDAS APOLLO Essentials Release Notes

ECW Browser Plugin The existing Browser plugin now includes Hexagon’s MyVR mMap Browser plugin for full 3d

capabilities within Geospatial Portal. The MyVR plugin contains full support for ECWP so

customers can now view data streams from APOLLO Essentials in both 2d and 3d

environments

See Geospatial Portal 3D capabilities for more information

o The combined plugin must be installed to enable 3D viewing

A new MyVR Example is included

Background transparency has been added to Chrome plugin so background assets

are no longer obscured

Miscellaneous

Added support for GDAL VRT, Intergraph Raster and SPOT DIMAP file formats

Resolved bug preventing Geoservices from displaying in ESRI Silverlight or Flex API’s

Added default support for the European “InspireCRS84Quad” Tilematrixset

Resolved regression that broke dataset rotation in the ECW Browser Plugin

APOLLO Essentials 2013. Customers can perform an in-place upgrade of their

existing filelist configuration

Resolved floating point issues within the resampling code to produce higher

accuracy results

All datasets greater than 8bit type now default to a 99% Transformation / Clip.

Previously no transform was used resulting in poor quality output

Unicode character handling bug fixes
