Many in Birmingham will remember The BigHoot, an arts enterprise which took the cityby storm a couple of years ago when hun-dreds of statues of owls appeared all overthe city – with our local version housed inCentral Square.

Repeating The Big Hoot’s multi-award-winningformula, Birmingham Children’s Hospital Charityand Wild in Art are teaming up to present TheBig Sleuth. To most people, the word ‘sleuth’ means a pri-vate detective, but it’s also the collective nounfor a group of bears! Bizarre but true.Birmingham will bring both definitions togetherin the summer of the 2017 and the Sun Bear, the world’s smallest species of bear (now threat-ened with extinction) is the inspiration for abrand-new sculpture for this event. These incredible creatures are sure to inspirecreativity and generate plenty of fun for all yousleuth spotters on the trail! After which, thebears will be auctioned to raisevaluable funds for BirminghamChildren’s Hospital Charity.Local schools and other groupshave also been involved with

painting the bears to give ‘ownership’ of theproject to residents. The good news is that local community group,

Witton Lodge Community Association will onceagain be part of the scheme and have decidedto place their bear statue in the grounds of StBarnabas church! The extra good news is that they will launchtheir project at the Erdington Music Festival onSaturday July 22nd.Look out for more news about this great city-wide scheme.

www.thebigsleuth.co.uk

The Big Sleuth coming to Erdington!Witton Lodge initiative will see big bear in the High Street.

First of all, it sells very good qualityitems at rock bottom prices. There’slots to choose from including clothesfor children and adults, cups, platesand saucers, sheets and quilt covers, toys, games, books and DVDs. That isto say nothing of brand new partydresses.

If you’ve not been in to a charity shopfor a while, your memories may includea musty smell and slightly grubbylooking clothes. In the St Vincent dePaul (SVP) shop in Erdington there isnone of that. The shop is bright andfresh and the goods look almost asgood as new and are well displayed. The staff and volunteers in the shopare cheery and are happy to have achat if you’d like to.

The prices are surprising, a little girl’stop and trousers from Marks andSpencers for £2, or a brand new pairof strappy sandals, still in the box for£5, the children’s clothing starts at just50p and there are special offers aswell. We also have brand new ordesigner items at very good prices.

You might be wondering about thecharity which the shop is supporting. The SVP is an organisation where localpeople befriend other local people whoneed a bit of support. That supportmight be dropping in for a chat withsomeone who is housebound, callingin to see someone at a care home, visiting someone with mental healthproblems, or replacing a broken

washing machine for a family who arein need. The SVP is all about offeringfriendship, which can develop and lastfor many years. The SVP itself is a bigorganisation, but the help is given at alocal level by volunteers.

All charity shops are there to makesome money for a charity by sellingthings which are given to them free. The SVP shop does that of course, butif someone comes into the shop inneed of assistance, they can if theywant to leave their contact details andwill be visited by members of the localSVP group. That visit may lead to morevisits and a long friendship, or it may

just help to have a few visits at a timewhen things aren’t going well. SVPmembers are there for peoplewhenever they need them. The SVPshop is here to help.

Family run business, Russell’s FineFurnishers is to close after 17 years inErdington.

The decision was taken by the ownersafter much mooted plans fordevelopment of Central Squareshopping centre failed to materialiseleaving several shops empty. Siteowners New River Retail have in thepast submitted plans to turn vacantunits into multiple uses, including acinema, which have failed tomaterialise. In 2013 plans were also putforward to turn the site over to a newAsda development, which also did notgo forward.

Don Hollywood, the store’s managingdirector told us: “There has been nofurther development in Central Square, resulting in more empty units.

“I have been working with our MP, JackDromey, and Terry Guest, Business

Improvement District Manager, to tryand get investment, but withoutsuccess. Unfortunately, there will bestaff redundancies, and they are goodloyal employees who have been withus from the start. We will be closing thestore on August 31st, and will hold ourclosing down sale until then.”

The company has another store,Richardsons, in Swadlincote.

Erdington Police NewsBy Sergeant Rachel Darby

Hello!I am your NeighbourhoodSergeant for Erdington, and I have been in postnow for two months, and Ican say with great sinceri-ty that I have met somewonderful communityspirited people in thattime.

There really is alot going on in Erdington, from community cafesand road safety events, tofood banks and fundrais-ing activities.

Terrorism WatchDue to the awful events inManchester and Londonin the last few weeks, po-lice officers all across thecountry worked for longerhours, and this was no

different for my team inErdington. You may noticemore uniformed officersaround the High Street. Ifyou see one of my offic-ers, stop and say “Hello!”they genuinely love it!

Although suchatrocities have becomemore common recent-ly, they are still thankfullya rare occurrence andone that you are highlyunlikely to be a victim of.However, it is still impor-tant to know what to do ifyou see a weapons at-tack.

The police advice is toRun, Hide and Tell (thepolice). If you have anyconcerns about the be-haviour of a neighbour,

colleague or evena relative, pleasecall the Anti TerrorHotline on 0800789 321.

The slightest bit ofinformation could

be useful to us, even if youthink it is nothing!

Vehicle crimeWith the summer

months and lighter nights,we often see a rise in cer-tain crimes, in particulartheft from vehicles. Most crimes like this areopportunistic, with thievestargeting cars with itemson display. Please protect yourselfby removing any valua-bles from the car, andkeeping all property outof sight. Also – check your fob hasdone its job, and doublecheck that your car islocked when you leave it.

Finally, can Iplease wish everyone inErdington a happy andsafe summer, and tothank you for such a warmwelcome to the area.
