    STATEMENT OF PROBABLE CAUSE

    On November 15, 2014, at approximately 19:55 hours, Sergeant Puelston received a report of a distraufemale at the residence of 45970 Government Road, Harris, Chisago County, Minnesota. Dispatchadvised that they received a report of an adult female who stated she was inside the residence andneeded help and felt like she could not leave. While in route to the residence Sergeant Puelston wasinformed by dispatch that the adult female informed them that she believed she heard the suspect cockia gun. Dispatch also stated that the caller was whispering and a male could be heard in the background

    times. Dispatch relayed that they were informing the caller to get out of the residence if she was able.

    Upon arriving at the residence, Officer Engebretson observed an adult female, who was later identified X.X.X., run out of the residence towards law enforcement. X.X.X. reported that the suspect was inside thresidence in the living room area. Sergeant Puelston and Deputy Stenson approached the residence frothe west side. They observed an adult male exit the house and stand on the stoop. Sergeant Puelston aDeputy Stenson secured the suspect, who was later identified as JESSE MICHAEL ERICSON, date ofbirth June 1, 1966, hereinafter the Defendant.

    Officer Engebretson spoke to X.X.X., who informed her that the Defendant was in the residence and tha

    she had not seen any weapons, but heard what she believed was the cocking of a gun. X.X.X. appearedbe very upset, was crying, and stated that she was scared. X.X.X. told Officer Engebretson that she hadgotten into a fight with her husband while at the Motel 6 in Roseville. She said that the Defendant offeredher to step into his vehicle to calm down. She said that they went to a store and afterword the Defendanwas supposed to take her back to her husband. Instead the Defendant drove onto Interstate 35. X.X.X. tthe Defendant that she wanted to go back to her husband, but the Defendant told her that this would bereally quick and he needed to check on his dog. The Defendant then brought X.X.X. to the residence inHarris, but X.X.X. did not know where she was. X.X.X. said that she was frightened, but she wasconcerned about upsetting the Defendant and being harmed.

    X.X.X. further stated that at the residence, she continued to tell the Defendant that she wanted to go hom

    but the Defendant kept telling her that she should not worry about it and he would take care of her. TheDefendant also told her to go upstairs and take her clothes off and he would wash them for her. X.X.X.'sstatement to Officer Engebretson was coming out in bits and pieces as X.X.X. was upset and crying.X.X.X. made comments about how stupid it was for her to get into the car, but she didn't know what to dand the Defendant must have done this before because he seemed so comfortable and smooth aseverything was happening.

    Sergeant Puelston spoke with the Defendant, who stated that he had just picked up a female in theRoseville area and brought her back to this residence. The Defendant stated that he was not sure what happening and he did not believe that he had done anything wrong. The Defendant stated that X.X.X. mhave called 911 because she was having a panic attack. Law enforcement performed a sweep of the

    residence and did not locate a firearm.

    Sergeant Puelston went outside of the residence and spoke with X.X.X.. Sergeant Puelston observed thX.X.X. appeared to be hyperventilating, breathing very quickly, was visibly shaking, having tremors, andstating that she did not want to see him again. Sergeant Puelston informed her that she would not have see the Defendant again and asked her to explain what happened. X.X.X. explained that at approximate1830 hours, she was located in the parking lot of the Motel 6 in Roseville, Minnesota with her husband. Sstated that she got into an argument with her husband and that she had observed the Defendant sitting iwhite truck. The Defendant began speaking with her and informed her that she could get into his truck tohave some time to cool down from the argument with her husband. X.X.X. got into his truck and they dro

    to a Holiday gas station. X.X.X. informed Sergeant Puelston that the Defendant immediately began callher "babe" and "honey." X.X.X. stated that after the gas station they got onto Interstate 35E northbound.X.X.X. stated that she became increasingly nervous and asked the Defendant where they were going. TDefendant informed her that he needed to go to his residence to check on his dog. X.X.X. informedSergeant Puelston that she told the Defendant on several occasions that she needed to go back to Motand her husband. The Defendant responded to X.X.X. that he needed to go to his house to check on hisdog. The Defendant told X.X.X. that he lived in the Cambridge area however, his residence is actuallylocated in Harris, which is 15 miles east of Cambridge.

    X.X.X. stated that as they continued northbound on I-35 she became increasingly nervous about what whappening and that she had no idea where she was when they arrived at the residence. She stated that Defendant brought in some groceries when they entered the house and she observed him slide a landlinphone underneath a stack of newspapers on the kitchen table. She later discovered that the phone hadalso been unplugged at some point. She informed Sergeant Puelston that the Defendant then asked hecome upstairs with him but she continued to say no and began crying. She explained that the Defendantgrabbed her arm, and wrist in an attempt to bring her upstairs. She continued to tell the Defendant no. TDefendant would touch her buttocks, including caress it and grab it as well as place his arm around herwaist and rub her back and shoulders. X.X.X. stated that she felt like she was unable to leave theresidence and believed that the Defendant had unplugged the phone to prevent her from calling out.

    The Defendant went upstairs by himself and X.X.X. had plugged the phone in and called her husband. Sinformed her husband that she didn't know where she was and could only see an envelope with an addrfrom Rush City. The Defendant then returned to the room and again asked X.X.X. to come upstairs withhim. X.X.X. reiterated no and stated something about the fact that she was cold or that her clothes wereslightly damp. The Defendant responded that he would wash her clothes for her and that she could wearsome of his clothes. The Defendant also told her that he would bring her back to Roseville in the morningbut X.X.X. told him no and that she wanted to leave now. She stated that the Defendant becameincreasingly agitated and began stomping up and down the stairs. She explained that one of these timeshe believed she heard the Defendant cocking a gun. X.X.X. informed Sergeant Puelston that at this poshe was thinking that she was going to die.

    After returning upstairs, X.X.X. picked up the phone and heard the Defendant speaking on what soundelike a sex line as he was saying sexually explicit things. She stated that she hung up the phone, but thenpicked it up again and continued to hear the Defendant's voice on the phone. She stated that she believthe Defendant then heard her on the phone and she hung up. X.X.X. picked up the phone a third time angot a dial tone at which point she called 911. X.X.X. stated that at this point the Defendant camedownstairs and began turning off the lights and had at some point locked the door to the residence. Durthis time, X.X.X. stated that she was becoming increasingly scared and the Defendant was going insideand outside the residence and pacing around. At some point, X.X.X. stated she felt she had an opportuto flee from the residence and she ran out the front door at which time she made contact with OfficerEngebretson.

    Sgt. Puelston placed the Defendant under arrest and transported him to the Chisago County Jail. At thethe Defendant was read his Miranda rights and he indicated that he understood his rights and was willinto provide a statement. Sgt. Puelston found the Defendant to be evasive and would not fully answer thequestions. The Defendant stated that he saw X.X.X. get into a fight with her husband and he offered to ther to get food and calm her down. He stated that they got food at Hardee's and then went to a gas statiHe said that after the gas station, he started heading to his house. The Defendant stated that he told X.Xthat she could stay at his house and deal with her problems in the morning. He stated that X.X.X. agreedgo to his house. The Defendant stated that once at his residence, he unloaded some groceries and fed cat. The Defendant explained that X.X.X. started making some calls and she then had a panic attack. T

    Defendant said that he was trying to calm her down and then she left the residence in order to get some

    In addition to other prior convictions, the Defendant has been convicted of Felony Kidnapping from anincident in 2012, Gross Misdemeanor Fifth Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct from an incident in 2010, aFelony Third Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct from an incident in 1990.
