Presentation

I am Erik Rigola an engineering industrial design student at ELISAVA Escola Superior de Disseny i Enginyeria de Barcelona.

My first purpose when I became an engineering industrial design student was getting an engineer degree but taking care about the esthetics of objects. While growing up as an industrial designer I realized that a design has to be functional but also with esthetic and emotional value, friendly… and in addition has to be eco-friendly.

Seen what can be achieved with integrating renewable energies in urban elements and doing life-cycle assessment the eco-friendly point will be the one will guide my future.

I am prompt to take new challenges out of college and getting introduced into the workplace.

Redesign of “Lagra Lamp” a desktop lamp by IKEA. The goal was improving it in some way.

In that case is a pretty cheap product (2,99€) son I wanted to maintain that point, but increase the freedom degrees to make it more confortable and adaptable to the user.

The aim of the following project is making an ecodesign from an existing product while doing a life cycle assessment.

Fisrt of all I determined the execution unit, analized all the processes and materials involved with the product. Then changing some features I did the product less damaging for the Earth.

Life Cycle Assessment

The two main impacting points are cleaning and ma-nufacturing. While manufacturing can be changed by me the cleanning process is defined by the final user.

Replacing the 60% of the steel for polypropylene and the wood board for a honeycomb structure, which are the most polluting aims, the reduction of the damage is about the 60%.

Bending machine

Erik Rigola9

You can see the entire project in the blog www.rigolaindesign.wordpress.com.

I started doing a research of diferent types of mechanisms, coil bindings and bending machines in the cu-rrent market. I observed that all those machines were really heavy and big so I decided to design a small portable machine you could take it with you as a folder.

An important change I did in comparison of the usual machines was changing the direction or the rotation axis of the lever, made of aluminium. That part of the machine needs to support a minimum of tension to activate the mechanism (a maximum of 90MPa) so I did an optimitzation research to minimisize the quantity of material.

Changing mesure

To make that analisys I determinated the strength that the user needs to drill a maximum of 20 pages is about 132,33N, the lever reduces the real strenth made by the pins which is about 5557,8N and the length of the lever is 210mm.The results indicates that the mesure it has to be of 122,65mm. With that result we obtain the lightest (173,4g) that support that tension.

After having all the mechanism designed I created the casing.
