ESA NEWS OCTOBER/NOVEMBER

October is one of my favorite months! Autumn, football, bonfires, hayrides, Halloween,

and most importantly ESA RECRUITMENT MONTH! So I ask you, “What did your

chapter plan for October”?

I can’t think of a better way to celebrate friendships and welcome new members into

ESA than by hosting a “Friends Are Life’s Dessert” Party. There are several friendship-

themed parties on the ESA website, or you can create your own. I have also put

together a sheet called “Give Me 5 and I’ll Give You 50”. In other words, take 5 minutes

to fill out and you’ll get 50 prospective members. The idea with 50 in 5 is to try to come up with 5 names in each category

below. Don’t ponder long, just write down names:

• 5 Friends

• 5 people I do business with (hairdresser, nail tech,

dog groomer, jeweler, & etc.)

• 5 relatives

• 5 spouse’s co-workers

• 5 co-workers

• 5 contacts through my children

• 5 neighbors

• 5 previous co-workers or neighbors

• 5 church goers

• 5 social group contacts

So many times we (myself included), talk ourselves out of inviting people by telling ourselves why they wouldn’t join -

without even asking them! Let’s not speak for them anymore. It’s time to share our story with them instead. ESA does

make life sweeter!

If you’ve been around BJ Clark, ESA’s Executive Director, then you’ve heard her say, “It’s time that we get off our apathy

and do something”! I’ve personally have heard this quote numerous times, and I knew what she meant, but I didn’t really

digest it. So let’s think about it. Apathy is defined as lack of interest, enthusiasm, or concern. Today is the day that we get

off our A _ _ and put interest, enthusiasm, and concern into ESA. Today is the day that each one of us takes the future of

ESA to heart and tries to recruit 1 new member this year! Today is the day that we share ESA with others.

With ESA, the Possibilities are Endless!

November is here and besides cooler temps, possible snow, and turkey what happens in November? The St. Jude Give

Thanks Walk of course! The walk will be held in 75 cities across the country on Saturday November 23, 2013. If you haven’t

registered to walk, now is the time to do it. Please go to www.givethankswalk.org and sign up. Registration for the walk is

free. You don’t have to be a member of ESA to join our ESA team. This

is very important that when you sign up, you first pick a national sponsor,

ESA, and then pick a walk in your area. Register as many people as you

can on team ESA... we really want to remain national sponsors of this

event and need to reach our 1000 walker goal... you don't have to donate

to be counted, you just have to register on ESA's national team with your

e-mail address.

Here is an event we thought you might enjoy reading about and possibly

doing! This article is from Susan Meyer from South Carolina,

Murder Mystery Theater for St. Jude My chapter, South Carolina Lambda Mu, has been doing these plays for years. We started out at the home of past SERC President Sondra Kucklick. We invited friends and included dinner. As we gradually got larger, we dropped the dinner idea and served snacks instead. Venues we used were my garage, a church social hall and a school auditorium. Then I moved into a community that was starting a theater group. Some of the people had actual theater experience including small parts on Broadway. Three years ago I approached them and asked if they would do one of these plays with us as a benefit for St. Jude. They embraced the idea and have been enthusiastic about it ever since. The first two years we did the play one night and made $1500 - $1700 for St. Jude. This year the Cane Bay Players suggested two nights and we grossed over $3300 for the two nights! The plays are dinner games distributed by Universal Games. They cost about $20. We purchase them on Amazon.com because SERC has a fundraiser with them. Go to Fundinco.org, type in SERC and there is a place to click for Amazon. SERC will get 3% of the sale. This works for anything you purchase on Amazon. Plays we have done that are good: Eat, Drink and Be Married, Pasta, Passion and Pistols, Stayin Alive, Murder at the Mardi Gras, A Taste for Wine and Murder The plays come with individual scripts for each actor. There is a question and answer section where the characters jump in and accuse each other. This gets very tricky so before we began rehearsal my co-chairman, Nili Young, and I got together with a member of the Cane Bay Players and put the questions and answers in a sequence that makes sense. Then Nili typed the whole thing so all the actors had the same script. They are reading the parts on stage. Nili also wrote 2 endings, 1 for each night. You can find out ‘who done it’ online so we changed it. Next were ticket sales, table reservations and publicity. We got sponsors to cover the costs of the evening and we enlisted an army of women to bake or donate goods. Nili and I spent a lot of hours including going to every rehearsal, organizing volunteers and dealing with every little glitch. Our whole chapter worked as a team to present successful event. People loved the show and are asking about next year’s already. "Showing Not Telling" - I hope you are working on something to be entered in the Association of the Arts at the IC convention in Oregon. This is a porcelain vase that I have been working on. If you like to do hand crafts - try this so much fun! Check out the IC website for the different divisions. If I can be of help, email me at [email protected]. Happy crafting! There are many opportunities to impact and assist our military heroes and their families. I am beginning to hear from some of you and what you are doing in your states for the Hope for Heroes projects. Sue Johnson is the Hope for Heroes Chair in Arizona. Sue and her group of ladies send

cards to service people overseas. In Arizona, starting in September and through

November, they collect gift cards. After November the cards are split three ways and

given to the families of soldiers at three bases. What a great idea and possibly something you could do in your

state. Sue and ladies, thank you for sharing and caring. Sue, please send me pictures of your events and

activities. I would like to hear from the rest of you. Your creativity can spark ideas for others. So, please email

me, [email protected] and let me know about your Hope for Heroes projects and send me pictures.

Remember to check out the IC website for ideas for your Hope for Heroes events; www.epsilonsigmaalpha.org

and under service projects, click on Hope for Heroes. There you will find helpful ideas and instruction on

events like: baseballgloves4troops.com, the U.S. war dog beds project, reading materials to the military,

Warmth for warriors, Care packages, Cell phones for soldiers and many other resources for your project.

So get inspired, start your Hope for Heroes project and let me hear from you. “America’s fighting men and women sacrifice much to ensure that our great nation stays free. We owe a debt of gratitude to the soldiers that have paid the ultimate price for this cause, as well as for those who are blessed

enough to return from the battlefield unscathed.” ~ Allen Boyd As we approach Veteran’s Day and the holidays, the members of the Armed Forces, Veterans and families are in the forefront of our thoughts and prayers. There are many ways to express our gratitude for the sacrifices they make every day to secure our freedom. I know that many of you have Hope for Heroes projects that you are involved in on a yearly basis. Please share your great ideas and photos with me. As well, there have been several of you that have requested ideas for projects and I have listed several of those in this article. Here are some ideas: The Michigan State Council has participated in “Wreaths Across America” for five years. They purchase wreaths and are involved in the ceremonies to lay the wreaths on the Veteran’s gravesites. These events are held at National Cemetery’s across the country, on the same day every year. You can go to the website http://wreathsacrossamerica.org to find out how to get involved and find a National Cemetery near you.

Thanks to LeAnn Wray, MARC President for sharing this information and pictures. IC President Vicky Jones shared a great idea. You can purchase the book “Saluting Grandpa” for your children, grandchildren or a library. 100% of the proceeds go to paying for Honor Flights for WWII Veterans. For more information on this project, go to www.salutinggrandpa.com. You can also contact your local VFW and assist with a breakfast, be a part of the

Veteran’s Day parade in your area or place flags at a local Veteran’s Cemetery. I would like to encourage you to plan a “Hope for Heroes” event in the week prior to Veteran’s Day, November 11th and please email me your stories and pictures to [email protected]. Sherry Suggs

Do you know what Easter Seals does? Are you aware of the services they offer? I have to admit, I was not aware of all the service Easter Seals offers. My home state of North Carolina has let Easter Seals as our philanthropic project slide by the wayside. I’m not sure I really know why, but becoming Easter Seals chair and now a fitness instructor of Special Needs kids has made Easter Seals a priority for me.

I will do my best to educate you on their services each month. Please send me your Easter Seals projects, I want to hear about them! Send to: [email protected]

Easter Seals Mission Easter Seals provides exceptional services, education, outreach, and advocacy so that people living with autism and other disabilities can live, learn, work and play in our communities. Easter Seals has been helping individuals with disabilities and special needs, and their families, live better lives for more than 90 years. From child development centers to physical rehabilitation and job training for people with disabilities, Easter Seals offers a variety of services to help people with disabilities address life's challenges and achieve personal goals.

Services Easter Seals Provides

Autism Services Children’s Services Adult Services Military & Veteran’s Services Employment Training Medical Rehabilitation Camping & Recreation Brain Health Senior Services Highlighting Adult Services Easter Seals programs such as adult day services, in-home support and services, community mobility options, wellness programs and support for family caregivers help people live as independently as possible for as long as possible. The Easter Seals family of services is ever expanding to meet the needs and help promote wellness, independence and connectivity among the growing number of older Americans. One of those services are adult day services…. What are Adult Day Service you ask? • Adult day services offer respite for family members responsible for a relative who is unable to function independently, but does not require 24-hour nursing care. Participants may have: • A physical disability • Memory loss and confusion • A need for assistance with everyday activities of daily living that falls short of 24-hour institutional care • A short-term need for recovery and rehabilitation following a hospital stay Easter Seals provides a safe group environment with coordinated health and social services to promote stabilizing or improving self-care. Qualified, dedicated staff implement best practices in service delivery. The goals of center-based care may prevent, postpone or reduce institutionalization.

Have You Met the Crazy Cat Lady? We’ve all met her at some point: the lonely woman who lives in a filthy house that has been filled to the brim – and – beyond with cats. They are emaciated; their ribs jut out from their bodies. The house smells of ammonia and feces, and the owner of the cats lost count of her pets years ago. It is an actual disease that destroys homes and lives. Although it begins as an act of compassion and love, the Crazy Cat Lady’s desire for companionship quickly escalates into an out-of-control mental illness. Nearly 250,000 animals are victims of animal hoarding each year. This abuse differs from other types of animal cruelty in that the perpetrators don’t always accept or recognize the cruelty they inflict on their animals. Rather, animal hoarders usually ardently believe they are saving or rescuing the animals they imprison. Animal hoarding, sometimes referred to as “collecting”, continues to struggle with public misconceptions. In the majority of hoarding cases, the hoarder firmly believes not only that they have done nothing wrong, but that the animals cannot survive without their “care”. Hoarders may feel that they “love” animals, but they can be blind to the fact that they are not caring for them responsibly even in the face of starvation or death. The most common psychological feature of these individuals is that pets become central to the hoarder’s core identity. The hoarder develops a strong need for control, and just the thought of losing an animal can produce an intense grief-like reaction. Some studies suggest that hoarders grew up in chaotic households, with inconsistent parenting, in which animals may have been the only stable feature. Although the cause of animal hoarding is still poorly understood, there is general consensus that it is a symptom of psychological and neurological malfunctioning, which might involve dementia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. Treatment is difficult and has a low rate of success. Typically, a combination of cognitive-behavior therapy and some type of psychopharmacological intervention is recommended. STATE NEWS

Happy fall from Arizona. We are all enjoying the cool weather here and some are starting to

feel old man winter coming.

We have had been busy since returning from the IC convention in July. We have had a

budget meeting and also our first Council Meeting of the year in September. This is the first

of our four meetings. We are now getting ready for the November Council Meeting. We also have one in

January and April then convention is the end of May first of June.

We had our state leadership the day before the Council Meeting in September and think all learned some new

things and others remembered things forgotten. The turnout for our first meeting was good considering that the

Arizona Cardinals football team was playing their first home game that day and we have some chapters and

members who work the games for their chapters different Philanthropic projects.

We have had one radiothon for St. Jude’s and there will be one in Tucson the first part of November and one in

Phoenix in December and more after the first of the year. We are also preparing for the Walkathon in

November for St Jude’s and many will either be helping in different areas or walking.

For Easter Seal’s in Tucson they will be doing Cooking with the Stars and several other projects ending with a

golf tournament.

From now through the November meeting we will be collecting gift cards for the Military families for three of the

Arizona bases. This is something we have done for several years now. We will also be doing a Christmas

breakfast for children who are sick. They will receive along with their parents a breakfast and a gift or two.

We are also collecting coupons for the military, tabs for the Ronald McDonald Homes, all kinds of cards which

are then remade into new cards an sent to the troops overseas along with many other items, lap robes for

veterans, knitted hats for the homeless, printer cartridges for Easter Seals, the free rice program on computer

and a few other things.

In membership we are having a tea in Tucson for the new pledges and in February we will hold the preferential

luncheon for all new pledges, and re- affiliates. Both these function are hat and gloves affairs. We are hoping

to have a number of pledges presented this year at either/or both affairs. Suzanne Godard, our membership

director and First Vice President/President Elect is working on a couple three new chapters and attending

meetings of some chapters.

Have a happy Thanksgiving and a blessed Christmas and may the New Year bring us all peace and good

health.

A Message from our State President Colleen Proudlock [email protected]

This year we are celebrating the 50th Anniversary of ESA International being introduced into Queensland. I am privileged to represent ESA International as the 2013 – 2014 State President during such an important milestone. I have been a member for over 30 years and followed my mother’s path, in which she joined in 1964, just months after ESA Australia’s inception. ESA was chartered in Childers, Queensland on the 10th December 1963 at Paul Comino’s Café and from this meeting ESA has spread throughout the state. Various activities are being planned. There will be a significant celebration held over the entire weekend of the 14th and 15th December in Childers. The weekend will incorporate our usual half-yearly business meeting, along with a special lunch where we hope to reunite with many members of the past, as well as welcome prospective new members. We also look forward to seeing the many supporters and friends we have had the pleasure of knowing over the years.

“The Joy of Gardening”. Beta Zeta from Fortuna, California recently had their first educational of the year hosted by Marcella Gauna at the Miranda Gardens Resort, with lunch first, a tour of the Miranda Gardens Resort in Miranda, CA and then a tour of a flower garden in Weott, CA, with

dessert served at Marcella' home. Those who enjoyed the tours are pictured from left to right, at one of the cabins we toured at the Miranda Gardens, Imogene DeWarns, Bonnie Reback, Joyce Erickson, Jackie Still, Gayle Godoy, Karen Hall, and Marcella Gauna. Marcella Gauna, Beta Zeta PR Chairman.
