    Location

Frasers Hill is located on the hills of Pahang and Se-langor, one of those places that allows you to boastthat youve walked from one state to another. Fra-sers Hills has seven peaks with an altitude between1,220 and 1,524 meters above sea level. Tempera-

ture ranges between 17C-25C (63F-77F) makingit a nice respite from the heat of the city.

    A Wee Bit Of history

Frasers Hill got its name from a Scottish fellowcalled Louis James Fraser who setup a tin-oretrading post back in the 1890s. He explored thehills and found rich tin deposits and he recruited

Chinese workers to mine the tin. Unfortunately,he went missing without a trace.

    10/192

In 1917, C. J. Ferguson-Davie, Bishop of Singaporewent looking for him without success but reportedthat the place was perfect as a hill retreat from theheat. Two years later work started and an accessroad to the hill station was completed in 1922. That

hill station was then given the name Frasers Hill.

    >The Puncak Inn has seen lots of changes from shops

    to now, a hotel.

My favourite activity here is to sit back and re-lax but that would murder this article, wouldnt

it? There are quite a few things that one can dolike jungle trekking, golfing, bird watching, or justhanging out with nature.

    Whats There To Do?

There are 8 trails in Frasers Hill with the high-est and most challenging one being the Pine Treetrail (1505m), of which is recommended to experi-ence trekkers and those who are fit. Other trails areBishop trail, Rompin trail, and Mager trail ; three ofwhich are 1500 metres.

    >Entrance to Maxwell Trail.

  • 7/26/2019 Escapy - June 2016 - Digital Issue

    13/192

The rest are Kinderley trail and Maxwell trail ofwhich are 750m. The rest are Abu Suraidi trail(500m) and Hemmant trail (1000m). Hemmanttrail is the easiest to do and is recommended forbeginners while Bishops trail and Pine Tree trailsare for the more experienced.

Frasers Hill is a haven for bird watchers. It is cooland has approximately 260 species of birds includ-ing the 2 endemic species that are globally threat-ened; the Malaysian Whistling Thrush and theMountain Peacock Pheasant.

    >A sign that tells one that the area is an important bird

area... also means, a place for bird watchers.

  • 7/26/2019 Escapy - June 2016 - Digital Issue

    15/192

A good place for bird watching along Girdle Road,Mager Road, and Jaldy Maxwell road. Birds canalso be seen on trails and about the Jeriau wa-terfall area of which is about 4km from the maintown centre. But if one is really up to it, one canbegin at the Gap and make his or her way up tothe top, looking for birds along the way. It will bean 8km walk.

    Relaxing At The Falls

The Jeriau Waterfalls is a natural waterfall thatmany who visit Fraser s Hill flock to. The trail fromthe entrance to the falls is paved and is quite aneasy walk for the reasonably fit. The reason why Iwrote for the reasonably fit is because the falls

maybe easy to get to but there is a lot of climbing(steps) to do on the way back.

  • 7/26/2019 Escapy - June 2016 - Digital Issue

    17/192

Following the trail all the way to the bottom, one willarrive at a manmade pool and a waterfall (JeriauFalls) that falls into a shallow pool that is dammedby a concrete wall. There are gazebos and benchesaround the pool where one can sit under and havea picnic.

The Jeriau Waterfalls area also has campsiteswhere one can do some camping. The place comesequipped with barbeque pits and toilets. All in all,the place is a lovely place to spend a few hours re-

    laxing and / or picnicking.

    Golf In The HIlls

Golfers will be happy to know that there is a place totee off in Fraser s Hill. The Royal Frasers Hill GolfClub is one of the oldest golf courses in Malaysia. It is a 9 hole course with some rather unique sort ofchallenges that you would normally not experienceat normal courses. Hint, bring along a note pad, pen, and something to cleanup.

the paddock where one can do some horse ridingand should one fancy; shoot some arrows. One canalso o some shopping at the town centre.

Frasers Hill is a photographers haven. With lotsof things to shoot from flowers, to insects, to birds,to ruins, to architectures, and loads more. I washaving a blast going macro, shooting flowers, in-sects, and many other subjects. My recommen-

dation is to pack your gears according to yourpreferred style, and do bring a tripod.

The sleepy town of Kuala Kubu Bharu in Hulu Se-langor is a town many locals drive by on their way toFrasers Hill. Not many stop as it is not known to be an

attraction. What many do not know is that Kuala KubuBharu is rich in history.

    29

  • 7/26/2019 Escapy - June 2016 - Digital Issue

    30/192

Before Kuala Kubu Bharu there was Kuala Kubu.

Kuala Kubu, back in the day was a mining town afort for Raja Mahadi and Syed Mashor as they bat-tled Tengku Kudins army during the Selangor civilwar from 1867 to 1874. It was then the second larg-est town in Selangor.

  • 7/26/2019 Escapy - June 2016 - Digital Issue

    31/192

Shortly later Kuala Kubu was placed under the ad-ministration of Sir Frank Athelstane Swettenham, followed by JP Rodger, and Edward Maxwell. In1883, heavy rains caused the Kuala Kubu Dam toburst, a tragedy that destroyed 38 homes, killing 33of the towns folks including District Ofcer, Sir Cecil

    Ranking.

Sir Cecil Ranking was blamed for the tragedy as hehad supposedly shot a white crocodile (regardedas the guardian of the river) despite being told notto do so. All that was left of Ranking was his hand of

which rests in a grave till this day in a grave at theold Kuala Kubu Rest House.

It was after this tragedy that a new town was builtand that town is Kuala Kubu Bharu of which meansNew Kuala Kubu. Kuala Kubu Bharu is near theold Kuala Kubu and is not a rebuild of the old town.

Kuala Kubu Bharu has been the administrative cen-tre of Hulu Selangor since 1931.

If youre thinking of spending time outdoors but donot want to go through the hardships and discom-

forts associated with camping, why not try glamp-ing? Yes, it is quite a new word to me too. Glamp-ing is simply a more glamorous form of camping.

hotel room. The Sticks is camping with some crea-ture comforts found in hotel rooms. Ive gone glam-ping.

The best way to get to The Sticks is by car. I recom-mend using the North-South Espress Way from KualaLumpur, exiting at the Kuala Kubu Bharu exit. Follow

the signboards to Bukit Fraser (Frasers Hill) from theKuala Kubu Bharu Town. Once youve passed the town, lookout for Chiling River (Sungai Chiling) signboard.Right after the Chiling River parking area lookout for aparking area with a hut on the left. That is the parkingarea of The Sticks.

    For Foodies Philemon Foo

Good food, good view, and good ambience; thatis what Byblos Cafe and Lounge is about. Byblosis the oldest most ancient city in Lebanon (7000 to8000BC) and is steeped in history. It is from history

and culture that the food in Byblos is based on. By-blos serves up authentic Mediterranean and Leba-nese cuisine but with a new spin.

Wrapping the minced lamb in pita bread togetherwith the hummus dip and tabbouleh creates an ex-plosion of avours in the mouth. It is simply deli-

cious. Writing about it now makes my mouth water.

Nasi lemak is a dish where the rice is cooked withcoconut milk and pandan leaves, served with sam-bal (chilli paste), anchovies, eggs, and cucumberslices. Thats the basic serving, the kind I used toeat in school. The nasi lemak here reminds me of

the ones I used to eat at school. I love it.

This dish is simply minced chicken meat cooked withsweet sambal (sweet chilli paste), served with whiterice, and egg. The chicken together with the sweetchilli paste is really tasty. The eggs sort of neutral-izes the saltiness of the dish.
