READING: The Punk Subculture.• The punk subculture includes a diverse array of ideologies, and forms of expression, including

fashion, visual art, dance, literature, and film, which grew out of punk rock in the mid-1970s.• Punks seek to outrage others with the highly theatrical use of clothing, hairstyles, cosmetics,

tattoos, jewelry and body modification. Early punk fashion adapted everyday objects for aesthetic effect: ripped clothes was held together by safety pins or wrapped with tape; ordinary clothing was customized by embellishing it or adorning it with paint; a black bin liner* became a dress, shirt or skirt; safety pins and razor blades were used as jewelry. Also popular have been leather, rubber, and vinyl clothing.

• Some punks wear tight jeans, plaid/tartan trousers, kilts or skirts, T-shirts, leather jackets (which are often decorated with painted band logos, pins and buttons, and spikes), and shoes such as Converse. They usually wear spiked bracelets around their wrists and leather necklaces around their necks too. They do not usually wear sunglasses. They can also have some piercings. Both boys and girls wear earrings and rings (in figers and thumbs!).

• Some punks cut their hair into Mohawks or other dramatic shapes, style it to stand in spikes, and have dyed hair with vibrant, unnatural colours. They often have got their body tattooed as well.

• Some punks are anti-fashion, arguing that punk should be defined by music or ideology. This is most common in the post-1980s US hardcore punk scene, where members of the subculture often dressed in plain T-shirts and jeans, rather than the more elaborate outfits and spiked, dyed hair of their British counterparts.

WRITING: Describing a celebrity• My favourite singer is Andrea Corr. She is 30 years old

and she is from Ireland. She sings in a group called The Corrs.

• She has got dark hair and brown eyes and a beautiful smile. She usually dresses very casual, but in concerts she normally wears trendy clothes. She does not have any piercings or tattoos. However she wears a ring and a bracelet in the picture.

• She is extrovert and friendly. In addition, she has got a good sense of humour. On the other hand, she has a wonderful voice. However, she is very bossy sometimes.

• One thing she loves is singing in concerts. On the other hand, she enjoys playing the tin whistle, a traditional Irish instrument. One thing she hates is long journeys. She is afraid of planes so she normally travels by car.
