Welcome to Maastricht!
Dear Colleagues,
On behalf of the board of directors of ESRA andmembers of the Organising Committee we invite youto join us in Maastricht for the 35th Annual ESRACongress State of the Art Safety Standards inRegional Anaesthesia.
Since its foundation in 1980, ESRA has sought toassociate and affiliate into one organization allanaesthesiologists, physicians and scientists who areengaged in, or interested in, the techniques ofregional anaesthesia for surgery, obstetrics, paediatrics and pain control.
As in previous years, the focus of the scientificprogramme will be on state of the art presentations inour field as well as new insights into basic science, clinical research and therapeutic interventions. Weare creating a scientific programme in which theinteraction between speakers and audience is to becontinuous and the basic aim for the scientificprogramme. The scientific standard at the annualESRA congress is now recognised as one of the bestin Europe and as a result carries a high rating withthe Accreditation Council for Continuing MedicalEducation, who assign credit hours to all ESRAcongresses.
The Scientific Committee is developing a programmewith topics covering all the fields of interest in theapplication of regional anaesthesia/analgesia alone orin multimodal approach. Acute and chronic painmanagement topics of special interest foranaesthesiologists will also be included as animportant part of the programme.
The type of sessions will be refresher course lectures, symposia, pro/con debates, panel discussions, luncheon sessions, special workshops includingcadaver workshops, and of course free paper and

ESRA Position Statement : Non medicallyqualified staff performing anaesthesia To combat the rising cost of healthcare acrossEurope, many countries have started using nonmedical personnel to perform techniques that wouldhave traditionally been the domain of trainedanaesthesiologists.
National regional anaesthetic societies have solicitedESRA to outline our position. So in May 2016, wepublished our position statement, summarised here.
In some countries, ESRA says, properly trained andsupported nonmedically qualified healthcareprofessionals can perform some types of localanaesthetic but this should be agreed first withanaesthesia bodies, other regulators and thehospital’s own department of anaesthesia. And theseprocedures should be limited to:
Local infiltration for procedures such as woundtoilet and suturingFascia iliaca blocks for fractured neck or shaftof feumurSubTenon’s block for cataract and retinalsurgery
We have warned against the use of nonmedicallyqualified personnel to perform any of these regionalanaesthetic techniques:
Spinal epidural and other neuroaxial blocksPlexus and other trunk blocksPeripheral nerve blocksPeribulbar or retrobulbar eye blocksBlocks for chronic pain therapy
We hope this this will aid national societies andgoverning bodies in the performance of safe regionalanaesthesia throughout Europe. Barry Nicholls ESRA Secretary General José De Andrés ESRA President

Congrats to the new ESRA Residents &Trainees Representative
ESRA Residents and Trainees members electedKarin as their first representative in the Society’shistory. Karin Schoenmakers
Resident at: Radboudumc, Nijmegen, TheNetherlands Special interests: perioperative pain management.PhD thesis on duration of peripheral nerve blockades. Personal strengths: enthusiasm, communicationskills, research experience and punctuality.
“Why I decided to stand for election” “My vision is to educate all the residents in Europe inultrasound guided regional anaesthetic techniques. This way all anaesthesiologists of the future will havethe competence to perform these techniques andmore patients will be able to choose such a techniquefor perioperative pain management. My goal is to set up a learning program about thebasics of ultrasound and a basic set of blocks withinthe residency. Containing an anatomical part (theoryand cadaver workshops) and a practical part withsufficient handson training in scanning and needlehandling. And of course the social events areimportant too! I’m ready to achieve this within ESRA. Progress so far We have recently surveyed residents nationally in theNetherlands (for DARAESRA) to find out what theythink about education and the future of regionalanaesthesia. I would like to extend this survey acrossEurope so that we can provide a programme to suitall our residents. Next steps: Meet me in Maastricht The first Residents & Trainees meeting will take placeat the ESRA congress in Maastricht next week, whereall ESRA national representatives will gather todiscuss which new initiatives to put in place.” Good luck Karin!

Testimonial – How getting an ESRAFellowship has helped my career
Ivan Kostadinov Resident anaesthesiologist: Clinical Hospital,Ljubljana, Slovenia Special interest: Regional Anaesthesia Fellow at: Sint Maartenskliniek in NijmegenTheNetherlands Supervisor: Dr Rudolf Stienstra Skills gained: Level 5 in ultrasound andneurostimulator guided peripheral nerve blocks.Passed the EDRA examination.
“I was at one of the ESRA Cadaver Workshops whenDr Van Geffen, from the Netherlands, told me aboutthe ESRA Fellowship program. I knew right away itwas a perfect opportunity for me, and so I applied andwas delighted to be accepted.
From the very beginning of my fellowship, I felt like apart of the team at Sint Maartenskliniek. Theanaesthesiologists trained me intensively 1:1. Undertheir direct supervision, I gained enormousexperience in peripheral nerve blocks (I performed568 blocks in total). So I was soon able to run myown list under indirect supervision. At the end of thefellowship I was able to show proficiency inultrasound and neurostimulator guided peripheralnerve blocks with skill level 5 (skill level 5=able toperform a procedure independently and able to teachand supervise others). The knowledge and experience I gained on thefellowship helped me to go on to pass the EDRAexamination.
Nowadays I am transferring that experience andknowledge to the colleagues in my country. At the end I would like again to thank ESRA for thegiven opportunity to improve myself in the field ofRegional Anaesthesia.
Also I strongly recommend this fellowship program toall young anaesthesiologists interested in RegionalAnaesthesia and encourage them to apply.”
