    Scrap Metal Barge a Success!

    Page 2

    City of Sand Point

After years of planning and working on ideas to rid

our community of the massive amounts of metalthat is originally shipped to Sand Point in the formof a useful commodity and ultimately ends up asscrap metal - scrap metal that has clogged our land-fill and been an eyesore in our community - theCity, with assistance from the tribes-has success-fully hauled, stockpiled and loaded a barge that hastaken approximately 100 tons of scrap metal out ofSand Point!

The barge arrived late Wednesday afternoon

    (August 17

    th

) and left port, headed for King Coveon Saturday morning.

Howard Smith and the entire Public Works crew

    PLEASE SEPARATE METAL FROM GARBAGE.

DO NOT DISPOSE OF WASTE OIL OR ANTI-FREEZE AT LANDFILL.

Scrap Metal staged at the landfill.

deserve a huge pat-on-the-back for the profession-al way they handled the entire operation frompreparation of the scrap metal materials (drainingoils, removing refrigerants and crushing), to thehauling, staging and final loading of the barge -this difficult and potentially dangerous event cameoff with few problems and our community ismuch cleaner because of their efforts.

Although we were not able to haul all the scrapmetal that has accumulated over these many years, the City continues working on bringing a secondbarge to our community to finish the job. Fornow, however, the City of Sand Point continues toset the example of how to properly and effectivelydeal with solid waste issues in rural Alaska.

News from the Police DepartmentDuring the August 9, 2011 City Council meeting, Sand Point Police Officer Nate Taylor received hisBasic Police Certification Certificate. This is one of the three levels of certifications an Alaskan PeaceOfficer can earn during their Law Enforcement career. Even though it may be the first level of certifi-cation, the basic certification is perhaps the hardest to acquire. Within the first 12-14 months of em-ployment, a newly appointed police officer must show their worth in many ways and meet stiff qualifi-cations in order to step among the ranks of other proven officers throughout the State of Alaska. Thisis certainly a well-earned award for such a fine officer.

Congratulations to Officer Taylor for his accomplishment!

Greetings from the Rob-ert E. Galovin Small

    Boat Harbor!

A lot has happened sincethe last newsletter, asidefrom just the generalmaintenance and upkeepof the harbor.

    Floats

    The crew has beenbusybuilding new

    floatsfor the B and C

floats. They have fourmore to constructandchange. This has beenan on-going process andhas taken ten years ormore, but the forty footfloats will all have beenchanged.

The City is in the pro-

cess of having the wholeinfrastructureof thesmall boat harbor re-

done. Inspectors cameand evaluated the small

boat harbor. After 30years of service, the har-bor has seen alot ofwear and tear and theinspectors did not givethe harbor very highmarks. Themonies arebeing gathered for Phase1of the re-build. Thedate is yet to be deter-mined but we are hoping

that this will begin with-in the next year.

    Increased Rates

    and Improvements

    For the first time in overtwenty years, the ratesfor moorage, haul out,storage, ect., have allbeen re-adjusted. Theymay seem extravagant;

however, the rates at theSand Point Boat Harborare still among the low-

est in the State of Alas-ka. The new rates will

    also help with the re-

    building of the old infra-structure.

    Ferry Schedule

The season is windingdown for the ferry runs. There will be three tie-ups heading West onSeptember 1st, 15th, and29th, with the last run

heading East on Oct.2nd.The freight boats willstill keep a steady sched-ule, arriving everyThursday or Friday withvery little variance. Theboats seldom stop at theCity dock on the South-bound leg so if youbring freight to go South

we will put it on the boatgoing North. It willeventually arrive in Se-attle or at points South

Thank you to the PauloffHarbor Tribe and City forordering more life vests andmaking sure there areenough vests for all the us-ers. Over the years, KidsDont Float life jackets havebeen picked up on thebeaches, which is okay be-cause it shows that theyounger people are using
