Database Defined Flat File
Information stored in columns and rows in a single table. Multidimensional
Information stored in a virtual 3D (or higher) format. Data in a
multidimensional database has multiple categories, not just columns and
rows as presented in flat file or relational databases. A multidimensional
database supports simultaneous views of data sets for analysis of the
relationships between the many categories stored. Because of its 3D
nature, a multidimensional database is often referred to as a cube, but it
can be thought of in terms of a cylinder, pyramid, soccer ball, or any
object with many sides.
Example: Hyperion Essbase

Dimensions
A dimension is a main category and the highest level of a multidimensional database. Hyperion Essbase databases have a minimum of three dimensions. The maximum is unlimited

Members
A member is any item within a dimension. Qtr1, Qtr2, Qtr3, and
Qtr4 are members of the Year dimension.

Parent, Child, and Sibling Members
Parent and Child
A child is a member with a parent member above it. Jan, Feb, and Mar are child members of the parent member Qtr1. Qtr1 and Qtr2 are child
members of the parent member Year Sibling
A sibling is a child member with the same parent as another child member.
Jan, Feb, and Mar are sibling members of each other. Apr, May, and June are
sibling members of each other but are not siblings of Jan, Feb, or Mar because
they have different parent members

Generations and Levels
GenerationA generation is the rank of the members starting from the
dimension name going down through the database hierarchy. Market, the dimension name, is Generation 1. US and Canada are both Generation 2. East, West, South, Central, and Toronto are Generation 3. Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and New Mexico are Generation 4. Canada does not have any Generation 4 members.
LevelA level is like a generation but from a different direction.
Levels start at the lowest rank and count up the database hierarchy toward the dimension name. Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, New Mexico, and Toronto are Level 0. (Level 0 members never have child members.) Level 1 is East, West, South, Central, and Canada. Level 2 is US. Level 3 is Market.

Aliases
An alias is a second, alternative name for a member. Aliases are labels that display the member names in a more descriptive, often clearer manner. For example, the actual member names for the Product dimension are numbers (100, 200, 300, etc.). When the alias names are displayed instead, the product names are shown

Building Reports with Member Selection
A Hyperion Essbase database may contain hundreds or even thousands of members, making it difficult to remember each member name.
You can use the Essbase Member Selection dialog box to find and select members and to define the layout of members in the worksheet.
In addition, you can use Boolean operators, such as AND, OR, and NOT, or other search parameters to specify criteria and conditions that members must meet for the member selection.
Member selection is an important method of creating a spreadsheet
report for the data you want to retrieve
