Who am I?
• Senior Consultant with US-Analytics for over 9 years.• Specialize in Essbase, Planning, and providing both with data from HFM.• Multiple Extended Analytics Implementations.• Multiple Essbase Analytics Link Implementations (11.1.1.3 and 11.1.1.4).• Shameless plug…
• Presenting at K-Scope 2012 in San Antonio.• Presented at K-Scope 2010 in Washington DC and 2011 in Longbeach.
Introduction to EAL – What is it?
• Creates and maintains Essbase applications based on data and meta-data from HFM.
• Provides reporting scalability without compromising performance on HFM.
• Delivers near real-time and on-demand data synchronization.• Allows for data and meta-data extraction to relational sources.
What’s new in 11.1.1.4?
• Overall interface has been revamped.• Support for replicated partitions.
• Data is actually stored in Essbase.• Allows the use of export functionality and report scripts.• Data regions added to support extracts to replicated partitions.
• Support for EPM 11.1.2.1.• User and Data security migration.
Essbase Analytics Link vs. Extended Analytics
Pros•Fastest way to get data into Essbase
•Manageable by users•Great meta-‐data•Will extract to relational
Cons•Requires EAS to administer
•Still not widely adopted, so no large user community…yet
EAL Pros•Does not require Essbase•Less moving parts…less to break
Cons•Bring your DBA, because you will need one
•Meta-‐data extracts are not easily usable
EA
Tips and Tricks – Replicated Partitions
• Pros• Data actually lives in Essbase.• Data extraction for other purposes can be accomplished quickly and easily.
• Cons• Extracting data is more complex and requires the use of data regions.
• Data extraction takes longer than the transparent partition mechanism (no black magic to make it faster).
• Best Practices• So why would you use this? When you need data physically in Essbase.
• Don’t run any calculations that could potentially change upper level data! HFM data has a habit of being upper level…
Tips and Tricks – What about ASO?
• EAL only supports BSO, but often we will want to use that data in an ASO model…how?• Option one…a simple partition from the BSO application created by EAL.
• Option two…use the replicated partition functionality of EAL.• Meta-Data
• Use the meta-data extracted
