FROM OUR PASTOR

An oft heard phrase, more so just at mealtime, is “Who would give thanks?” For some there is an uneasy shifting while others silently offer, ‘oh no, not me.’ Then one summons her or his voice; accepts the invitation and a witness in gratitude is made. I wonder why it seems more difficult at times than others. There can be so many distractions to our attitude and action when our focus is other than Jesus Christ. Should the quantity or the quality of the meal just before us be the most important matter? Or is something more at work in the heart of a believer? Those of us who have experienced a short term fast know how amazing the first bites of solid food taste. How just a morsel or the first spoonful may have caused us to exclaim, “oh my, that is so-o good” or “mm-mm-mm.” From the wisdom of Scripture we remember: Better a dry crust eaten in peace than a house filled with feasting--and conflict. ~Proverbs 17:1 NLT Perhaps it is not the food at all; merely another opportunity to focus our minds and hearts back to our source of life, lest we listen too much to the surrounding conflicts that can attend our path. Our present and future hope, our center, our joy is in the love of the Lord God, who has seen fit to extend grace upon grace daily toward each of us. Unmerited favor from the Most High God. While some current teenagers cannot imagine even a few mo-ments without texting between friends, how much time do we allow between our conver-sations with the Lord? The current year with all its concerns and potential for our future tries to re-multiply its impact upon us. Let us not submit to a spirit of fear; but stay strong in the Lord and trust in His provision. I suggest that with a sincere prayer of gratitude; -for the meal before you, -for what lies ahead, -for whatever; that we then model the great prayers of Jesus...who was renewed moment by moment to endure, achieve, and succeed all for the glory of the Fa-ther. And the food will taste different because you have given thanks. It is not a task to be done or achieved. It is an invitation to stop the ‘busy’, to cease the ‘gotta do’ and to come into that blessed and peaceful place that is ‘in Christ.” A prayer of gratitude should flow just as easily as a baby’s gentle breathing. He is our hope, our refuge, our present help in times of trouble; He is our rock, our fortress, our great Shepherd, whose love is unending and whose mercies are new each day….. “Who would give thanks?” “Oh, pick me...I would, I really would.” How about you? OUTREACH/MISSION NEWS

This month we draw your attention to three opportunities to practice extravagant gen-erosity as you give of your time, talents, resources and prayers to enrich the life of the church.

First, please be aware that the Outreach quilting project is ongoing each Tuesday at 10:30 in the Fellowship Room in the church. Our busy quilters have reached the assem-bly stage where their colorful and creative quilt fronts will be joined with batting and back pieces to make the finished lap quilts. If you are able, please join in this sharing of time and talents to enrich the Christmas season for our homebound members.

November is here and our semi-annual gift drive for the residents of Bath VA Center is in full swing. As in years past, we are requesting donations of clothing, personal hygiene and health care items, books, sundries, stationery, gift cards, phone cards and the like. Again this year there is a special need for denim jeans and sweat pants in larger sizes. There will be a more complete list of needed items on an in-sert in the bulletins in November. Please watch for that information and use it to guide your donation efforts for this extremely worthwhile ministry. All of your donations will be taken to Bath VA during the first week of December.

On Saturday, November 19th, our church will be enjoying our annual Harvest/Thanksgiving dinner. The dinner is scheduled for 6:00 pm in the fellowship room. There are sign-up sheets located in the foyer of the church. Please use these sheets to indicate if you will be attending and the number who will be accompanying you. We urge you to invite family members and friends. The food and fellowship is always an uplifting way to start the holiday season. One of the sheets can be used to let us know what type of dish to share you can bring to the celebration and another can be used to tell us if you can help with set-up, clean-up and decorations/entertainment. Please give ex-travagantly of your time and talents to make this a successful event. As part of the eve-ning's festivities, Naomi Circle will again be sponsoring a silent auction of assorted gift baskets. Watch for further details about the auction.

UNITED METHODIST MEN Greetings from UMM !

It is always a joy to sit around the tables and enjoy good food, good fellowship, and good times. Thanks Jerry, Truett, and John for cooking. The devotion of the day consisted of a reading from the stewardship devotional "Extravagant Generosity" This little booklet is filled with ideas and lots of stewardship opportunities. We hope you are reading it.

The men discussed changing the format of our Sweetheart Banquet. We hope to have some definitive ideas for discussion at our December breakfast.

For the final breakfast of 2016, our December 18th cooks will be Jim, Darrin and Tom. UMM, where all men and boys are welcome. Blessings to you all! Alan and Bryan

TRIPLE L (Living Longer & Liking It!)

Living Longer and Liking It (Triple L) met on October 20th at noon for a delicious meal. There were twenty-three Sr. adults in attendance. Boy! was it a delicious meal and time of fellowship. Following the meal, our missionary guests, Sandy and Paul Rog, shared a brief video of their work in the Southern Caribbean islands. They followed this with a little about each island and shared how God is moving in the lives of people there. They receive quarterly gifts from our church but can always use more monies for the minis-try. They especially request our prayers as they serve our God. Look for and pick up prayer cards they left on the foyer table to help us remember to keep them in prayer.

Triple L will not be meeting in November but will next meet on December 15th for our special Christmas celebration. Our hosts will be Gloria and Bill Hamlin and more details will be forthcoming. I can assure you it will be a fun time. Research tells us that sociali-zation in the golden years is so important. Please mark your calendar and plan to join us. This is a fun group with no officers, minutes or committees. Just plain FUN and Fellow-ship. Diane and Alan Forsberg

LIBRARY NEWS Burrrr, what happened to the temperature? The summer was just beautiful and warm but winter always follows and so here is fall. There were no “In memory or In honor of” books donated this month. There were 29 books donated this month. Some of the books contained more than one story in them. 24 books were fiction 4 books were non-fiction 1 book was a children’s book Books were given by the following:

3 books by Linda Austin 12 books by Nancy Blackman and Betty Stoll 14 books by Joan Smith and Sue Browning I would like to thank Betty Stoll for helping me pull books for the rummage sale and clean shelves as well as reorganize the books by authors. If anyone would like a Prayer Bear for a friend, a family member or anyone going through a difficult time, please feel free to contact myself, Kim in the church office or any member of the Tuesday Bible Study Group. Remember: The Welcome Room is a great place to meet for a cup of coffee, tea or juice and maybe a sweet or two. Get to converse with other members, new people and chil-dren.
