Sometime during the month of May, the D.S. called to ask, if I would fill in on Sundays at Clearfield and Wellsville for a period of six weeks beginning in June. Once again, I encountered what seems like being assigned to a new charge, which I had experienced six times.

Linda and I had been to Clearfield some years ago for their Christmas dinner and Tree Lighting ser-vice. While serving in Osawatomie, I had been to Wellsville once for a PPR committee training meeting. But, we had to take a test drive to locate the churches.

Unfortunately, Rev. Symes' injury was more serious than first thought. So, through these months we have become acquainted with most of you. We have found you to be most wholesome and welcoming. Friendships have been developed, and we have found the Christian spirit alive and well.

Now that Rev. Kathy is feeling well enough to continue her ministry, it is time to say farewell, until we meet again. We know you will be patient with her and faithful to the task of Christian discipleship. May God bless you and lead you on in this earthly journey. Thank you for your loyalty and support.

Lee and Linda Wiersma

A couple of notes about church members that I wanted to catch you up on:

Marlene Wagner has been battling some serious health issues since last Christmas Eve. She has finally been well enough to have surgery. Surgery went well and she is home and is currently recovering and gaining strength.

Lenore Mauslein recently went through heart valve replacement. She too is home and regaining strength.

We need to be in prayer for both Marlene and Lenore as they go thru the healing process.

As some of you may have heard my Aunt Peggy passed away unexpectedly a couple of weeks ago. When I was a child she was my primary caregiver. We reconnected over our common love of genealogy. As a matter of fact, today is the 265th anniversary of the date that my great, great, great (not sure how many greats) grandfather Peter Steffe came to America. I was honored when they asked me to officiate at her memorial service. Due to traveling and work issues with other family members her service will be on Friday, October 5th in St. Louis at 1 p.m.

Because I am unable to drive and because I am mentally drained after I have to concentrate for even a short period of time, I have made the decision to postpone my first Sunday back until Sunday, October 14th. I feel terrible about this because I am so excited (and I must be honest, more than a little nervous) about being back in the pulpit. We will wait to celebrate communion until that Sunday. Carolyn Elder will be filling the pulpit on the 7th. Carolyn is a certified lay speaker from Ottawa. You may have seen Car-olyn perform with her group, Hands of Glory. Hands of Glory uses sign language with Christian music.

I am continuing with neck physical therapy and vision therapy. The vision therapy will continue through the first of the year as those issues seem to be quite severe. I ask for your continued love and grace as we move into this new part of our journey.

Grace and Peace,

Pastor Kathy

We had another wonderful day at Wellsville Days! We won second with the judges, the retirement home float won first place. Congratulations! We were able to win the crowd over for crowd favorite! Altogether our float raised $575. Our bake sale also had a successful day, raising $402. We raised a total of $977! Some of that will be used to pay for the materials of the float and the remaining will go into our Student Aid fund.

Our float represented a time when Carrie Nation came to Wellsville. Carrie had organized a branch of the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) and campaigned for enforcement of the state’s liquor laws. She described herself as "a bulldog running along at the feet of Jesus, barking at what He doesn't like." She, along with her followers, would go to different towns to shut down the saloons and preach. She would often carry a hatchet to destroy the bars with, claiming she was saving the men from a drunkards fate. During her two days in Wellsville, Carrie preached at the Methodist Church and the Congressional Church. It is said that she had prayed for rain for the people here, and a few days later it rained!

A HUGE thank you to our float committee for all their hard work and to everyone that baked and donated goods to the bake sale. But mostly, thank you to everyone that came out to show your support for our little town. God has blessed us with a wonderful team and an amazing community.
