The swish of the curtain, the excited pre-
show murmur of the audience as the house
lights dim – yes, it’s panto season again.
And what fun it all is, unless you’re an actor.
Two Christmases ago I appeared as the
Wicked Queen in a production of Snow
White in Southwick, and all had been going
swimmingly in rehearsal – until we got to
the first try-out on stage.
“Now, darling, for your first entrance,
I want you to appear through a trap door
and brandish the magic potion,” declares the director. “All you
have to do is crawl down this tunnel, heave open the door above
you with one shoulder, get your foot on the first rung of the
ladder, press the button for the smoke machine – on cue, of course
– and away you go!”
A piece of cake, you may be thinking – but I have to confess to
a few misgivings. For a start, the tunnel is very low, very narrow
and pitch black. I’m wearing a long velvet gown, a vast cloak, a
tall headdress and high-heeled boots. And there I am, crouched
in the dark, in a space roughly the size of a large egg box filled
with smoke because – yes, I have managed to grope for the smoke
machine button and press it on cue.

Somehow I manage to heave open the trapdoor, extricating my
boot heel from the hem of my gown as I climb the ladder. I stagger
on to the stage, seize the prop goblet placed nicely to hand by the
stage crew and deliver my first immortal line:
“Aha! With the aid of this potion I shall
be the fairest in the land!”
And after this heroic effort, how does
the audience greet me, night after night?
They boo.
Life’s so unfair for pantomime villains.

In her black sparkly frock
and high spiked collar, Linda
Nolan is just as you’d imagine
a Wicked Queen. You may
remember her in more
humble garb, however, as Mrs
Johnstone, the mother facing
a terrible dilemma in Willy
Russell’s smash hit musical,
Blood Brothers.
“I was on tour with the show
and in the West End for a total
of eight years,” says Linda. “It’s
a role full of laughter and tears,
and it’s my absolute favourite in
musical theatre.”
Having played a series of
panto goodies – Cinderella, Alice
Fitzwarren and Jill in Jack and
the Beanstalk – Linda is looking
forward to being thoroughly
wicked on stage this year.
“I love the banter that
happens with the audience,”
she says. “If they boo me, it’s
Boo the Baddies!Pantomime villains are the people we love to hate, and the chance
for a good hiss and boo is part of the great panto tradition. We’ve
been talking to Linda Nolan, playing the Wicked Queen in Snow
White at the Connaught Theatre, and Mark Wingett, playing
Abanazar in Aladdin at the Pavilion.
great to toss back a line like:
‘No more boos – I had a skinful
last night!’ And the camaraderie
with the rest of the cast makes
it a wonderful experience, too.”
Linda hopes her specially
designed gown will show a bit
of leg this year.
“It’s great to be sexy, but
only if it’s just a piece of fun,”
she explains. “The Queen may
have been beautiful once, but
thanks to Snow White, she’s
certainly not the fairest in the
land these days!”
Linda says she loves the
Connaught and is really looking
forward to her return this
Christmas.
“It’s a beautiful little
theatre, and the more people
we can encourage to support
it, the longer we’ll have
live entertainment here in
Worthing.”
The Second Fairest in the Land
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs runs from Friday December
3 to Friday December 31.
Aladdin runs from Thursday December 9 to Sunday January 2.
Tickets from Worthing Theatres box office on 01903 206206 or
online at www.worthingtheatres.co.uk.
“We always have a very
limited rehearsal time, with
just seven days to put the
show together,” he says.
“And while it’s vital that the
show goes on at a professional
level, it’s great to have a
knockabout style, with plenty
of ad libs to keep us on our
toes!”
And is he going to be fazed
by all that booing and hissing
from the audience?
“I thrive on it,” says Mark.
“But I’ve got a few ripostes up
my sleeve – so watch out!”
Abanazar’s top of The BillFrom gritty reality to
pantomime fantasy – that’s the
theatrical leap Mark Wingett
will be taking when he dons the
flowing robes of evil Abanazar
in Aladdin at the Pavilion
Theatre. Better known to us all
as DCI Carver in The Bill, a role
he played for many years, Mark
hopes his departure into panto
will be an arresting experience.
“I love panto as a tradition
because it’s such hard work and
so rewarding,” says Mark. “The
skill it takes is an absolute joy
-and the baddie role provides
the perfect opportunity to be
camp, funny and villainous, all
at the same time.”
Mark describes himself as a
South Coast boy. He grew up
near Chichester, had a small
fishing boat at Littlehampton
and remembers diving off the
coast at Worthing. He tells us he’s
delighted to be returning, and
can’t wait to begin rehearsals.
ESSENTIAL COMPETITIONNow’s your chance to win a family ticket for either of these fantastic shows. To enter our prize draw, just answer one of the following questions:
1. Who tells the Queen she is no longer the fairest in the land?
a) the magic mirror b) the Huntsman c) the seven dwarfs
2. What does Aladdin rub to awaken the Genie? a) magic wand b) magic lamp c) magic beans
Answer question 1 if you’d like to see Snow White at the Connaught or question 2 if you’d like to see Aladdin at the Pavilion. We’ve got five family tickets for each show. Write your answer on a postcard and send it to: Essentially Worthing Panto Competition, 7 Phrosso Road, Worthing, BN11 5SJ, to arrive by Tuesday November 30. We provide...subsidised veterinary treatment to pets of local
people receiving certain means-tested benefits or
bona-fide homeless, including many pensioners.
Although receiving fees, we rely heavily on donations
and legacies to cover our costs. Further subsidies
are available towards micro-chipping, neutering and
vaccinating puppies and kittens, and towards major
treatments or referrals beyond owners’ means. We
carry out some 4,000 consultations and 500 operations
a year, using extensive equipment and facilities and

Pet Vet CharityWorthing Animal Clinic is still helping owners with reduced means
It can happen to anyone. You fall
on hard times and struggle to
pay your bills – then the much-
loved family pet is injured or
becomes sick. It’s good to know
professional help is at hand.
The local charity set up eighty
years ago as The Worthing and
West Sussex Dispensary for Sick
Animals of the Poor is still going
strong. Having moved to their
current home in Newland Road
fifty years ago, and renamed
Worthing Animal Clinic in
1975, the charity’s purpose is to
provide veterinary care for the
pets of Worthing residents –
from BN11 to BN17 – unable to
pay normal fees.
Those receiving Housing
Benefit, Council Tax Benefit
or Pension Credit simply need
to provide written evidence
to qualify for the subsidy.
Homeless owners can produce a
letter from Worthing Churches
Homeless Project or, for Big Issue
sellers, a licence. A maximum of
three pets can be treated.
New Chairman Stephen
Christian says the work at the
Clinic is ‘often testing but never
dull’. He trusts the residents
of Worthing will continue to
support this excellent cause for
many years to come.
Worthing Animal Clinic

for information.
Although fireworks are great
fun for us, our pets often
hate them. If your cat or dog
cowers trembling under the
sofa every year, think twice
about having a Bonfire event
in your own garden at all.
Neighbours’ events are
another matter entirely-
and most vets advise you to
keep pets indoors when the
whizzes and bangs start.
Firework safety for nervous pets
You can also add a few drops
of rescue remedy to their
drinking water.
If your pet is very nervous
it may be worth planning
ahead, as firework noises can
begin well before the fifth
itself. Make an appointment
with your local vet who can
prescribe a mild sedative.
(And for more on general
firework safety, see page 22)
Well groomed and happyYou owe it to your dog to keep
him clean, healthy and happy.
So what’s the best way to go
about it?
It’s very important to get dogs
used to bathing and grooming
early – so start off with small,
fun sessions while your dog is a
puppy. Choose a routine that’s
fun for you both and schedule
bath time only when you have
plenty of time. If you’re stressed
or rushed, your dog is not likely
to enjoy the experience.
A good grooming session offers
an ideal opportunity to check
claws, teeth, ears and eyes, and
to make sure there are no lumps
or scabs. Long-haired breeds
like German Shepherds, Golden
Retrievers, Newfoundlands and
Bearded Collies need grooming
every day to avoid build-up
of knots and tangles. Breeds
like Irish Setters and Springer
Spaniels have silky hair, which
means the dead hair has to be
removed by hand. The most
time-consuming are wire-haired
breeds like the Schnauzer. Their
coats will need to be clipped at
least twice a year, with regular
grooming sessions in between.
When grooming, use a good
strong comb (a metal one is
excellent). Make sure you pay
attention to the hair behind
the ears, along the muzzle and
between the toes, as these
areas are often neglected. Your
dog should really enjoy the
invigorating feeling a good
grooming session gives him –
and it will also help stimulate
the natural oils of the skin.

Does your relationship with food rule your life?Difficult dentures can make life
uncomfortable in a big way.
If you’re a denture wearer,
don’t suffer in silence, says
Paul Cullen, Clinical Dental
Technician at The Denture
Studio
I have partial dentures
made of plastic, which break
annoyingly often and feel loose
in my mouth. Is there a better
alternative?
Certainly. Try metal ones,
which will clip into place easily
and hold fast. These are usually
made in a horseshoe shape,
which clears the palate and
makes eating a lot more fun.
Some people, however, may
find these are not suitable, so
please check first.
I have a full upper denture
with a metal palate. Although
I was originally advised that
this would be a good choice,
The Autumn Denture Adventure
Got a question we haven’t covered here? Want to make an
appointment? Give Paul a call at The Denture Studio on 01342 322171
I’m regretting it, because my
dentures have never fitted
properly. Why was I advised to
have this kind?
Every professional has his
own view. I’d say that although
this type of denture is stronger,
it’s just not flexible enough,
so you’ll never get a snug fit.
For strength and flexibility
I’d suggest inserting a metal
veneer into an acrylic denture.
It’s much more comfortable
than a full metal palate.

during the festive season and
raise money for charity by
throwing a FestiviTea Party.
FestiviTea Parties are a
chance for friends, family and
colleagues to get together
and share tea, cakes and
laughs – raising money for the
National Autistic Society at the
same time. They can be held
Remembrance for our feathered heroes
Remember, remember… stay safe in NovemberFirework parties on Bonfire
Night are brilliant fun, and
of course you want yours
to go with a bang. But
November 5 can be a night
to remember for all the
wrong reasons. If you’re
having a family get together
on Bonfire Night, our advice
is – don’t cut corners or
ignore safety warnings
when buying or setting
off fireworks. Follow the
Firework Code and have a
whizz-popping night!
• Whenyou’rebuying
fireworks, always read the
packet carefully and make
sure they are suitable for
the place where you are
going to set them off.
Check the box and only
buy fireworks marked BS
7114.
• Keepfireworksina
closed box, and follow
the instructions on each
firework.
We know plenty about the
heroes and heroines of World
War II. They flew Spitfires,
manned destroyers, worked
in munitions, intelligence
and a host of other fields of
conflict. Many who stayed at
home suffered the Blitz and
the privations of rationing.
But what of those other
unsung heroes of the period,
who winged their way over
occupied territory on missions
of mercy, carrying vital
messages and often bringing
home top secret information
from Allied agents?
The birds of the National
Pigeon Service provided
vital assistance to all Forces
and Services between 1939
and 1945, often flying in
extremely harsh conditions.
Secret armies of pigeons were
regularly dropped behind
enemy lines, and relayed
messages from members of
the Resistance to Wing House
in London.
And did you know there’s
a special memorial to these
warrior birds in Worthing?
You’ll find it in the centre of
Beach House Park, where it was
erected in 1949 and officially
unveiled in 1951. The memorial
fell into disrepair and was
fenced off for several years, but
has now been restored.
Take a look at the poignant
Biblical inscription on the
memorial plaque:
A bird in the air shall carry
the voice, and that which hath
wings shall tell the matter.
And below this:
In memory of Warrior Birds
who gave their lives on active
service...and for the use and
pleasure of living birds.
And there’s a chance for you
to join in a special Remembrance
Ceremony for these warrior
birds. It’s on Sunday November
21 at Beach House Park,
Worthing, starting promptly at
10.30am. For more information,
call Cynthia on 01444 239044.

Throw a FestiviTea Partyanywhere and at anytime, and
can make your FestiviTea Party
as big or small as you like. How
you raise the money is up to
you. Guests can buy tickets,
make a donation, or pay for the
cakes and biscuits you bake.
Christmas can often be a
stressful time for many families,
but it is especially difficult
for the half a million people
affected by autism. They can
often become confused and
frightened by sudden changes
of routine, unusual foods and
new social activities. The NAS
relies on donations in order to
provide support and services for
those affected by autism, and
every penny raised really does
make a difference.
All funds raised through
FestiviTea parties will be
used to support NAS
services including
Advocacy for Education
service, Befriending
scheme, Parent to
Parent support service
and help programme.

your own FestiviTea Party, visit:

Can I just make it clear, faithful
reader, that I LOVE Christmas –
everything about it!
That glorious magical time
of year to surround ourselves
with family and loved ones,
exchange gifts, eat (too much),
drink (responsibly) and be
merry. You can’t beat it.
My only problem is that it
feels to me as though we had
Christmas about ten weeks ago,
Stop the year – I want to get off!Paul Williams loves Christmas, BUT…
and suddenly it’s lying in wait
again, ready to bite us all on
the hind quarters.
Maybe it’s just something
that happens to you as you get
older, but to me this year has
just been one giant blur. We’re
nearing the end of a year that’s
seen a new Prime Minister (was
that really six months ago?),
Robbie Williams rejoined
Take That after fifteen years
(how many?) and a year that
saw the World Cup go by in the
blink of an eye (many would say
‘good thing too’ after England’s
performance.) On a more
personal note, this was also the
year I got married! Honestly, it
still feels like yesterday, but just
a week or so ago, it dawned
on me that it our vows are now
nearly half a year old. How did
that happen? At the rate things
are going, it’ll be our silver
anniversary before I know it.
It really does feel as though
someone has put the year on
fast forward. Is that just me?
As I write this, the Christmas
lights have already started to
pop up in Chapel Road, and
the panto posters are all across
town. It’s all marvellous – but
doesn’t it feel that every single
year, Christmas starts a little
earlier? Honestly, by 2014,
they’ll be carol singing in June!
A big factor is obviously
to do with the shops, who
understandably want to get
the most out of every single
opportunity to sell their goods.
But it’s not just a Christmas
thing. I’m sure you know
the drill – the Easter Eggs hit
the shelves just after Boxing
Day. Once the school summer
holidays start, the ‘back to
school’ offers appear (a horrid
reminder to all pupils that their
six weeks of freedom can be
over in a heartbeat if they’re
not careful). And once you hit
September – earlier in some
cases – the tinsel and wrapping
paper start to appear.
I’m really looking forward
to the festive season, but
first, I plan on trying to enjoy
November. I hope you do
too – because if your days feel
anything like mine, it’ll be Santa
time soon enough!

LEO (July 24 – Aug 23)If you feel as though your personal life has been in a gridlock situation recently, take heart. Delays you’ve been experiencing will soon be over, and the pace of your life is due to hot up very soon. Socially, things are looking up, too – and the latter half of the month is Leo heaven. Let the good times roll, but watch your health, too, as sniffles
could be lurking.
VIRGO (Aug 24 – Sept 23)Financial glitches are all set to annoy you this month, mostly relating to cash flow- but these are temporary and should iron themselves out by the end of the month. If you’re signing contracts, make time to read the small print, or take some expert advice if you’re unsure how to proceed. Family matters are very important right now, and you need
to listen to what someone close to you has to say.
LIBRA (Sept 24 – Oct 23)You may have been taking a long, hard look at all kinds of areas of your life recently – from personal goals at work to social image and even the clothes you wear. Many Librans like the flamboyant look, but if you’ve decided to go for a smarter wardrobe, you could elicit admiration from some unexpected quarters. Business partnerships and joint ventures
could be very interesting, so look sharp!
SCORPIO (Oct 24 – Nov 22)You may find yourself fantasising about the good life, and that’s no bad thing. Dreams and desires can come true if we wish for them hard enough, and although there’s no Fairy Godmother with a magic wand, the power of positive thought is immense. Financially, things are looking up, and you’re ready to leap into action with all kinds of exciting projects and investments.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov 23 – Dec 21)Now’s the time to take stock, review your year in an honest, sensible way and evaluate what you’ve achieved since January. You’ll be surprised by how good it sounds, but you may discover a number of issues that still need resolving – and you’ve got until the end of the year to get them sorted. Use your
excellent organisational skills and all is possible.
CAPRICORN (Dec 22 – Jan 20)Friends have been in a funny mood recently, perhaps trying to involve you in mini-dramas in their own lives. If you feel like an extra in a soap opera right now, don’t worry. Your listening skills are admirable and you’ll need to use them quite a lot over the next few weeks – but try to keep things in perspective. It’s their lives we’re talking about, not yours – so don’t allow anyone to raise your stress level.
AQUARIUS(Jan 21 – Feb 19)You’re making great strides in your career right now, and are also enjoying plenty of support from your family. Your drive and zeal to succeed make you a very attractive prospect in the world of work – and you’re facing all kinds of challenges with grit and determination. Well done, you! But don’t take your love life for granted, because a special someone
needs attention and TLC.
PISCES (Feb 20 – March 20)Money matters are high on your agenda this month, and this could create a few sticking points at work, as bosses may not see eye to eye with you. Don’t be tempted to take a high-handed approach – it’s far more beneficial to play a longer game. And because you’ve been working flat out recently you may be feeling a touch under the weather. Take time out to
rest and relax.
ARIES (March 21 – April 20)Foreign lands are calling to you this month, so it’s an ideal time to plan a lovely, exotic holiday. There’s plenty of excitement in other areas of your life, too – particularly if you’re a student. Educational opportunities abound, and now’s the time to make the most of what’s on offer. Breathe deeply and
expand your mind.
TAURUS (April 21 – May 21)You’re so popular at the moment that it sometimes feels as though everyone wants a piece of you. And, of course, true to form, you’re going out of your way to help others and putting everyone else’s interests before your own. Your love life is going through a passionate and intense phase, too. Steady on! This could get seriously exhausting, unless you make time
to relax.
GEMINI (May 22 – June 21)Although work is always an important factor, you love exploring the fun side of life, and this month you’ll have plenty of opportunity to party. Your health is looking good – perhaps because you’ve taken matters in hand recently and have improved your diet and exercise regime. If this is the case, it’s certainly paying off. Romance is an uneven playing
field, however – so take care.
CANCER (June 22 – July 23)Personal independence is an admirable thing, but it’s not what gets you where you want to be this month. Your road to success lies in a totally different direction, and you’ll need to use personal charisma in tandem with your ability to get others to co-operate with you. This is the situation you’re stuck with for a while, but hang on in there – and wait for a new phase of independence on the horizon.
A fun, friendly look at what’s in the stars for you in November

Bob and Ken warmly welcome
you for your Christmas
celebrations
And Dr Sarah has the last word…
Dr Sarah defends the Ambulance Service
Who do you call if you wake
in the night with chest pain or
can’t breathe? Who comes to
your aid if you have an accident
and are badly injured? Who
can you rely upon to rescue you
from almost any situation and
make you safe? Who can often
treat and reassure you at home?
Who comes quickly and free of
charge? Who else will fish you
out of the gutter when you’ve
When the blue lights flashlost your shoes, phone, money
and even your friends have
deserted you?
That’s right, the Ambulance
Service.
I hope you will forgive my
shamelessly hijacking this
month’s column to defend and
praise my colleagues in green
who have been subject to
some adverse coverage in the
press recently. It would clearly
be inappropriate to comment
on the details of the case in
question but I will say this.
I work very closely with all the
local crews and know many of
them personally. I therefore do
feel more qualified than anyone
to comment on the quality of
the individuals and the service
they provide to the public.
The dedicated men and
women of the Ambulance
Service work hard to serve us
all when we most need help.
They do this without judgement
and without first checking your
credit rating.
I am lucky to work in a
hospital environment where
the lighting is good, there
is plenty of space and I have
facilities and expert advice at
my fingertips. Ambulance crews
work anywhere – outside, in the
dark, in confined spaces and in
homes, all with limited back-up
and equipment. They are highly
trained professionals. Thanks to
their expertise, only a fraction
of 999 calls made to the Service
ever come to hospital at all.
When they do, patients have
been assessed and treatment is
already underway.
It’s worth mentioning that
while they can often diagnose,
treat and transport to hospital,
the crews are not responsible
(and neither am I) for the
pathology that got the patient
into that position in the first
place. Our responsibility to the
public as frontline care givers is
to assess and treat based on the
information we have available
to us, and the examination
findings at the time. What we
see may be an inaccurate snap
shot of the true picture. Many
people are unfamiliar with
their own medical problems
or medication and so cannot
give helpful information which
might influence vital decisions.
Enough said!
Dr Sarah trained in Medicine
at King’s College, London, and
now works in the Emergency
Department at Worthing
Hospital.
