Ts vanguard, Worthing sea cadet and royal marine cadets are located at 9a broadwater road, Worthing.
based in a large customised building including parking, main hall, class rooms, engineering workshops and boat shed the unit is well equipped and supported by the royal navy with a close tie with hms shoreham.
young adults aged 12 to 18 for the sea cadets, 13 to 18 for royal marine cadets parade twice a week on Wednesdays and fridays throughout the year including holiday times from 1900 to 2100. Parade nights area an opportunity for everyone to learn practical life skills, drill and discipline and core values following the tradition of the royal navy.
youngsters are also welcome on Wednesdays aged between 10 and 12 years old, learning the basics and having fun, making ready to join the older cadets.
Evenings are full of learning and some serious fun in a safe and controlled environment. our capable volunteers come from all walks of life including ex-servicemen and women through to captains of industry. most volunteers are uniformed and all are crb checked.
alongside the corps syllabus which ranges from practical seamanship, navigation, camp craft and meteorology through to engineering, leadership and adventure training all our cadets are given the opportunity to gain highly desirable qualifications including RYA (Royal Yacht Association) Certificates in Sailing and Power boating, duke of Edinburgh award scheme and bTEc Diplomas the equivalent of five GCSEs.
Outside of parade nights the Sea Cadets offers many and varied ways of exploring and enjoying adventures such as weeklong cruises on Tall ships reliving the romance of life at sea under sail yet taking full responsibility for their boat and themselves, pot holing, caving and rock climbing, canoeing, dinghy sailing and power boating to name just a few!

You’re playing the lead in Rapunzel, how have you found taking on such a beloved role?i’ve loved it, it’s been lots of fun to play a feisty princess role for once, she’s really got something about her. We’ve taken parts of the original rapunzel and quite a lot of inspiration from the Disney film Tangled, which all the children who’ve been coming to see us know and really enjoy, so she’s got that level of feistiness too which has been great.
You’ve played a number of fairytale princess, from Snow White to Cinderella, have you had a favourite or is there one you’d especially like to play?I love them all because they’re all so different. With Snow White you’ve got the seven dwarves who are mischievous and fun to play against while cinderella’s got the beautiful ball-gown but rapunzel’s got the hair! it’s been quite a challenge to work with because it’s just so long and it’s been funny trying to move around with it. i had a whole day of training before we started rehearsals but the rest of the cast sometimes stand on it so i’ll be trying to get on from the wings or move on stage and won’t be able to get anywhere!
You’re known for having a wonderful ability to connect with audiences, are there any top tips you can share?it can depend on the audiences really, some are really involved and you’ll be able to use that so they get really involved with the songs and have the typical pantomime interaction. also as the princess you get to really connect with the little girls, some of them will come to the theatres dressed up as rapunzel which is really lovely and you can get them singing along and dancing at the front which makes the performance really special.
You recently finished the Broadway Revival of 42nd Street and you get to sing in Rapunzel too. Will audiences know the songs and are there any you can advise them to look out for?They’re all very well known and there are lots of songs. We’ve got gangnam style in there which all the children know and they join in and love it but we’ve also got the duet from Tangled and some classic disney songs which everyone knows and they can sing along.
Jon Moses played Prince Rupert for us here in Worthing during panto, has he passed on any thoughts about the town or is there anything you’re looking forward to about visiting the coast?he’s really looking forward to coming back actually and he’s said that everyone’s really friendly and that the audiences were great and really supportive so i’m looking forward to that and just hoping some of the same audiences come to see us! We’re having such fun, it’s more than a stage-show to us, so it’ll be great to share that with everyone in Worthing.

is Summer really on its way? hopefully we can start thinking of salads, eating al fresco, light summer evenings accompanied by some light summer wines.
in recent years the sales of rose wines have reached unprecedented levels. almost one out of every ten bottles of wine sold in this country is rose and even the French are following suit ! if we have a ‘proper’ english summer then sales are expected to be one out of every nine bottles sold - whatever next !
you may remember in the February issue i touched on the subject of roses with even the old favourites like Mateus rose and rose d’anjou having a revival,however there are so many to choose from today.perhaps we have to thank gallo with its Zinfandel blush for kick starting these sales, but there is so much more to rose than this wine.at a cursory glance the addage of local wine matching well with local food is often true with rose and especially european rose’s.
France, italy, Spain,and germany produce such a renowned variety of smoked meats and hams such as bayonne,Serrano,palma and the like and these go so well with the dry and fruity rose’s of their respective countries.it is the dryness that cuts through the salty tang of many of these meats - its not only the colours that match !!
italy abounds with different rose’s from all around the country and with over 2000 different grape varieties grown its not hard to find one.traditionally in Spain the costa’s have always offered a local dry rose but increasingly rioja and its neighbour navarra are using the once main red grape of the region garnacha ( grenache ) for this purpose.there are some excellent and often very reasonable ones around and moreover being made to sate the extra demand.
it is Southern France though where i have a soft spot for rose’s.whether made from grenache,cinsault,Syrah or cabernet,or one of the many lesser known red grapes of the area,there is a bountiful supply.provence rose,often in its sexy shaped bottle is a favourite but sadly creeping up the price scale. traditional dry and full bodied rose’s like tavel from the rhone,with its wonderful onion skinned colour are great.but for value the rose’s from further west in Southern France are worth looking for. pop in to grapes and taste some of our rose’s. two of our best sellers are vin de pays du gard and the cotes de thongue, both well under £10 a bottle.

The Adur & Worthng Food and Drink festival kicks off in Worthing over the weekend from the 5th to 7th July. There will be a huge marquee on Worthing’s steyne gardens for the whole weekend which will be home to a veritable feast of food & drink delights along with entertainment plus fun for the kids.
The following weekend of 13th & 14th will be focussed around shoreham-by-sea with the chilli festival and the award winning shoreham farmers’ market taking place in the town centre.

Flourishing Start-ups – planning is the key i have been doing a lot of work recently with start-ups – enabling budding entrepre-neurs to successfully set-up and run a new business. i have been mentoring and running workshops to help individuals to draw up busi-ness plans in order to prove the viability of their business. business planning is a vital element of getting a business on its feet and then sustaining itself. We can all have a great business idea, but is it viable? business planning helps you do this by enabling you to ask key questions about your potential or existing busi-
ness. for example, is there a demand for the product or service and what is the com-petition and most importantly can you make money out of the business?
one scheme i am involved with is the new Enterprise allowance which supports indi-viduals to come off benefits and run their own businesses. Worthing Theatres are good for businessyou may know that i was one of the founding Trustees of Worthing Theatres Trust, set up to bid to run the theatres when they were threatened with closure in 2011. in fact, we featured in this very magazine. since then, a new manager has been appointed, amanda o’reilly, and their programme of events is going from strength to strength, with a diverse range of events. i have booked a couple of the new comedy shows already. They are working hard to raise their profile which means more punters will come to the town which can only be good for local businesses.

as children, we used to sing lots of songs, from nursery rhymes to songs that were on the radio, usually with no inhibition. but how often do we sing as an adult, or even hum or whistle?
ThrEE good rEasons To singsinging can be an amazing method of stress relief most anyone can do. Many people want to play a musical instrument but cannot afford one - why ignore the free one you were born with? Whilst not classed as a sport, singing can improve breathing, posture, stamina and concentration. The marine singers, a choir of 25 laid back people are recruiting new members. We need all voice parts, particularly men (tell us a choir that doesn’t!). We meet at the heene centre in heene road, Worthing from 7:pm till 9:00 pm on Wednesdays during school term time and sing a wide variety of items – songs from the shows, gospel, pop, traditional, jazz and seasonal music at christmas time. We do not audition potential singers but do expect a high level of commitment demonstrated by regular attendance and active participation. The fees for the choir are £48 per term which works out at about £2.00 per hour. You would be hard pressed to find singing tuition for less.

you may or may not know, but may 2013 sees splash fm’s 10th birthday! yep – on the 5th of May 2003, the station first went on air – and we’re still doing the business a decade on!
a quick salute to everyone who has been involved with splash over the last ten years. There are just too many people to mention, but each and every person involved has made a massive contribution to what is a great radio station, a great part of the community, and an organisation that i’m very proud to be part of!
if you’re reading this before bank holiday monday may 6, we’re having a little bit of an open house on that day! from 11am-1pm, our studios at the guildbourne centre will be open for you to take a tour behind the scenes. also, if you’ve ever fancied trying your hand at being a presenter or newsreader, you may even get the chance to try it out!There have been many highlights over the last ten years, but one of my favourites
has to be The splash fm garden Party! i’ve loved seeing this event grow in recent years. Splash’s first concert in Steyne gardens was actually held quite a way before the station was on air, and was a comparatively small affair with bands performing from the side of a truck. over the years, however, the event has grown into the garden Party we know today – and i love it every year!
This year’s event takes place on saturday 20 July, and the line up this year is absolutely awesome.

it is ironic, that when there is all this information around, that we still jump to the wrong conclusions.

dr sarah has the last wordi saw a poor lady last week, who had come to a&E, entire family
in tow, convinced she had some frightful disease. she was so anxious she could barely speak. she was visibly quite well and reasonably fit, but convinced her days were numbered. It took a little coaxing to get to the bottom of her problem, as it was certainly not a traditional ‘a’ or ‘E’.
she explained she was worried about something, and having quicker access to her laptop than to her gP, had opted to consult dr google. i’m not ashamed to admit that dr google and i often confer. as a simple soul- i’m good at stopping people dying- i’m less good at all the small print stuff we learned at Med School. That’s why I’m an ED Dr in the first place. So Google ‘refreshes’ my memory on occasion about the minutiae stored in dusty drawers at the back of my mind. i’m happy to say that my poor lady was reassured that she would make it through the night and sent off in relieved floods of tears to discuss her worries in more detail with her gP in daylight hours.
The recent measles outbreak in Wales is a totally inevitable consequence of misinformation and misinterpretation of information. The unfounded and now discredited research claiming a link between the mmr vaccination and autism/inflammatory bowel disease resulted in many parents choosing not to immunise their children at all. i remember this time quite clearly, as i too faced the same dilemma, having a baby son of mmr age. i got straight on my computer and painstakingly trawled through all the available evidence. and found what has since emerged; that there wasn’t any convincing association between the mmr and either autism
