THIS IS MY BODY: The human body can be a fragile thing. I recently came across the TV series Great Ormond Street, which followed the stories of a number of very sick children and the doctors who treat them in London’s children’s hospital. It was harrowing to watch the things these children go through. Some of them have spent the majority of their young lives in hospital and have never known a life without pain and suffering.

Many of us also know people who are sick or suffering and it can be hard to make sense of it all. In April this year, Kerry teenager Donal Walsh spoke out about his battle with terminal cancer, and made a powerful plea to those considering suicide to think differently about their lives. He believed that his life, while short, could be a sign of hope for others.

‘Please, as a 16-year-old who has no say in his death sentence, who has no choice in the pain he is about to cause and who would take any chance at even a few more months on this planet: appreciate what you have, know that there are always other options,’ was his plea.

On this feast of Corpus Christi, we recall how Jesus took bread and gave it to his disciples, saying ‘This is my body’. He gave his own body over to suffering and death, for us. Our own bodies may be weak, but Jesus is with us in our frailty, united with us in our suffering. Let us bring our brokenness into the presence of Christ today

Reconciliation is a word which speaks of friendship after a quarrel. When applied to a new friendship between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and white Australians, it should also admit of terrible wrongs in the past. White Australians built the fences which excluded those who for thousands of years had roamed freely on this land.

I attended a Liturgy of Reconciliation at Mt Carmel School on Monday morning and was delighted that our young people were praying for reconciliation, but more importantly, they know the story. They celebrated this ancient culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, in dance, on Wednesday.

Advertisements for the Pastoral Associate (Youth) for our communities will begin to appear this next week. Besides the people already employed by CatholicCare for the Yass Office, they have also appointed Susie Webster as the parish contact. Susie will be a great gift to the future mission of our communities.

At the Parish Finance Committee (Yass) held last Tuesday, we have decided to proceed with the renovations of the old chapel, at the same time encouraging donations for this work. There was also acceptance for the work on a stained glass window, to be designed by Kim Nelson.

Our church at Wee Jasper will be used on the first Sunday of each month for a service to be led by Rev. Steve Neuhaus, an Anglican minister. It will be open to all residents.

It is the beginning of a normal letter between two distant friends, linked by strong affection. A letter that becomes extraordinary, however, when one learns the name of the sender: Jorge Mario Bergoglio. The Argentine daily “El Clarin” published the message of response today, which Pope Francis sent last May 15 to a priest friend, parish priest in the province of La Rioja, Father Enrique Rodriguez, whom the Holy Father affectionately calls “Quique.”

Recounting his life at Rome, the Pontiff writes: “I didn’t want to live in the Apostolic Palace. I go there only to work and for audiences. I live in Saint Martha’s House, which is a boarding house, where we were guests during the Conclave. It houses bishops, priests and laymen. I am visible to people and I lead a normal life. A public Mass in the morning, I eat at table with everyone, etc.”

“All this does me much good and avoids my being isolated,” adds the Pope. “

“Quique, affectionate greetings to your parishioners. I ask you please to pray for me and have others pray for me. Greetings to Carlos and Miguel. May Jesus bless you and the Holy Virgin look after you,” he concludes.

Last Saturday night, nine young people from our youth group gathered in the old chapel to put in a couple of hours work towards the renovation there. We helped in preparing the parquetry for sale; removing nails and staples from the wood and then bundling it up in square metre lots. The night proved enjoyable, especially with the pizza provided by Fr Mick and the talk he gave to us about the history of the chapel and why what we were doing was important. A special thank you to the parents who came and lent their time and skills: Lara Kirk, David Richards, Craig Morton, Paul Trezise and Sarah Johnston. Overall we managed to prepare more than half of the remaining parquetry, congratulations and thanks go out to all involved.

The next youth group meeting will be on

Saturday 22nd June after Mass.

Jesus said to his apostles: Do this in memory of me.

We all love to be remembered.

This was true even of Jesus.

But if we want to be remembered,

we have a duty also to remember.

Memory is a powerful thing.

Wrongly used it brings death;

rightly used it brings life,

and is a form of immortality.

It keeps the past alive.

Those we remember never die;

they continue to walk and talk with us.

Lord, when we celebrate the Eucharist

we are remembering you.

May that remembering bring us life here and hereafter.
