Listen to the Police scanners for any announcement of shootings, stabbings, auto accidents, or fire emergences.

Answered and made calls to get information on events and breaking news.

ASSIGNMENT DESK

Shadowed Kelly Lyon, WBRZ 5p.m. News Producer, in preparation for the stories for the day and joined her at the production room at 5pm.

PRODUCTION ROOM

Breaking news of an escaped prisoner at the Livingston detention center.

Shadowed a reporter and a photojournalist as they covered the live shot “Fans Watching” of the LSU Baseball game that was hosted at The Varsity.

I practiced my Voice over -VO and Sound on Tape –SOT using a script I was given.

WEEK 4

Shadowed Dana Hackett, as she covered a package story of St. Joseph’s Academy. The school was given a permit to build more parking lots across from the residential area, which the residents are opposed to (See video).

I learned how a live shot is transferred from the camera buses on locations to the news control room and then aired on TV.

I shadowed reporter, Kristy Davis, as she covered a story about the sewage problem some residents were facing in Gonzales, Ascension Parish (See video package).

I also did a stand up at the metro council office (See Video package).

The most important things about the media is to report the fact and to help get the peoples’ voices and message heard.

Clear correction communication is very important in the media because any mistake can harm the network and the community.

Making sure you write the fact and not censured is very important– try to report want you heard correctly and not what you think is write.

Staying on top of information and events around the state. Before going to cover a story, try to research more on the

story, so you can have an idea of what kind of questions to ask. Why , When, Where, Who, and How– Questions.

Always try to interact with the interviewee, in order to make them comfortable , it helps to keep them talking and get the information you need.

When covering a story, specifically stories that are emotional and the interviewee is crying, you have to make sure or try not to show too much emotions of yourself and also make sure you don’t tell the person sorry because your duty to make to the share his/her story and emotions are very good for any news story. Example: when I shadowed Kristy Davis to cover a live story of an escaped prisoner

at Denham spring detention centre , where his mother and wife was crying.

When interviewing, it is important to always stand by the side of the cameraman, so that you will the be in shot of the video except which doing a live shot, stand up or package that involve you showing something.

I feel in order to be able to succeed in a media network, you always have to come into the office with a positive attitude. Leaving all the problems at behind you.

As a reporter try to be diverse in the kinds of stories you cover. You always want to challenge you self.

There is no perfect way in write a news story, although there are some rules that you have to follow but everyone writes differently.

when logging and writing the story, make sure to use the best video for the story.

In the story: use simple catchy word to introduce the story, some thing that will keep the

viewers interested. What is the issue and controversy of the story. Then, the background details of the story behind it. Finally, close it off with a tag( end decision of the story).

Try not to take things personally when the producer(s) edits your scripts or makes you rewrite your scripts several times, he/she is just trying to bring out the best from you.

Networking between the co-worker and other organizations in the community is very important because they can help bring stories to you.

Make sure to read the newspaper ,watch TV and listen to radio for any stories coming up that you might be interested in. Also, make sure to always come up with your story for the day before if getting to the station or waiting for the producer to give you a story to cover.
